About This Walk

Hello! My name is John Dukes and I would love to invite you to come join us for an Autumn photowalk through historic Georgetown in Washington, DC! We’ll explore the charm of Georgetown University, go down the legendary Exorcist stairs, and capture the beauty of its stunning architecture during one of the most picturesque times of year—October.

This will be my fourth time leading a photowalk in the Nation’s Capital.  The many members who have joined us on past photowalks in DC will testify that our walks are fun and memorable. This year will be no exception!

Grab a pumpkin spice latte, bring your camera or smartphone, and let’s enjoy an amazing walk filled with history, photography, autumn vibes and lots and lots of fun!

Terrain is all flat and easy. The stairs will be downhill.

Our Group PhotoOctober 3rd, 2025

One last thing, and then I promise I’ll stop with all the updates!

In past walks, we’ve always taken our group photo at the very beginning. This time, I’d like to switch things up a bit. Let’s plan to take our group photo once we reach the Georgetown University portion of our walk — about the halfway point. It’s a gorgeous spot, and the campus architecture will make for a stunning backdrop.

There’s plenty to photograph there, so we can explore and capture some shots first, then gather for our group photo afterward. I’ll bring my tripod, just like in previous years, so we can get a great shot of everyone together.

Thanks, everyone!
—John

Can’t Wait for Our Georgetown Photowalk Tomorrow!October 3rd, 2025

Hello everyone!

I couldn’t be more excited about our walk tomorrow! If you’ve joined any of my previous walks through the Nation’s Capital, you already know how much fun we have, the great stories that come out of it, and, of course, the incredible photos everyone takes home. This one will be no exception!

A little background before we meet tomorrow. Georgetown is one of the most historic and charming areas in the entire country. It’s truly a gem of Washington, DC, and we’ll be exploring it during one of the most beautiful times of the year. Every house and cobblestone street we’ll pass seems to have a story to tell. Georgetown has been home to many famous figures, including Hollywood stars like Elizabeth Taylor. I like to call it the Beverly Hills of the East Coast—though honestly, I think it’s even better.

There’s so much to photograph here: gorgeous architecture, the starting point of the C&O Canal (which stretches 185 miles to Cumberland, MD), picturesque neighborhoods, cobblestone streets, movie landmarks, and one of the most beautiful college campuses in the country. I know everyone will come away with amazing images, and I can’t wait to see them all!

Here’s the route we’ll be taking:
The meeting point (at 3:00 PM) and our final stop are just one block apart, making parking and transportation easy. Dinner afterward will be at Flavio Restaurant, where we’ll relax, share stories, and enjoy some great food together.

Our route:

Meet on Thomas Jefferson St NW, right by the overpass above the C&O Canal.

Walk west along the C&O Canal Towpath.

Turn right onto 31st St NW (you’ll see Flavio Restaurant on the right—our dinner spot!).

Turn left onto M St NW.

Turn right onto Wisconsin Ave NW.

Turn left onto N St NW.

Turn right onto 37th St NW, entering Georgetown University on the left.

After photographing around the campus, head back to 37th & O St NW.

Walk east along O St NW, then right onto 36th St NW.

At 36th & Prospect St NW, you’ll find two movie landmarks:

Toombs Restaurant – filmed as St. Elmo’s Bar in St. Elmo’s Fire (1985).

The Exorcist House, featured on the iconic poster for The Exorcist (1973).

Beside the house are the famous Exorcist Stairs—don’t worry, they’re perfectly safe (and make for awesome photos!).

Walk down the stairs, then at the bottom turn left onto M St NW.

Turn right onto Wisconsin Ave NW and continue to Georgetown Waterfront Park for beautiful views and photo ops, including the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Head back toward Wisconsin, turn right onto K St NW, walk east under the Clara Barton Parkway overpass.

Turn left on 31st St NW to arrive at Flavio Restaurant—our final stop for dinner!

We have a great turnout for tomorrow’s walk, so let’s do our best to stay together. If anyone gets lost or needs help, please call or text me at 443-547-5850.

Make sure to charge your batteries, bring your cameras or iPhones, and wear comfortable clothes (the restaurant is casual, too). Get ready for a fun, photo-filled day—it’s going to be an awesome experience!

See you all tomorrow!

Dinner ConfirmationOctober 3rd, 2025

Hi everyone.

It was just brought to my attention that some of you may not be able to reply to this email. If you could just text me on 443 547-5850 and let me know if you plan on coming to the dinner, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!

