About This Walk

This ~3.5 km circular photowalk is a 2-hour, multi-phase photography loop designed to showcase the visual contrasts of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary. It transitions photographers from the town’s urban, 17th-century architectural heritage into the natural, scenic environment of the River Suir and the Blueway.

This 2-hour photography plan runs from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, taking full advantage of mid-morning light moving from Clonmel’s architectural core along the Suir towpath and back through the town’s laneways.

1. Start & West Gate Approach:10:30 AM – 10:55 AM (25 mins).

  • 10:30 AM – 10:40 AM | The Main Guard: Gather under the 17th-century arches. Frame street-level compositions looking west straight down O’Connell Street.

  • 10:40 AM – 10:48 AM | West Gate: Walk west along O’Connell Street to the West Gate. Use the high stone archway to frame incoming traffic and pedestrians.

  • 10:48 AM – 10:55 AM | Bridge Street & Old Bridge: Turn down Bridge Street past Old St. Mary’s Church toward Old Bridge. Cross over toward Suir Island to shoot stone archway reflections and flowing water.

2. Suir Blueway & Wildlife Stretch:10:55 AM – 11:45 AM (50 mins).

  • 10:55 AM – 11:10 AM | Denis Burke Park: Head east along the northern riverbank path into Denis Burke Park. Capture swans, mallards and open views looking south toward the Comeraghs.

  • 11:10 AM – 11:25 AM | Gashouse Bridge: Walk under or across the historic 5-arch stone Gashouse Bridge onto the official Suir Blueway towpath heading east.

  • 11:25 AM – 11:45 AM | Carey’s Slip Stretch: Follow the quiet, tree-lined trail toward Carey’s Slip.

3. Return Loop & Historic Laneways: 11:45 AM – 12:15 PM (30 mins).

  • 11:45 AM – 12:00 PM | Towpath Return: Turn around near Carey’s Slip, retracing the path back west with differing lighting angles on the water.

  • 12:00 PM – 12:08 PM | Gashouse Bridge Cross: Recross the Gashouse Bridge onto Water Street.

  • 12:08 PM – 12:15 PM | Medieval Laneways: Cut north up through Mitchell Street or Nelson Street to photograph narrow stone lanes, colourful shopfronts and historic street entryways.

4. Final Wrap & Coffee Social:12:15 PM – 12:30 PM (15 mins).

  • 12:15 PM – 12:20 PM | Return to Main Guard: Meet at The Main Guard for a group photo to wrap up the walk.

  • 12:20 PM – 12:30 PM | Gladstone Street Transition: Walk onto Gladstone Street to settle into a local coffee shop for photo sharing and discussion.

Hi, I’m Nicola Corboy, a Clonmel native and a passionate photography enthusiast for over 20 years. As a member of the Clonmel Camera Club, my real passion lies in wildlife photography, as there’s nothing quite like capturing our hidden nature right on our doorstep.

I’ve designed this photowalk so us photographers can share our love for our hometown and show off the very best of what Clonmel has to offer. Together, we’ll explore everything from our town’s rich architectural and historical heritage to its vibrant urban streets, before heading along the Suir Blueway to spot and photograph our fantastic local river wildlife.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
