Where The Walk Will End

About This Walk
We will do a 1-1/2 mile walk through Savannah’s downtown section, starting at the south end of Forsyth Park and photographing the Saturday morning Farmer’s Market. From the Farmer’s Market we will proceed north through Forsyth Park, photographing sports and events taking place in the park as well as people we might meet along the way. We will stop at Savannah’s famous fountain to take photographs and to try getting a group shot of all the participating walkers. From there, we will proceed up Bull Street where will photograph in the squares and the outsides of shops along the way. We will proceed to the Hyatt on Bay Street where for safety reasons we will take the elevator down to River Street (as opposed to trying to navigate the historic steps leading down to River Street). Once on River Street, we will walk toward the JW Marriott Plant Riverside where our walk will conclude. There will be many opportunities to capture great photographs as we walk along River Street. Note that walkers will be on their own to get back to their cars from here. It’s another 1.5 miles back to Brighter Day (total round trip is 3 miles).
A brief bio of myself is as follows:
I, J Lanning Smith (Jim) am an award winning photographer whose photographs have been displayed in exhibits at the Art League of Hilton Head, the Society of Bluffton Artists, the Coastal Discovery Museum, Port Royal Sound Maritime Museum, the Hilton Head Library, Bluffton Library, Hilton Head Hospital and the Southeast Center for Photography in Greenville, SC.
While I am mostly self taught as a photographer, I have taken workshops with several highly recognized photographers including Robert Rommel, Julia Anna Gospodarou, Bryan Peterson, John Barclay, Les Saucier and Art Becker. I have also studied photography at the Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD) during its Summer Educators Program.
I am a member of the Art League of Hilton Head as well as the Society of Bluffton Artists, Carolina Nature Photographers Association, the Photographic Society of America, the Photography Club of Sun City Hilton Head (Past President) and the Camera Club of Hilton Head Island (past Vice President).
Participation in this event is entirely voluntary, and my role as the leader of it is simply to provide a structured walk where interesting photographs can be taken and to help photographers with their photographic questions. I take no responsibility for your safety. All participants will be responsible for their own safety and for ensuring you are healthy enough to participate in this walk. Participants can participate in the full walk or you may drop out at any point. I will not be watching to see if you are with the group or not.
Change in PlansOctober 4th, 2024
Hi, We have 11 photographers signed up for tomorrow’s walk. An unfortunate circumstance has occurred though in that I have come down with something that has left me wit a splitting headache, sore throat and overall lacking in energy. So, I as your leader for tomorrow’s walk won’t be able to make it. My hope is that this won’t affect the rest of you however. Everyone can still meet at the south end of Forsyth Park across from Brighter Day and then proceed through the park and up Bull Street to River Street and over to the JW Marriott. You can elect a new leader when you meet in the morning or you can work as a self-managed group without a designated leader. I’m sorry that I can’t make it. I was really looking forward to this. Jim
Details for the WalkSeptember 28th, 2024
Hello Walkers! It is now one week until we meet to do our photowalk through downtown Savannah. I hope everyone is looking forward to it. I know that I’m looking forward to meeting all of you. I want to go over a few details for the walk.
We will meet at the South end of Forsyth Park (across the street from Brighter Day Market and by the statue at Bull and Park Streets. Bring your cameras or your phones or both. And be sure to bring water with you. We have a fair number of people signed up and I expect more will sign up this week. So please be aware that I as the group leader will not be able to keep track of everyone nor take any responsibility for anyone’s safety. Each person is doing this on their own and is responsible for their own safety before, during and after the walk. You can do as much or as little of the walk as you want to do. There are no requirements.
We will move in increments starting with the Farmer’s Market in Forsyth Park and we will try to regroup with everyone when we get to the fountain. If possible, we will try to do a group photograph at the fountain at about 11:45. Then we will move up Bull Street and try regrouping at each square taking about 15 minutes between each square.
When we get to Bay Street, we will proceed down to River Street. There are three ways to do this. For those wanting to take the steps down, you can do so. Please note that you do so at your own risk. The steps are historic and stone. Or you can walk down the cobblestone street by city hall. Or you can go into the Hyatt on Bay Street and take the elevator down to River Street. That is probably the safest way to get down to River Street. Once on River Street, we will proceed toward the Talmadge Bridge and end our walk at the River Plant Marriott where there is a lobby with plenty to photograph as well. There are restaurants in there for the hungry and thirsty as well.
If you park by Brighter Day then you will end about 1-1/2 miles from your car. You can walk back or you can take an Uber back. You can park closer to the end point if you want but you will likely then need to pay for parking. If you plan to do that, then you may want to download the Park Savannah app on to your phone which will allow you to pay for parking from your phone.
And please don’t forget to submit the images you take to Scott Kelby’s website for the walk. I’m looking forward to meeting all of you.
Jim
Has anyone else stepped up to fill the role as the photowalk leader?
Anyone else here? Gonna start walking & photographing. If others are here, let’s meet at the fountain about 11:45 for a photo. I have on white Photo walk shirt from 2 years ago and light jeans.
I was there and I didn’t see anyone. 🙁
