About This Walk

Hi folks – it’s time once again to hoist our cameras and enjoy the gorgeous and lively area around the La Jolla Cove. This is a fun walk!
We’ll start at the cove, which is a great place to photograph sea lions, swimmers, waves and rock outcroppings. We’ll move around the Cove and head to Children’s Pool for some additional majesty. There’s a nice beach there and hopefully the sea walk will be open. From there, two paths emerge: (a) continue moving southward to hit the tidal pools or (b) head up into the charming village of La Jolla proper for ample street shooting. To round things off, we’ll have an early lunch at the venerable Jose’s Courtroom to swap stories, show off some photos and have some delicious food and drinks.

Tips: Dress for the weather and wear comfie walking shoes! As far as camera gear goes, you probably won’t need a tripod unless you plan to shoot some long exposures with ND filters. I usually bring my trusty 10-24mm wide-angle zoom for my Fuji X-T4 and might swap out for either a bigger zoom to capture the critters from afar or my stealthy 35mm if I’m going to do clandestine street shooting. 😉

I’ve led this walk several times and it’s always a blast, not only for the shooting aspect, but also the camaraderie! Hope to see you there!

PS: I also lead this walk each year in honor of my pal Bob Halligan (who formerly led it some years ago). Bob is no longer with us, and it’s a good way to reflect on the positive ways he impacted my life. 😉

Important Photo Contest updateOctober 7th, 2024

Hi gang,

Although I can’t see it on my “dashboard”, it appears that the Walker Photo Contest is live. Just log in to the Scenic La Jolla Cove walk and you’ll see a new Tab called Photo Contest or similar. Click on that and there will be a couple of links – one to the La Jolla Cove contest album and another for a Mobile Photography contest.

You’ll also see a video on how to register with SlickPic and upload your photos – you might recognize the speaker… hahaha..

IMPORTANT! I mis-spoke on Saturday. It’s critical that you only upload your BEST photos into the contest album. There’s a maximum of 5 today, so use them wisely.

Regarding the “behind-the-scenes” and other cool (but non-contest) images, save those. I’m negotiating w/ the Kelby folks and have presented a plan to convert that same contest album into a “memories of the walk” album AFTER the judging is complete. That would be easy for us, and the entire WWPW community would benefit

If they don’t go for it (this year), I’ll send a new private group upload album that just the 6 of us can use. 😉

La Jolla Cove photo walk itineraryOctober 5th, 2024

As posted in the discussion and descriprion, we’ll meet at the picnic tables near the Cove proper. Then, walk towards Children’s Pool and the Tide Pools. I would love for you guys to join me at Jose’s Courtroom for lunch beginning at 11am on Prospect Street!

  3. Hey gang – just a couple of days before the BIG event! I can’t wait to meet you all, and take some fun coastal shots…

    Remember to dress for the weather – looks like between 8am and 11am it will be partly cloudy and 65° rising to 75°. There’s always moisture in the air, so it can sometimes feel a little cooler and damper than the temperature might indicate. Text me at 858-337-7277 if you have any questions.

  7. Hey y’all. Thanks for uploading images to the contest album! There are soooo many good ones to choose from – and yes, Haresh, the fog is definitely a game-changer. Makes you look at the world a bit differently!

    I’ll let you know how things go with the BTS and non-Contest album. We have a very easy way to fuel this, but have to convince the KelbyOne guys to let us do it. Regardless, if they don’t want to play this year, *I* will create one for the Scenic La Jolla Cove Photo Walk.
