About This Walk
Deer Valley Airport is a regional airport on Phoenix north side. It is on the north side of Deer Valley Road. Enter the parking lot from the traffic light on 7th Avenue.
Deer Valley Airport take offs and landings will provide the fun for us. Most of the aircraft you’ll have a chance to capture will be small single engine planes, privately owned or part of the flight school. Sometimes we’ll see a jet land or take off.
We will be living in shutter priority. For the many small aircraft, you’ll want to select a slower shutter speed to show movement of the prop. Too fast and the plane will look like it is hanging by a string off the ceiling. As for jets, you’ll want a faster speed. Try 1/1600 to start.
You’ll need a telephoto lens. I use the Canon RF 100-400mm with the 1/4x extender. Tamron makes a very nice 150-600mm lens great for airshows. If you think your lens is too heavy, attach it to a monopod.
I just checked the weather for Deer Valley Airport for Saturday 4 October 2024. Between 10am and 11am it should be in the low 90s, so do bring water. The observation deck does have a covering, so we won’t be in direct sun. Most of the aircraft will be Piper Cub type planes. Now and then we’ll see a jet. And often helicopters will come in on medical missions. I will be shooting with a Canon EOS R6 Mark II and a Canon RF 100-400mm lens with a 1.4 extender.
