Where We Will Meet

In front of the LBJ Presidential Library

Where The Walk Will End

Snarf's Sandwiches, 2901 Medical Arts

About This Walk

Let’s get together for a wander through UT, starting at the LBJ Presidential Library and hitting some of the highlights over the course of a couple of miles – Texas Memorial Stadium, the Moody Center, the Blanton Museum of Art, Littlefield Fountain, and the UT Tower. We’ll end at Snarf’s Sandwiches on the corner of Dean Keaton and Medical Arts for a show-and-tell and general photo geekery. See the approximate route on Google Maps at https://maps.app.goo.gl/FF3vkLxuyHstRpPD7.

Parking for the LBJ Library is in Lot #38 which you enter from Red River. This is free “during business hours” and the library opens at 9am. I’m not sure if this means the lot is unavailable earlier or whether you need to pay. The nearest public garage on the UT property is on San Jacinto, about 5 minutes walk from the library. I’ll likely try Lot #38 first then move over to San Jacinto if it’s closed. UT parking is $3 per hour so you may also consider some free street parking in the area north of Dean Keaton around Red River and the hospital.

Congratulations, Tom!October 24th, 2024

The photowalk contest is now closed and we had 6 images submitted. As leader, I get the honor of picking the best photo (in my opinion, of course) which is then sent to the higher-ups who will be judging the worldwide competition. I’m delighted to report that Tom Hausler’s image “Chairs in a Row” was my choice for its pleasing geometric composition and nice handling of a tricky lighting situation. Hopefully the site will post the image on the walk page some time soon.

Contest Is Now Open!October 7th, 2024

This year’s photo contest is now open for submissions. If you are interested in participating (and it’s definitely not mandatory!), visit the walk page for instructions – https://worldwidephotowalk.com/walk/university-of-texas-at-austin/. The deadline is October 12th, this coming Saturday, and you can enter up to 5 images.

Once the deadline has passed, I get to judge the best image from the walk and this goes forward to the worldwide competition. Pictures at this level are judged by Scott Kelby and overall winners will be announced some time later.

Thanks!October 5th, 2024

Many thanks to everyone who showed up this morning for our walk! I had a blast and it was great to meet so many new people and catch up with a bunch of old friends. I know several people wanted to get hold of the group shots we took so I’ve uploaded all my pictures to SmugMug at https://davewilson.smugmug.com/Events/World-Wide-Photo-Walk-2024 and set them to allow free download. Please feel free to grab anything you want. I would love to see what people captured so please drop a note in the discussion page for this walk with a URL if you want to share anything.

There’s generally a competition associated with the event but I’ve not read the details about this yet. Once I hear how it’s going to work, I’ll post another update.

Thanks again for a great morning!

Best regards,

Dave

One Day To Go!October 4th, 2024

Tomorrow’s the big day and we have a good sized group of a dozen or so photographers registered. A few things to remember:

1. Charge your batteries and clear out your memory cards (yes, I know this is obvious but someone arrives with a dead battery on pretty much every photo walk!)
2. Bring water and sunscreen. The forecast for tomorrow is clear skies and temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s so it should be gorgeous.
3. Prepare to have fun and meet new people. I only recognize 4 or 5 names on the registration list so I’m looking forward to some new faces.
4. Ask questions! There will likely be a huge variety of skills represented in the group so, if you want to learn something, ask around and you are likely to be able to find help.

As a drone flyer, I should also mention that our entire route is within UT property so, unfortunately, if you had planned on bringing a drone, it will have to stay in your bag until you leave the area. UT prohibits drone operations from its property (but, after the walk, you can stand outside of UT and fly in if you’re desperate 😉 )

I look forward to seeing everyone outside the main LBJ Library entrance at 8am tomorrow morning.

Regards,

Dave

  1. Hi Everyone! I just wanted to let you know that I updated the walk to add our endpoint at Snarf’s Sandwiches on Medical Arts. I’ve not eaten there but I walk past it often and it looks good. Online reviews are also good and it’s close to our starting point so I reckon it’s a decent choice.

  2. I’m really sorry, but I’m not going to be able to make this one.. I looked up and down and couldn’t find the “leave” button on the walk page. I’ll keep an eye peel for the next one. I hope everyone has a wonderful time today.

  3. Hobie, sorry you couldn’t join us yesterday! Hopefully we’ll have another one next year and you can come along to it.

Joyce, you found us and it was great to meet you!
