About This Walk

Briefly the walk consist of three sections: 1. the old town of Ampang 2. the New Village of Ampang and 3. The Nine Emperor Gods temple and the Nine Emperor Gods festival – hence the old, the new and the divine.

This walk will start from the Ampang LRT station, which historically was the train station built and used to transport tin out of Ampang. We then walk through the backwaters of Ampang, passing the old Ampang market and town which is still lined with pre-war shophouses, some of which some are more than 100 years old. The wet market and the main street of old Ampang is still bustling with activity in the morning as old Ampang folks still patronize the traditional wet market and stalls.

We will then go down Jalan Merdeka and into the Ampang New Village, where the new villages once set up by the British to fight communism still stands and the villagers go about in their old ways. Whilst most parts of the village have somewhat been mordernized, there are still a few kampung houses and kampung style shops still operating like they were in the past.

From there we will make our way to the famous Nine Emperor Gods temple of Ampang, and coincidentally this is during the Nine Emperor Gods Festival so the place will be bustling with activity. We will do a quick walkabout the temple grounds and then adjourn to our end point.

More information will be updated so please keep an eye on this page.

Pre-Walk UpdateOctober 3rd, 2024

Just an update:

1. Wear comfortable shoes and clothes. Weather has been unpredictable these few days. It can start off super sunny and hot but quickly the clouds can move in and hence there is a chance of rain as well, so please be prepared.
2. Light, muted coloured clothing is preferred for the Nine Emperor Gods festival (avoid wearing all black, or bright red or orange)
3. The people around the market and new village are not used to being photographed so act accordingly and be courteous.
4. Inside the Nine Emperor Gods temple can be very smoky so wear a mask or limit the exposure time to the smoke inside the temple if it becomes unbearable.
5. The tentative route (line 1 & 2) and other optional paths can be seen in this map:
