About This Walk
Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve is one of the jewels of DuPage Country open spaces. This 2,503-acre preserve borders Darien and Lemont, along the Des Plaines river, and is known for its Rocky Glen waterfall (the area is named for Seymour “Bud” Waterfall, an early president of the Board of Commissioners so a waterfall was added to quell the many questions about where it was in the preserve), Sawmill Creek bluff overlook, and extensive trails with great opportunities for plant and wildlife photos.
Waterfall Glen contains 740 native plants species, 75 percent of all the plants known to grow naturally in DuPage County. More than 300 species of mammals, birds, fish, amphibians and reptiles and another 300 of invertebrates use the forest preserve either year-round or during their migrations.
There are 11 miles of trails across gently rolling to hilly terrain. We’ll focus on the gently rolling paths around Sawmill Creek in our walk. Afterwards, we can gather at the Rocky Glen Falls parking lot, then head out to the brand-new Burr Ridge McDonalds, about a mile away on Rt. 83 for lunch and picture sharing.
DIRECTIONS TO ROCKY GLEN FALLS LOT: From I-55, take Cass Avenue 1.5 miles south of Northgate Road to Bluff Road. Take Bluff Road 0.3 mile east to the lot.
