About This Walk
Parking: I recommend parking in the Neil Ave. garage which is just north of the North Bank Park Pavilion. However, if you wish, there is plenty of on-street parking right on Long Street (33) on either side of the pavilion on the same side of the street as the pavilion. Should you choose to park on the street (and you’re lucky enough to find an open spot), you will need to pay through the ParkMobile app or the ParkColumbus app.
Walk Description: There are many interesting subjects for your photos including architecture, history, landscape/flowers, and I’m sure some interesting people will be out and about. We will meet at 10:00 AM on the west side of the pavilion building. The park is right on the Scioto River and as we walk towards downtown, there are wonderful views of the skyline. We are pretty close to downtown at this point, so a wide-angle lens may be what you want to use here. Bordering the bottom of the frame are railroad tracks – maybe we will see a train. As we continue east along the river, we will see several interesting historical markers near the US District Court. First is the Brickell Memorial honoring Columbus’ first resident. Next is the Spanish-American War Memorial. From here, we will go north on Marconi then west on Spring. We will walk under those same railroad tracks and find ourselves at the McFerson Commons Park. This land is part of the old Ohio Penitentiary and there’s a historical marker for when Confederate General John Morgan escaped from the Ohio Pen. At the far end of this triangular park is the relocated Columbus Union Station Arch. I expect we’ll get a lot of good pictures here. Next, we will evaluate our time and decide to continue or have we used all our time. If we decide to continue, we are very close to Nationwide Area (home of the Bluejackets) and a little west is Huntington Field where the Clippers play. Should we decide it is time for lunch, there are many restaurants in this area. Half a block to the west is the Sunny Street Cafe (if you’re thinking breakfast fare) that has really good reviews. Also nearby is pizza (right beside the arch), Mexican (just across Nationwide), a Peruvian sandwich shop about half a block east, Tim Hortons (also across Nationwide). I think I am going to choose Wario’s Beef and Pork, about another block east – I’ve heard they have the best cheesesteak in the city.
Updates: Please let me know if there is something in this area that you think would be good to add to the itinerary and I’ll see if I can fit it in. Also, I put the ending place the same as the starting place. After being involved in several photowalks, I’ve discovered people tend to go their own way towards the end, especially when they’re hungry, so we will end in the general area around Nationwide Boulevard. It isn’t too far to get back to your vehicle, especially if you parked in the garage.
