About This Walk

The Medieval Mile is a discovery trail running through the centre of Kilkenny city linking the 13th-century St Canice’s Cathedral and the 12th -century Anglo-Norman castle and featuring numerous medieval sites in between including the Tholsel (18th century), Kytlers Inn (13th century) and Rothe House (16th century) along with historic laneways linking streets. There is an intact round tower on the site of St Canices Cathedral where visitors can climb to the top to obtain panoramic views of the city and surrounding countryside. Kilkenny Castle has a large urban park with walking paths for visitors to enjoy.

It is intended to explore the locations starting with the Cathedral and all points along the route to Kilkenny Castle. There are plenty of photographic opportunities along the way including old shop fronts and of course the people of Kilkenny.

Hi everyone,
A final reminder and request to those who participated in the walk to bring along a selection of images from the walk – between 5 and 10, to tomorrow nights meeting of Kilkenny Photographic Society at the Pembroke Hotel in Patrick St. Non members are especially welcome. It will be a good opportunity to see how everyone fared on the day and to remind us how wet the day was :-). Looking forward to seeing you all there.

Thank YouOctober 6th, 2019

Hi everyone, firstly can I sincerely thank all of you for taking part in Kilkenny’s Medieval Mile Photowalk yesterday as part of Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk 2019. As everyone in Kilkenny knows the weather was just about as bad as it could have been with continuous rain throughout the afternoon and yet 20 photographers turned out and had a most enjoyable day despite the weather.
In addition, I wish to thank most sincerely Patricia Duff and the staff of Rothe House for being most generous in giving free admission to Rothe House to our photographers. I also wish to thank the staff of St Canices Cathedral who also facilitated us on the day.
Can I remind everyone that donations can be made to The Springs of Hope Orphanage in Kenya on the Worldwide Photo Walk webpage, to date, over $9,000 has been raised for this cause.
All of you should by now have received an email with instructions on how to enter the competition which is now open for entries. Remember, you can enter one image only from the walk and you must do so by Monday, October 14th. If anyone has any questions please contact me directly.
Finally, I wish to thank the staff of the Club House Hotel, Patrick St, Kilkenny for laying on wonderful food for us at the end of the walk. We had a most enjoyable get together in the bar following the walk.
Thanks again and best wishes.

4 Days to GoOctober 1st, 2019

Hi everyone, our walk takes place on Saturday next and we’ll meet at St Canices Cathedral at 3.00pm, I’ll be there about 2.45. Rothe House have kindly given us free admission and we will hand out tickets at the start of the walk for those who would like to avail of this opportunity. Please remember to dress For the weather, hopefully it’ll be kind to us on the day. Any kind of camera can be used and don’t forget to have your camera batteries charged and also bring a spare just in case. Also bring a couple of memory cards and a tripod or monopod if you wish. One person queried the copyright of images submitted for the competition and the response from the organisers is as follows: “KelbyOne reserves the right to use any walk photo submitted for promotional purposes. If the walker happens to win one of the categories, their photo will appear in Photoshop User Magazine and also may be used for advertising/promotional purposed for the next event.” Where an image is used the photographer will credited.
Finally, at the end of the walk we will have a get together in the Club House Hotel bar to discuss the walk and have some refreshments. Before the start of the walk I’ll be asking for numbers so that we can arrange for finger food to be ready. There will be a small charge for the refreshments which will be collected before we set off.
