About This Walk
The development of barns in Connecticut was driven by the history of agriculture as changes in farming techniques, building technology and architectural tastes occurred. There are over 200 barns listed in the Connecticut State Register of Historic Places.
We won’t be visiting all 200 barns but will start at Northwest Park in Windsor. We’ll then travel to Holcomb Farm in West Granby, which is part of the Granby Land Trust. The main barn has been renovated in 2014. There will be plenty of photographic opportunities of the barn and surrounding grounds. We’ll then head a short distance down the road to the Lyman Wilcox Barn which was built around 1857. This small structure features a cupola atop the roof and round windows on one side. We’ll travel back to Northwest Park around noon when the tobacco museum inside a tobacco barn opens. For those who wish to stay, we’ll travel to a nearby restaurant for a late lunch and share stories and images from the day.
