About This Walk
This photowalk will be about 2.5 miles long, almost all of it on level ground. There is one segment, about an eighth of a mile long, that has a bit of an incline, which will require both a downhill and an uphill walk. And another segment of about 50 yards will be a pedestrian cement stairway, downhill only. We’ll go at a slow enough pace to give everyone on a chance to get plenty of pictures. We hope to finish the walk in a little bit over 2 hours, and then meet together afterwards at a local restaurant to share our images with each other and to talk about our walk and shots made and missed, and about photography in general.
We will meet at the top of a bluff on a city street and begin our walk no later than 3:20, so please make a point to arrive on time. Parking will be on the street at the meeting address. We will navigate down the above-mentioned steps, past a small waterfall, and emerge on the street below at the base of the only “vertical street” in the country, Oregon City’s Municipal Elevator. We’ll make our way to Main Street and explore northwards for a few blocks, then turn around on come back on the opposite side of the street. This will give us plenty of street photography opportunities as well as architecture shots. Then we’ll cross and return over the Willamette River via the Arch Bridge, giving us views of Willamette Falls and a rarely seen view of the bridge itself from below. Then we’ll make our way back to the “vertical street”, take the elevator up to the top of the bluff and explore a city park, called McLaughlin Promenade, that has magnificent overlooking views of Willamette Falls and an old paper mill that is now being renovated.
At 5:30 we’ll gather at a local restaurant to rest our feet, get a bit of refreshment, and talk and share about our time together. This will be the end of the “official” part of the photowalk. But wait! There’s more!
Bonus time: Sunset at the park and Blue Hour in the elevator. If you want to stay and continue, sunset is at 6:38, which is always a great time to shoot the falls from above. And as it gets dark, the inside of the elevator’s viewing area gets very reflective of its surroundings, providing very interesting light patterns that are very “Sci-Fi-ish”.
Wear weather-appropriate clothing and good walking shoes.
Well, I’m excited. Tomorrow (Saturday) is the big day, and it looks like the weather will be quite nice. I look forward to meeting you all and embarking on a fun time together.
Thank you, everyone. It was good to get to know you a little and have a bit of fun together. Don’t forget to pick out your best photo and submit it to the contest. Who knows? You just might win something. 🙂 I hope to do this again next year. Maybe we’ll see each other again then.
Thank you George for leading this! It was a lovely walk and very fun meeting you and everyone else!
