About This Walk

Honor and photograph Mifflinburg’s rich German heritage at the 21st annual Mifflinburg Oktoberfest(Make sure to visit the festival’s website!). At this FREE fall festival, visitors can watch and photograph the keg toss and mug lift competitions before trying out new dance moves to live German band music. A wide variety of German ethnic food and imported German beers are available. Many people arrive in traditional German dress proud of their German Heritage.

Mifflinburg was settled by German immigrants in the late 1700s. Coach maker George Swentzel built the first carriage in town in 1845. Over the next 84 years, more than 80 coach-making shops opened in Mifflinburg, producing roughly 5,000 vehicles annually. By the 1880s, the town earned the moniker “Buggy Town” due to its massive per capita production of buggies and sleighs. Photographers from out of town can explore this history at the Mifflinburg Buggy Museum, located at 598 Green Street. The museum preserves the original home, factory, carriage house, and showroom of buggy maker William A. Heiss, left virtually intact. Open Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m.
Because of the rich farmlands surrounding this quaint historic village of three thousand residents, many Amish and Mennonite families live in the area today.
This Photowalk is led by Dan Hyde, founder and past Chair of the Lewisburg Photography Club. At noon Saturday October 3rd, we will meet at the eastern side of the large gazebo pictured in the background of Dan’s image and then photographers will be free to explore the festival on their own.  We will meet back at the same location at 3 p.m. for a wrap up.
