Where We Will Meet

Edinburgh Castle Esplanade

Where The Walk Will End

Kilderkin Pub on the Canongate

About This Walk

We will walk the Royal Mile, starting from the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle all the way down to Holyrood Palace. Along the way, we’ll be dipping into some of the closes to find the shots that tourists don’t always see. It’s also a great opportunity for some street photography, particularly if the weather is sunny. I run photography workshops in Edinburgh, and I know the city well. If you’re happy with using your camera, then enjoy taking pictures as we traverse the Scottish mile (which is a wee bit longer than a standard mile). If you’d like a bit of help, then I’m happy to offer my assistance during the walk. We’ll finish the walk with a drink and a chat in the Kilderkin pub, which is opposite the Scottish Parliament on the Canongate.

Submit your photosOctober 14th, 2023

Hello everyone,

The weather is a wee bit better than last Saturday! Don’t forget to submit your best photo from last Saturday’s walk by logging into – final entries need to submitted by midnight Eastern Time, so that’s 5am UK time tomorrow morning.

Updated meeting pointOctober 7th, 2023

Hi everyone,

I’ve just checked the weather forecasts for today, and the predicted rain this morning is the same as we would usually have in one month. I’m sure nobody wants camera equipment getting damaged, so I am proposing a change to the walk. Can we please meet inside the National Museum of Scotland at the Frensel Lighthouse Light, which is in the middle of the Grand Gallery, at 2pm instead?

There’s lots of interesting shots inside the museum. We can then stay there for a while and then take a short walk to St Giles cathedral for more indoor shots. We can then walk down to the Kilderkin and dry out around 3:30 – 4pm.

Sorry for the late change, but I’m sure you can understand why it is necessary. If the rain slows down a little then we can walk some of the mile, but we’ll take that call this afternoon. Any problems, send me a text on 07977 035847.

Saturday Meet DetailsOctober 6th, 2023

Hi everyone,

The weather forecast for tomorrow’s photo walk isn’t looking great, and it will almost certainly be wet. However, we’ll still give it a go to get some photos. Just make sure that you come prepared for the conditions. Good waterproofs and a bag that’s easy to reach in and out of to store your camera.

We will meet on the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle at 2pm on the opposite side of the entrance to the security box. If you could arrive just before as we will leave on time, to reduce the amount of time we are standing in the rain. We’re then going to head down the Lawnmarket, where there are quite a few closes that offer shelter. If the rain is really strong, I have a second option to head toward the National Museum of Scotland, as there are also some great photo opportunities in there. We’ll then head further down the Royal Mile onto the Canongate, again using closes for rain cover. We’ll finish the walk in the Kilderkin Pub around 3:30-4pm, which is opposite the Scottish Parliament.

I hope to see you all tomorrow, as the rain can give us lots of opportunities to use puddles and reflections creatively.

Looking forward to SaturdayOctober 4th, 2023

Hello everyone. We have nearly 20 people signed up for the walk on Saturday. It would be great if there were a few more, so please share with any photography pals.

I’ll put up a meeting point on Friday morning and a suggested route for our walk. I look forward to meeting up with you all on Saturday.

  1. Hi
Just signed up and was wondering how many are signed up.

Looking forward to walking down the high street as its a place i really should go to more.

  2. I was hoping to do something but I don’t think the forecast rain will agree with my arthritis

  3. Hi Derek,

We have 20 signed up at the moment, which is a nice-sized group to get around the streets of a busy city. I’ve just put up an update for meeting points, and we do have a contingency location for the bad weather (maybe more than one).

  4. Hi.
Just seen there ate quite a few diversions and Road closures around the city centre tomorrow, so I might not be able to make the event.

  5. Hi Emma,

The march is starting at 12:30 from Holyrood Park and should be past the top of the Royal Mile by 1:30 so we shouldn’t be disrupted by it.

  6. Rich, I popped on to thank both you and Fiona for a great day out. Thoroughly enjoyed myself taking images I wouldn’t normally do. Cheer Angie
