About This Walk
Join us for a relaxed afternoon of exploring just some of what Lake of the Woods Forest Preserve has to offer. We will focus on 3 spots, all located within a very short walking distance of each other.
- At 1pm: park and meet at the Museum of the Grand Prairie. Two floors of exhibits present architecture, agriculture, trades and occupations, decorative arts, and childhood and domestic life of the time. There is no entrance fee and they have a gift shop, water and nice bathroom facilities there.
- After about 30 minutes or so, we’ll go outside to the Mabery Gelvin Botanical Gardens located nearby. A beautiful area with a waterfall and a bridge over a koi pond.
- Then we’ll take a short walk in the woods of about a half mile loop on the Rayburn-Purnell Woods path. Or if you prefer, you can instead go back to the museum or the botanical garden for more photos there!
Afterward, we’d love to have you join us at the Mahomet Family Restaurant, 1002 Commercial Dr, Mahomet, IL for refreshments or a meal and to chat.
NOTE: Dress appropriately for the weather. In case of rain: If it is a light rain, we can still do the outside activities so come prepared for the weather (hot, cold, rain or shine). If the rain is heavy or if it is stormy, we’ll just spend more time inside at the museum. Be sure to bring sunscreen and bug spray if desired or needed.

Follow the steps under the contest tab when you go to your page for our walk. There is even a link to submit the photos from your cell phone. Hope you get a chance to submit photos!
