About This Walk

Virginia City NV is a living breathing historical monument, we will walk the town and visit historical building, bars and shops. There are many photographic gems, including Saint Mary’s in the Mountains, The Mackay Mansion and Piper’s Opera House. The walk can be strenuous, and the air tends to cool down at night. We are expecting clear weather, however I suggest bringing a light jacket.

We will start and end at the Canvas Cafe, they will have drinks and snacks to offer for purchase. Anyone that would like a longer visit is welcome to hang out with me after the end of our walk to find some favorite haunts. The Canvas Cafe is offering a happy hour from 3 – 4 with drinks and appetizers for purchase. Come early and get know some of your fellow walkers. The Canvas will also have their dinner menu available from 6 – 8pm, chef Richard is world renowned and offers amazing meals.

The Mackay Mansion has graciously agreed to allow our photowalk access to their grounds and are offering a discounted tour for $5.00. You may take your tour prior to the walk, simply let them know you’re part of the walk for your special price.

I’ve been photographing Virginia City events and weddings for several years now and know the town quite well. It’s rumored we may see a few guests from the past.

Best equipment to bring would be a 24-70mm or any other zoom lens or your cell phone and all levels of skill are welcome.

Bryan Varney Greeting Melody, I've joined the walk today but depending on how the morning goes might not make it. It looked like there were still plenty of openings and I do hope to make it there. We plan to drive Monitor Pass in the morning/early afternoon for the Fall color :-) Hope to meet you Saturday! Deborah Zajac I woke up this morning to the biggest surprise I've had in a long, long time. My image was selected to be the winner! Thank you so much, Melody! All the images submitted are just lovely. I'm deeply honored, stunned, and excited! Thank you, again for leading a fun, and interesting walk. I enjoyed it very much. Deborah

Melody Hoover Hello Deborah, Thank you for letting me know you were notified, you photo shows great use of natural light, the rule of thirds and getting down low for a different perspective was creative. Nicely done, congratulations. The choice was not easy, the other submissions showed great framing and lighting. The two portraits are amazing and I would absolutely put them in a professional portfolio, the eyes in both have so much to say. The Silent Riders walking down "C" Street have really good depth and the one that has the buildings in black and white with color in the walkers and the flags shows good storytelling in editing. I loved the fun captured at the Silver Queen with skeleton and the roulette table, it's nice to see what everyone notices during the walk. Thank you all for joining and I hope to see you again next year. Best wishes and keep taking photos. Melody

Bryan Varney Congratulations Deborah Zajac! I love the shallow depth of field in your image! And thank you again to Melody :-) The Mackay Mansion was a great place to spend some time. I look forward to next years walk!

Melody Hoover Thank you Bryan for all your help, I will absolutely guide again next year and will keep your notes for building next year's walk to be bigger and more interesting.

Brian Struthers Congratulations Deborah, beautiful pic !
