About This Walk
This year’s photowalk offers a rare opportunity to capture history in a truly meaningful way. As 2026 marks both the 250th Anniversary of the United States and the 100th Anniversary of Route 66, we’ll explore one of Chicagoland’s hidden treasures—Lemont, Illinois, a town that proudly sits on the original 1926–1928 alignment of the legendary Mother Road.
Our walk will take us through the Lemont Downtown Historic District, a remarkable 14-block area filled with beautifully preserved buildings dating from the mid-1800s through the early 1900s. Along the way, we’ll discover remnants of Route 66’s golden age.
But this isn’t just a walk through history. Lemont is a town where the past and present meet. Historic limestone buildings stand alongside a vibrant and growing downtown filled with new restaurants, shops, and community spaces. The I&M Canal, passing trains, river views, and bustling streets provide endless opportunities for photography—from architecture and street scenes to storytelling and documentary images.
Whether you’re drawn by history, photography, Route 66 nostalgia, or simply the chance to explore one of the most unique communities in the Chicago region, this year’s walk promises a chance to capture the spirit of America at a milestone moment in its story.
