Where We Will Meet

Southernmost parking lot on Cypress st.-Julian B. Lane park

Where The Walk Will End

Same spot as the starting point

About This Walk

I spent 26 years working for the city of Tampa as a Firefighter Paramedic.  I have spent a lot of time on the streets of downtown Tampa day and night doing my job.  I have an extensive knowledge of the layout of downtown.  On the job my attention was on saving lives and property. I didn’t have time to pause and really experience all the beauty the downtown area has to offer.  However, since retiring from Tampa Fire Rescue I have had the time/ability to return back to the streets with a different focus and explore one of my passions…Long Exposure Night Photography.

Downtown Tampa is beautiful at night, especially the Riverwalk area, which runs along the Hillsborough river.  The night changes everything. The harsh light of the day is gone and it’s much cooler.  The city lights turn on in the buildings, street lights come on and the bridges are illuminated in ever changing color from LED lights.  All this light is reflected in the water as well.  It is truly a well designed area that warrants spending time there photographically. It would be a pleasure showing you a beautiful part of the city of Tampa after hours when the real “magic” happens.

I will be hosting a free class prior to the walk for those of you who would like to learn about long exposure/night photography prior to the actual walk.  I will announce the date and details later.  It will be held at the starting point for the walk (Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park – 1001 N Blvd, Tampa, FL).

For those of you who attended the last photo walk I led for KelbyOne a few years ago it is the same location as before.  We will start our walk at the park and walk along the riverfront in a big loop, crossing two bridges and returning to the staring point where you parked your vehicle.  It is an easy walk, probably a mile total length and flat, as this is Florida 🙂

After the walk, for those interested in winding down, having a bite to eat and a drink or two we could meed at a local spot.  It’s about 2 miles from our walk area.  Here is the address of :  Rick’s on the River – 2305 N Willow Ave, Tampa, FL 33607 – closes at 12am.

Hope to see you on the walk.  We will have a lot of fun and get some great pictures in the process!

Cheers,

Daryl

Photo Contest Submission!August 18th, 2022

Thanks to you this years photowalk was an extreme success! I had 65 official registrants, of which at least 50+ attended! This was double the last walk in 2019. It was awesome meeting and spending time with each and every one of you. I apologize if I didn’t get a chance to meet and talk to you personally. I tried to do my best to do so but there was just too many. I needed to clone myself I guess.
Just a reminder about the photo contest. If you are interested in submitting a photo into the contest time is running out. I know a few people have posted photos to the gallery. Submissions started on the 15th and end on the 26th at 1159pm ET. So, pick your best photo and edit it! Save it to less than 5mb. I know it’s small…but, that’s the rules 🙂 Log in with the username and password you initially created to sign up for the walk and submit your photo. Thank you again for a great walk and for supporting a good cause. I hope to see y’all again next year for an even BIGGER walk! Good Luck on the contest!

FYI: The pre-walk training class was also a success. I had over 15 people come to that on the 6th. I have been asked by many people if I do photography training. The answer is yes I do. I am available for local mini workshops ( basically a photowalk but with a max of 5 people) at a location. The nice thing about a small group is the individual attention I can give to everyone attending.
Note: I hate solicitations. That said I wanted to respond to answer the inquiries. If you would like to be notified of an upcoming workshop please send me your contact info to my email address:
daryljohnsonphotography@yahoo.com
I will add you to my notification list. Otherwise, This will be the last I mention of it.
See you next year…or sooner!
Happy Shooting!
Daryl

After walk social @ Ricks on the River!August 12th, 2022

FYI: Immediately after the walk for those who would like to get together for a while we will be heading to a local spot just a couple miles away. They do not accept reservations. It’s just 1st come but she did say they have an overflow room that might be available for a large group. They are open until 12pm so we will have time after the event. If you are interested give it some thought. I’ll get a head count when we meet tomorrow so I have a better idea of how many. Then I’ll contact Ricks again to follow up.

Parking updateAugust 12th, 2022

Parking info:

There are a few options for parking.

1) south lot – off cypress. (In the park)
2) north lot – in the park
3) across the street from north lot is an area
4) street parking on cypresses st
5) Poe Parking Garage
(813) 274-8179
https://goo.gl/maps/P1ex7dutTYCJH1ZQ7
Note: if you use Poe garage it will not accommodate taller vehicles like a van.
If you park there, which is a good option, you’ll leave the garage, walk across the bridge, turn right on cypress to the south parking lot of Julian Lane park. Everyone will be by the water.
I would highly recommend coming early to assure your parking space wherever that happens to be. Bring some water. It’ll be warm initially but cooling as that big orange ball in the sky goes away 🙂
See ya there!

