Where We Will Meet

Everglades National Park, Royal Palm Visitor's Center

Where The Walk Will End

Everglades National Park, Royal Palm Visitor's Center

About This Walk

I thought we would try something different than a city walk. Meet us at the Royal Palm Visitor’s Center in the Everglades National Park (Homestead entrance) at 6:45. At 7pm we’ll walk the Anhinga Trail. The trail is a 0.8 mile self-guiding trail that winds through a sawgrass marsh. You may see alligators, turtles, anhingas, herons, egrets, and many other birds. The trail itself consists of asphalt and a boardwalk over the water and is wheelchair accessible. Photography wise, a tripod may be helpful shooting in low-light conditions. If that’s not a concern, a standard DSLR, Mirrorless, or even a cell phone will be fine. We’re here to have fun and see some interesting things!

Sunset is at approximately 8pm, so we’ll be visiting just before sunset, during sunset, and into the blue hour or twilight. At approximately 8:30om, we’ll meet back at the visitors center, then caravan to the Exit One Taproom in Florida City (12 NE 3rd ST #30, Florida City, FL, 33034) where they have indoor and outdoor seating, sell craft beers and cigars, and where several food trucks are available to quell that hunger! We can review our photos there.

Be prepared for weather and bugs. Highly recommended to bring bug spray and/or a mosquito jacket. Also, please abide by the Leave No Trace (https://lnt.org/), and Nature First (https://www.naturefirstphotography.org/) principles when photographing in nature. The Everglades does charge an entrance fee, but at the time we’re arriving, the gate house is unmanned and gates are open; you’ll be free to enter. The Royal Palm Visitor’s center is the first left after you go through the entrance gates. Follow the road until you come to a fork, take the left and travel a short distance to the parking lot and visitor’s center. We will meet there. Restrooms are available at the visitor’s center.

A little bit about me, my name is Barbara Livieri and I’m one of the officers of the South Florida National Parks Camera Club (SFNPCC https://www.sfnpcc.org/). Our club does regular trips to the Everglades, and have visited the park and this trail several times. Please feel free to message me with any questions. Hope to see you all here!

Barbara Livieri Happy Wednesday all. Just letting you all know we have seven of us registered for this walk. I am looking forward to seeing you all. If anyone has any questions, please let me know. See you all Saturday. Barb

Barbara Livieri Hi everyone. Just wanted to let you know what to bring if you are not familiar with the Everglades. I highly suggest you wear light colored long pants and long sleeve shirts, closed toed shoes, and bring bug spray - there WILL be mosquitoes. If you forget, I always carry bug spray in my camera bag. Bring drinking water, and something to keep you dry if you are worried about getting wet. There could be a chance of rain, it is South Florida, so bring an umbrella or rain poncho just to be safe. Of course, bring your camera and maybe a cover for it, just in case. Tripod as well if you have one. We will not let a little rain stop us, but lightning is nothing to sneeze at. If the weather does turn severe, we will not do the walk, but if agreed upon by everyone present, we might travel where we can safely take a sunset photo. But right now, I have no plans for that. It is just an off-chance possibility. We will see you all tomorrow evening at the Royal Palm Visitors Center near the Anhinga Trail
