About This Walk

Hello WorldWide Photo Walk Walkers!

Last year I led a walk at the Lompoc Mission and several who attended said it would be fun to do Solvang, so, here we go…Our walk this year is in the quaint Danish Village of Solvang.

Many wanted the walk to be in the evening to capture the town with its beautiful sparkling lights, however several also wanted to walk during the day, so we’ll split the difference and the walk will include both. I didn’t want to scare anyone off with a huge timeframe for the walk, but I’ve set the start and ending time in a wide range so we can take photos during the day and when the sun has set as Solvang is beautiful after sunset. This will allow us to take photos in and around the mission and gardens, through the quaint streets of Solvang where there are parks, small museums, restaurants, etc. We’ll meet up at 3:00pm, take our group photo, (we can take our group photo either in front of the Mission or a brief walk, over to the next corner and take it with the famous Little Mermaid Statue/Fountain), plan our walk, some may walk in groups, some may want to wander on their own. We’ll meet for dinner and conversation at 7:15ish, at Copenhagen Sausage Garden. Don’t let the name sway you, they have everything from Pretzels to Burgers, Salads to Schnitzel and Sausages at affordable prices and it fits our Danish theme of the day! After we eat we can continue walking for anyone who would like to take night shots!

The walking path you want to walk Solvang is up to you. Wherever your creative powers take you that will best capture your vision of Solvang is great. Some of us may walk as a group, others not. It’s up to you!

Shoot as long as you like, but please meet back at 7:00 at Copenhagen Sausage Garden for a quick bite and storytelling about your day and your images. Then, feel free to go back out again to shoot night scenes.

There are a lot of great things to see and photograph in Solvang. Here’s a list of some highlights that are all within walking distance from our starting point at the Mission.

Santa Ines Mission and Gardens
Little Mermaid Fountain Statue (replica of the statue displayed on a rock by the waterside at the Langelinie promenade in Copenhagen, Denmark
Statue of Hans Christian Anderson (author of the Little Mermaid, the Ugly Duckling, the Emperor’s New Clothes, the Princess and the Pea and more).
Trolley and Horse Carriage (not only to photograph but fun to take the 25 minute ride, a bit pricey, but fun and informative).
Danish Architecture, beautiful facades, many buildings with thatched roofs, rooftops with stork nests, the Tower a replica of the Rundetaarn in Copenhagen, several Windmills (there are five scattered around town)
Solvang Clock Tower
Many Picturesque restaurant patios with umbrellas
Danish Pastries. Lots of great bakeries with beautiful Danish treats such as the famous Aebleskivers, a traditional Danish dessert (you may want to try those if you’ve never had one!)
Lots of interesting shops, from antique stores and a Shoe Store with a giant clog out front, to the Jule Hus (Christmas House) building, with its red facade, beautiful from the outside but you won’t want to miss going inside to experience Christmas any time of year!
Wine Tasting Rooms, lots of them!
Olive Tasting Room
WindHarp  (a bit of a walk, 636 Atterdag Road. From the Mission it’s about 0.8 mile, about a 15/20 minute walk) you’ll pass the historic Bethania Luthern Church on this walk
People watching! Tourists from all over the world and much more!

It will be great to see many of you that I only see once a year and hope we can also make some new friends!

Digital – film – mobile – photographers at all skill levels are welcome and we’re excited to see you!

PS If you are so inclined you may want arrive earlier in the day to enjoy one or more of the museums Solvang has to offer. Make sure you check for opening and closing times!  If you have any questions you can email me at: photobyvivian@gmail.com

And the winner is……..October 16th, 2023

And the winner is……Jerry Bunin. Congratulations Jerry. Jerry’s image will be placed into the International Worldwide photowalk competition and he’s also won a $25 Visa Gift Card. My job as walk leader was to choose the image I thought best captured and represented our walk. His image captured that in my opinion. The reflected image of the architecture of a Danish building and a bicyclist riding past on a car displayed at the car show made it the winner.