Pre-walk class – Success!August 7th, 2022

Thanks to everyone that came to the pre-walk class Saturday evening. I think I had about 15 or so people all toting their gear with smiles on their faces. It turned out to be a fantastic night. It was nice to meet you all!
Well, this Saturday the 13th is rapidly approaching. So charge your batteries, empty your cards and clean your lenses. Make sure you have everything you need already ready so you don’t forget anything last minute. Done that 🙂
See you there!

Free Prewalk Night Photography Training/Demo ClassAugust 4th, 2022

This is a repeat post for the new walker signup’s.

As I mentioned initially I will be doing a free Pre-walk training/demo to help you prepare for the event. If you are interested in learning more about the gear and techniques of long exposure/blue hour/night photography then this class is for you. I will have an actual photoshoot where I will demonstrate the way I shoot long exposures at night. Topics covered will be gear needed/recommended, composition, focusing in low light, adjusting and manipulating exposure in manual mode…and more. Please feel free to bring your camera, tripod, cable release and extra batteries to shoot after the demo where you can shoot your own photos using what you learned. I will assist you and answer any questions you may have. You should be familiar with your cameras controls, menu and using manual mode, being able to change exposures using ISO, aperture and Shutter Speed prior to the demo to benefit the most however, please come with whatever level of skill or equipment you have. This is a learning class. Fun, informative and nonjudgmental.

Pre-walk Training/Demo class Info…

Location: Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park 1001 N Boulevard Tampa, Fl

Date/Time: 8/6/22@ 7:30pm (park at the south lot closest to Cypress st) Meetup at the waterfront.

Daryl Johnson Hello Don & John. Thanks for signing up!

Armando Bruck Hope you have a great PhotoWalk, success!!!

Jennifer Clemons Looking forward to the walk, I love lowlight and night photography.

Daryl Johnson Hi Armando! Long time. Hope all is well. Maybe I’ll see you again at another Photoshop World event hopefully. Take care! Thanks!

Daryl Johnson Hi Jennifer! I’m happy you signed up. Looking forward to seeing you!

Craig Callan Looking forward to this!

Daryl Johnson Great Craig! Good to have you onboard. See you there!

Beth McNabb Where is the best place to park? I know parking can be a little tricky downtown.

Daryl Johnson Hi Beth. Thanks for signing up. The best spot to park is at the southernmost lot which is off cypress st. That’s where we’ll meet. If by chance it’s full then there’s street parking on cypress and the northernmost lot at the park works too

Daryl Johnson Good afternoon Photo Walkers! The Scott Kelby's Worldwide Photowalk 2022 on August 13th is rapidly approaching. I am looking forward to meeting and spending time with everyone. I think at this point there are about 32 walkers "officially" signed up. There are still a few people that have signed up through the Meetup app that haven't "officially" signed up. They MUST go to the link below, which is KelbyOne's signup site and sign up there. If you haven't done so you will NOT be eligible to upload a picture to be entered into the photo contest where you could win stuff! Anyway, so there is still room for more, spread the word! Craig Callan Daryl, Hi, I just heard from two members of the PHCC Camera Club who would like to come, but are unable to sign up at the website, there is n longer a sign-up link. I just checked, and I can't find it either. They are Barbara Kaiser and Ramona Nykoderm. Can you add them to you list, or tell me where on the page the sign-up link is? Thanks, Craig

Daryl Johnson Hi Craig. Sorry for the confusion. Here is the link again. I just checked it and it works. Thank you https://worldwidephotowalk.com/walk/tampa-riverwalk-blue-hour-night-photography-photo-walk/

Susan Hill Daryl, We really enjoyed this walk with you a few years ago and are looking forward to doing it again. For all of you new folks, Daryl is a great leader and is very helpful with settings, and your technical questions. I was very happy with my photos last time.

Daryl Johnson Thank you Susan for the kind words! I’m looking forward to seeing you again. It’s been a few years (2019). See you on Saturday!

Maria Rock Hi Daryl and All Photowalkers, I just signed up today! I'm looking forward to walking with you all tomorrow. :) Maria [@mrockphoto]
