About This Walk

Boise Downtown Night Photo Walk
Welcome to the Scott Kelby Photo Walk. This is not your everyday Photo Walk; this is a Night Photo Walk through downtown Boise. I am excited for the opportunity to again lead fellow photographers on what I personally consider one of the most interesting local group shoots that you can do, a night shoot in the downtown environment. I participated the first year and started leading them the second year. This is my Ninth Night Kelby Photo Walk as a Leader. I lead a Night Walk every year and my original Night Walk was the very first Night Walk in the World as part of Scott Kelby’s Photo Walk. I was leading Night Walks years before the Kelby Walks started.

We will meet at 7:30pm at the Chicago Connection 310 North 4th Street in Boise (Note this is not Old Chicago, it is the Chicago Connection). This gives us good parking and a starting point. At 7:45PM, we will start out, with a little time for twilight photos, before it gets dark.

I love night photography and do it often, but if this is your first time, there are just things to consider. While you don’t have to have special equipment, I would suggest that you have a tripod and a cable release for your camera. The tripod will help you to do the longer exposures required in low-light without image blur. A cable release is suggested, but you could also use the camera self timer to trip the shutter. Some of our photographers may choose to use flash, but for more exciting images at night, I use a tripod and the lights of the city.

Point & Shoot or DSLR (or film) we don’t care. The goal is to meet new friends, have a fun photo shoot, capture some images we like, and to overall have a great time doing what we love, photography. I and some of the other experienced low-light photographers will be happy to help first time night shooters to get started. If you have questions ahead of the Photo Walk, please contact me via the Kelby Photo Walk web site.

Be sure to dress for the weather, it should be warm/hot and hopefully dry. Even if it rains, I will lead the walk. If it is raining consider an umbrella and/or plastic garbage bags over the cameras. Use rubber bands to secure the bags.

The Photo Walk will officially run from 7:45pm to 10:00pm. We will travel around Downtown Boise, with stops around Downtown Boise, then on to Freak Alley, the Parking Garage, then on through the Grove. We will end up at Solid Grill & Bar 405 South 8th Street in Boise, so you can have a bite of food or a drink, while we chimp images or discuss how much our feet hurt. More details available the night of the walk. Reading the Kelby Photo Walk FAQ’s will provide you with information on the overall process.

Benny Baughman We are still going to do mobile photography correct? Is this separate from the DSLR walk or the same category?

Wink Jones What size lens(es) do you recommend we bring?

Christine Bonner I only have one lens, I'm very new at this I have the 18-55 mm lens is that ok for this type photography

Wink Jones Christine, I have taken many great photos with that lens, including some of downtown Boise at night. I was hoping to get some feedback from the organizer when I asked my question above as I am debating between my 20mm and the 18 - 55 mm. I suspect I will bring both. It will be hotter than heck, so I do not want to carry a backpack, I will probably just wear a pair of shorts that will allow me to put one of the lenses in a pocket. For some of the earlier work, bring your cell phone and be sure to have the LR app on it. You may be amazed at the quality of shots you can get with the newer cell phones.

Paul Pulley Fastest lens you have, si the best lens. Benny: DSLR or Mobile, what every works for you.

Beth O'Meara Fun night. Hope everyone enjoyed it. Is there a way to post a few of the photos we took? Not necessarily for the contest. Would love to see some others took.

Beth O'Meara Christine. How new your are in photography. Would love to get together and go out shooting some time and I can try to answer any questions you might have.

Beth O'Meara How do i tell if my image uploaded? I don't think it did. But not sure

Beth O'Meara argh. And If I try to select just our walk. I cant even find it. I looked through the list and tried typing Boise and Night and get nothing.

Beth O'Meara Never mind. Now I know it worked. I may have been clicking on the video button or something. Restarted the computer Tried again and got confirmation. Sorry to bother and thank you.