Quick Headcount for Dinner After Tomorrow’s PhotowalkOctober 3rd, 2025

Hello everyone,

I hope you’re getting excited for our photowalk on Saturday! The forecast is looking great, and it’s sure to be a wonderful time.

Later this evening, I’ll be sending out another update with details on the walk and the route we’ll be taking. In the meantime, I need to confirm our dinner headcount. I’ve already made a reservation, but since more people have signed up (and I know not everyone will stay for dinner), I’d like to give the restaurant the most accurate number possible.

If you could reply today and let me know how many will be joining us for dinner, I’d really appreciate it. Either way is perfectly fine—I just want to make sure the restaurant is prepared.

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow at 3:00 PM!

Warmly,
John Dukes

Walk UpdateSeptember 29th, 2025

Can you believe we’re now less than a week away from the photowalk? I hope you’re just as excited as I am. It’s going to be such a fun evening!

A few of you have reached out with questions about parking and metro service to Georgetown. Unfortunately, the Metro doesn’t run very close to the area, but there are good alternatives:

Bus Service: The G2 bus stops right at Georgetown University’s main gate (37th & O St NW). Other Metrobus lines also serve the neighborhood, including the A58, C91, D80, D82, D94, and D96, with additional stops along P Street and Wisconsin Avenue.

Parking: Georgetown has several garages. If you’re driving in, I recommend downloading the SpotHero app—it shows available garages, pricing, and even lets you reserve and prepay to guarantee a spot. Typical garage rates run about $20, but with SpotHero you may snag a better deal.

Rideshare/Taxi: Uber, Lyft, and traditional cabs are also widely available throughout DC.

We’ll be meeting on the overpass at Thomas Jefferson St NW to begin our walk. Afterward, dinner is reserved under my name at Flavio Restaurant (1073 31st St NW), which is just a short walk from our starting point. Tracy and I plan to park at the garage across from Flavio on 31st Street, so if you’re joining us for dinner, you might find it convenient to park there too.

Unlike our past walks on the National Mall, this one will wind through the narrower streets of Georgetown. We currently have about 20 people signed up, so let’s do our best to stay together. That said, if anyone gets separated, Tracy and I will provide a map of the route. Georgetown is full of charm, historic architecture, cobblestone streets, and endless photo opportunities. You’re going to love it!

To our returning friends, thank you for joining us again. To our first-timers, welcome to the family! These walks are always about making new friends, sharing good company, and doing what we all love – capturing great photos.

One last tip: pack light. One camera body with a telephoto lens is plenty, or just bring your iPhone/Samsung if you’d like to keep things super easy.

Stay tuned for more updates, and I can’t wait to see you all on Saturday!

Restaurant Reservation at 6:00pm – Flavio RestaurantSeptember 20th, 2025

Hi everyone!
I just wanted to let you all know that I made a dinner reservation for us at an awesome Italian restaurant in Georgetown. I made it for 12 people for now at 6:00pm, but we can always adjust the number as it gets closer.

The restaurant is called Flavio and it is located in the heart of Georgetown, at 1073 31st Street Northwest
Washington, DC. It is just south of M St NW, which is the main road that goes through Georgetown. Tracy and I have dined in this location many times and it is really great!

Please consider joining us for some great food, some fun sharing stories and laughs with friends!

More updates to come soon! And a big thank you to our newest members who have signed up for our walk! I am so excited about this one and it is going to be so much fun!

Updates for Our Upcoming Photo Walk!September 14th, 2025

Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a wonderful weekend!

I wanted to take a moment to share what you can expect in the days and weeks ahead as we prepare for our upcoming walk. It’s going to be an amazing and fun experience, and I’m confident you’ll discover plenty of unique and inspiring things to photograph along the way. I’ll also be sending out tips on parking, transportation, and how to make the most of the day.

As some of you know from past walks, Tracy and I like to do a “pre-walk” before the big day. This allows us to map out the route and scout interesting photo opportunities in advance. We’ll be doing this soon and will report back with the finalized path. Expect to explore historic streets, a scenic waterfront, and yes—the famous Exorcist stairs!

I’m also in the process of arranging a reservation at one of Georgetown’s great local restaurants. There’s a fantastic Italian spot I have in mind. Once the details are set, I’ll share them with you. Gathering together after the walk is always a highlight—great food, great company, and a chance to swap stories from the day.

Right now, we have about a dozen participants signed up, and I expect that number to grow as we get closer to the date.

Thank you again for joining us! This promises to be a walk to remember, full of fun, photos, and new friendships.

Feel free to save my number—443-547-5850—and don’t hesitate to call or text if you need anything.

More updates coming soon!

Best,
John Dukes