You can see Jerry’s image and 78 more from several of our walkers in our group Flickr album. The Kelby WWPW home page will be shut down sometime soon but our Flickr page stays up for life! If you haven’t yet uploaded your favorite images to share with the group on Flickr, you can still do that at any time.

Again, congratulations Jerry.

Today’s the Day!October 14th, 2023

Today is the Deadline! If you haven’t yet already submitted your ‘one’ favorite photo on your Kelby WWPW page to enter in the competition, the submission deadline is: October 14, 2023 at 11:59pm ET. And…don’t forget. A couple of you still need to sign up on the Flickr page as well. A few of you have posted some great photos from our walk. You can sign up for a free account. Once you load photos to your own Flickr page, then you go to the group page and add those photos you would like to the Flickr Group page. It’s always fun to see what we each shot and saw during the walk. The Flickr page is a great tool just to have and share even without our PhotoWalk. Any questions, let me know. I can’t yet see the photos submitted for the contest. They will reveal those to me to choose the one image on the 21st. Questions, you can reach me at photobyvivian@gmail.com

We are on Copenhagen DriveOctober 7th, 2023

We are missing a few of our walkers. You can meet up with us on Copenhagen, we are photographing cars. Or you can walk on your own and meet us for dinner.

2 more days and a car show!October 5th, 2023

Hello Walkers! Two more days until #WWPW2023 Weather.com says it will be mostly a sunny day. We may get some clouds later in the day and perhaps a nice sunset! I just found out there is a car show on Saturday, the Annual Viking Classic Car Show in downtown on First Street and Copenhagen Drive from 10 to 5, so that may give us some cool cars to shoot as well! I look forward to seeing you all Saturday. Cheers!

Hello Walkers!October 2nd, 2023

Hello Walkers! We’re getting close and just a few days away from our Solvang Walk. As of today, Weather.com is indicating it will be a warm day so we’ll be sure to make a stop or two for something to drink along our walk. You may want to bring sunscreen and/or wear a hat. If you are staying for dinner and planning on shooting some night shots after we eat, be sure to bring a light jacket or sweater. It gets cool quickly. I have a map for each of you and we’ll go over our planned route (for those of you who want to walk together) when we meet. I’m looking forward to meeting some of you I’ve never met and seeing some old friends too. If you have any questions please feel free to use the discussion tab or email me at: photobyvivian@gmail.com See you on Saturday!

  1. I would like to join this walk. I will be traveling about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to get there and I would plan to spend the night, as I cannot drive at night. If you are familiar with the area, perhaps you could give me some suggestions on where I might stay within walking distance of the walk so that I can participate without worrying about driving at night. If there isn’t anything, I’ll work something out. Maybe I’ll just have to leave before the trip to pizza. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!

  2. Hi Debora. Well, there are many places depending on budget. I’m not sure which direction you are coming from however, Buellton which is just about a 5/10 minute drive from the center of town in Solvang and Lompoc which is about a 20 minute drive are probably more reasonable in price. I wish I had better suggestions for you, but Solvang is probably pricey. I know how you feel. I don’t drive at night either. I hope you can find something in one of those spots and join us! If I can think of anything else, I’ll let you know. If you like I can also post a note to see if anyone else may be spending the night, (because it’s a fun place to stay and visit) and perhaps would like to share. Vivian

  3. Hello. I signed up for this walk but never received an email confirmation. Could you please check if I’m on this walk? Michael Lewis

  4. Hi Michael. No, I don’t show you as signed up. Unfortunately the page isn’t showing me that I received an email either, so I just saw this. Can you try signing up again? Thanks, Vivian

  5. Hi, just wanted to let you know I will not be able to attend.
I could not find a button to cancel my registration.
    Cheers,
    Bruce

  6. Vivian:

I am equally honored and shocked by your decision to submit my photo. Thank you very much. I also thank Mary Shaffer who has had the skill and patience to teach me everything I know about taking photos.

    Jerry

  7. You’re very welcome Jerry. Fingers crossed for the International Competition with your image!
