About This Walk

Let’s take a walk through Koreshan State Park, where we will photograph the old buildings and equipment, the beautiful natural surroundings and the kayaks floating down the Estero River.  If we get lucky, we might spot some wildlife, like a gopher tortoise on our walk. Bring your camera, some water, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes and get ready to have some fun.  Note that Koreshan charges a fee for parking.  You can pay at the ranger station BUT ONLY USING THEIR QR CODE (found on the sign at the entrance) AND A CREDIT CARD.  The park opens at 8am, so if you plan on paying with the QR code, you should arrive by 8am.  HOWEVER, I recommend paying ONLINE in advance at:

Thank youOctober 5th, 2024

Thanks to all of you for coming out and making today a really fun event. It was great to meet you and to learn about your creative styles and interests in photography. Hope we avoid the hurricane this week. Stay safe.

Are you ready to go for tomorrow????October 4th, 2024

Some final notes for tomorrow/Saturday.
• We will START the walk at 815am at the SE corner of the park. Please arrive around 8am to get through the gates.
• To get to the meeting location: make your FIRST right after going past the booth. You will see a brown sign right there that says “Historic Settlement” and an arrow to the right. That’s your turn!. Follow that road until it ends at the parking lot.
• Watch for tortoise crossing!
• There are restrooms right at that parking lot.
• Koreshan charges $5 for parking ($4 if you are the SOLE occupant of the vehicle) – it’s best to pay BEFORE you arrive ON SATURDAY MORNING using Koreshan’s website: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/koreshan-state-park.
• I will be wearing a Navy blue t-shirt with a white logo of a photographer and a red ball cap.
• Wear comfortable walking shoes, bring water, and bring your camera and/or smartphone.

Update 9/27/2024September 27th, 2024

The Kelby Photo Walk is next Saturday (10/5) at 815am and I am looking forward to meeting all of you. A couple more folks have signed up since my last update. This may be a bit repetitive for those who signed up weeks ago and received the preceding updates, but I don’t want the new folks to miss anything. So here is an update in bullet format:
1) Entrance, parking & meeting: We will meet at the southeast corner of Koreshan State Park and begin our walk at 815am. The gates open at 8am. You have to pay for parking. To ensure we start on time, please pay for parking in advance at: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/koreshan-state-park. Unfortunately, the Kelby organization does not allow me to include images but you can see a MAP and sample photos here: https://www.richardshermanphotography.com/koreshan24
2) The environment: We will be shooting with early morning light, so there will be lots of long shadows. Remember that shadows can be used for lots of things, like adding drama or providing “balance” in an image. Also, think about converting your images to black and white or sepia tones with the long shadows and old buildings on property. In addition to the old buildings, there are rockers, lots of trees, and a river runs through it (hoping for kayakers). There are ample opportunities for macro shots as well.
3) Your equipment: If you only have a camera phone, then you will be fine (newer ones even do Macro). If you are working with a mirrorless or DSLR, you will likely be shooting in the 24mm-100mm range. Bring comfortable shoes for walking, and maybe some bug spray. It will probably be muggy so you might want to bring some water. You probably won’t need a tripod.
4) Charity, charity, charity. Remember, the walk is free but Kelby is raising money for The Springs of Hope Kenya Orphanage in Kenya. Any and all donations help.
Thanks everyone,
Rich

Update on 9/13/2024 for Koreshan Photo WalkSeptember 13th, 2024

Hello Kelby PhotoWalkers,
This is Rich Sherman, your photo walk leader. We are creeping closer to the big day and we now have about 10 individuals signed up.

Some of you may just bring a cellphone camera, which is perfectly fine. However, most people will bring a camera body and as a long-time photo instructor, I know that leads to questions about lens choice. When I go to Koreshan, most of my shots are in the 24-100mm range. Occasionally I will use a stronger zoom lens (100-200mm). If you are a macro lover, then be sure to bring your macro lens. But your “go-to” focal length is going to be in the 240-100mm range.

The event is free, however, please note:
1) there is the option to make a donation to The Springs of Hope Kenya Orphanage, the charity for this photo walk. I would encourage you to do so, because even a small donation can go a long way in Africa.
2) Koreshan charges $5 for parking. It is MESSY to pay at the entrance—you have to use a QR code listed on the board at the entrance, then you have to enter your credit card into your cellphone, and all the while time is ticking and cars might be lined up behind you (note: we will start at 815am sharp). It is much easier to just pay for parking BEFORE you arrive using Koreshan’s website: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/koreshan-state-park

We will meet at the southeast corner of the property and begin at 815am. I created a map and added it to my website so you can see exactly where to meet. Unfortunately, the Kelby organization does not allow me to include photos with these updates so this was the only option. Here is the link to the map, and some other photos of Koreshan for reference: https://www.richardshermanphotography.com/koreshan24

In closing, since you registered early…please be patient as you will see some repetition in the updates.

All the best,
Rich

Update 8/31/24 for Koreshan Photo WalkAugust 31st, 2024

Hello Everyone!
Rich Sherman here. You folks are the first ones to register, so thank you. We still have plenty of time before the walk, but just a few points:
–Remember that the walk is free, but that Koreshan State Park charges a fee for entrance/parking. There is QR code at the entrance, gate but that isn’t terribly fast, so your best bet is to pay in advance at: https://www.floridastateparks.org/parks-and-trails/koreshan-state-park. Then you can cruise in and relax.
–Unfortunately, I am not able to add photos or maps directly to this system (nor hyperlinks), but I created a folder on my website with the map of where we will meet (SE corner of the park after the entrance gate) and a couple shots of Koreshan. You can see the map and photos here: https://www.richardshermanphotography.com/koreshan24.
–I will try send out another update or two before the class, BUT, you will probably see a lot of this info again, since the “newbies” won’t have the details you now have.
–Rich
