Where We Will Meet

We'll start outside Dance Base on the Grassmarket

Where The Walk Will End

Wll end in Holyrood 9A on Holyrood Road

About This Walk

This route through Edinburgh’s Old Town is one I like to use for my Switch to Manual photography workshops. Starting in the Grassmarket we have impressive views of the castle then make our way along the Grassmarket to Victoria Street. JK Rowling based Diagon Alley on this little street which leads us up to the Royal Mile. We’ll then head all the way down to Holyrood with lots of interesting closes, street performers and the reflections of the pools down at the Scottish Parliament. Something for everyone!

Edinburgh isn’t flat, and we can’t guarantee sunshine so come prepared for walking on uneven roads that could be wet. The walk is around 1.5 miles long so there will be plenty of opportunity for great photographs.

I run Edinburgh Photography Workshop in the city so if you are an absolute beginner – don’t be afraid to come along, I’m happy to pass on some assistance during the walk. If you’re a more advanced photographer then it’s a great opportunity to see the city in a different way.

Edinburgh Old Town Photowalk WinnerOctober 31st, 2018

Just a quick note to say congratulations to Billy Waugh who was selected as the winner of the Edinburgh Old Town photo-walk contest. Well done Billy and also to the rest of the entrants who made my job quite difficult.

SaturdayOctober 3rd, 2018

Hi everyone,

That is the walk for Saturday fully subscribed so there should be 50 of us taking to the streets of the Old Town in Edinburgh.

We are meeting up at 11:45am outside Dance Base on the Grassmarket where we’ll get a group photo in front of the castle before heading along our route. We are going to head along the Grassmarket, up Victoria Street onto Victoria Terrace before heading down the Royal Mile toward Holyrood. There is part of Holyrood 9A reserved for us from 2pm so if you get disconnected from the walk that will be our meeting place.

There is a large march taking place on Saturday which may overlap our route. It could get some great photos that we may not have anticipated when the date was originally set. If we do encounter the march then please stay safe and follow the instructions of the marshalls.

I look forward to seeing you all on Saturday and don’t forget to charge your batteries and have space on your memory cards. I wrote a blog a few weeks ago on my Edinburgh Photography Workshop website about schoolboy (and schoolgirl) errors that could take happen – it could be worth a read!

See you on Saturday!

  • RichDysonPhoto Hi everyone, That's the Edinburgh Photowalk over half-full already with 26 people registered on the walk. It would be great to get more people registered so please feel free to share a link to the walk with your friends. If you are a member of a camera club then let your club know and we can fill the remaining 24 slots. Really looking forward to seeing you all on the 6th October. Rich
