Where We Will Meet

Where The Walk Will End

At Horizons Leisure & Learning Sanctuary

About This Walk

Horizons Leisure & Learning Sanctuary is located in the Hennops River Valley between Fourways and Hartbeespoort Dam. The venue comprises of Savanna, riverine forest, river frontage and spectacular views of the Magaliesberg mountain range complex. At this time of year, spring flora will be in vogue.

This venue is ideal for photographers with almost any particular interest. There is something for everybody. Landscapes, sunsets, river rapids, forests, flowers, you name it. There are also reasonably good Astro photography opportunities. Unfortunately on 5 October we will have a first-quarter moon rising at 11 AM and setting at just after midnight. This will make for difficult Milky Way and other Astro  photography. However,  the moon will be fair game as well the sunset.

Fauna is abundant, but shy. We may be lucky, but most species are nocturnal.

The river provides many photo opportunities both in respect of still water reflections as well as lively rapids for those who are interested in slowing down the world with their ND filters.

Macro photography lovers will find many opportunities, especially wildflowers, to bring those little things to larger-than-life.

I will guide the walk, as I know this property extremely well. I have lived here for almost 30 years. Walking will be easy-going, and cover approximately 2 to 3 km in all.

After the  sun has set, we will host a “bring and braai” at Horizons Leisure & Learning Sanctuary. So, bring folding chairs, your cooler box with meat, rolls and salad  as well as your preferred refreshment. We will provide fires and a beautiful Highveld night sky. Parking is plentiful and completely secure.
