About This Walk
Important note: meet at 9:00 CDT Crossville time ( 10:00 EDT Knoxville time for those coming from my area – we are one hour ahead and just over one hour driving time away!) Your phone and GPS will likely switch time zones while driving there.
The 3CT fall event and Kelby’s World-Wide Photowalk are the same day this year. Let’s meet in downtown Crossville at The Depot near the red caboose. These photo walks are great ways to meet other “photographers” – it’s fun to share ideas and tips. You can use anything that takes photos, including cell phones. Everyone is a photographer today – you don’t have to have the latest camera to participate. Tripods and flash units are optional, if you want to lug them around.
Suggestions to bring: water, snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, portable chargers and don’t forget extra batteries and memory cards!
Driving around Crossville, I found interesting building details, cool retail and eatery places, and construction – so watch your step! There is some off-main street parking and parking lots off Main St. – I will post a map with highlights. I plan to be there rain or shine, so bring raincoat, umbrella (also good for too much sun!) and a plastic bag to cover your camera if needed.
My experience is that it’s hard for photographers to all stay together during the whole walk but my goal is for everyone to have at least one other person to walk with. Yes, please bring friends, spouse, kids, along – everyone can be a photographer for a day! You can take a break or grab a snack – and we have lunch plans at noon.
We will re-meet back at the Caboose at 11:15. 3CT is planning on us meeting for a noon lunch at the Homestead Harvest restaurant at Cumberland Mountain State Park – 24 Office Drive, Crossville 38555. It’s about a 15 minute drive from downtown (estimate) so will try to leave by 11:30.
There is also an afternoon photo walk with Ron Durant later at 2:00pm at Cumberland Mountain SP Byrd Lake!
My phone # is 865-466-6168 to call or text. PLEASE email me at annbarber40@gmail.com so I can update you – I will not share your email with anyone (unless you say so – in case you want to keep in touch with other walkers after the event) or send multiple emails. There are shooting tips and area information I’d like to share, although I think I can do that on this page also.
Maps are on this link’s page….October 4th, 2024
I carefully created a map and list of places to see in Crossville but am not able to insert that here. Please go to this link to view them: https://www.facebook.com/events/863201768717344/?active_tab=discussion
Also note the Contest information for the WWPW has been updated above – click on “Contest” for the info.

Here are more details for our walk.
• Remember start time for the downtown Crossville walk is 9:00 am CST – not EST !) We will meet at the caboose on Main Street.
•
• It’s so easy to get excited about making pictures – but SAFETY is the top priority for this event. PLEASE be careful while taking pictures. Watch for traffic and construction, don’t get too close to the edge of the road, be aware of your surroundings. Keep an eye out for other walkers if you can.
• It would be fun to walk around as a big group, but my experience is that people will split off to shoot something else that catches their eyes. This is fine but I would like everyone to have someone to walk around with.
•
• Interesting things to look for are monuments, buildings, great architecture, a great scenic view; these all make great photos. Some things to look for are:
o Framing – look at something through something else
o Reflections
o Shapes to look for – straight or repeating or leading lines, diagonals, triangular, round
o Strong texture, colors, tones
o Light and shadows
o K.I.S.S – simplicity; isolate your subject
o Go fishing: find a great scene and wait for someone to walk through it
o
• It is technically legal to take photos of people outside in public areas, but I usually ask if it’s ok first (if possible) – especially if they are really recognizable. If you plan to post photos online, it’s best if you get a “release” – a sample is attached below. Most contest require a release. Sometimes people even ask me to send them a picture.
•
• There are coffeeshops or stores along the route if you’d like to take a break – sometimes there are good photo opportunities inside too. Just make sure it’s ok with them, and you don’t get in anyone’s way.
•
• There is a lunch planned for noon with the 3CT group at Homestead Harvest Restaurant in Cumberland Mountain State Park. (*note not part of this Photowalk but also there at the Cumberland Mountain State Park is another photo walk at 2:00 around Byrd Lake with Ron Durant as the leader.)
12:00 p.m. Homestead Harvest Restaurant in Cumber land Mountain State Park. Located on scenic Byrd Lake, the Homestead Harvest Restaurant serves a variety of family favorites. Whether stopping in for a cold beverage after a hike or something more substantial. Served buffet style. Saturday lunch includes: Meat loaf, grilled chicken over rice, mashed potatoes, gra vy, broccoli, pinto beans, cornbread, rolls, soup, salad bar and dessert. $18.00 per person.
2:00 p.m. Cumberland Mountain State Park Byrd Lake Photo walk with Cookeville Camera Club’s Ron Durant. https://tnstateparks.com/parks/info/cumberland-mountain
Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow
Here’s a link to our flickr page. You can submit as many photos there as you’d like from the weekend (some stayed the night in Crossville.) The beauty of a flickr page is you can share just a LINK to your photos to Facebook, Instagram, your club pages, and share the link via email… without having to upload your images to each place. Please feel free to tag yourself in your or my photos – so folks know who’s who.

Of course you can post your images on Facebook or Instagram anyway.
DON’T upload your favorite / best image – there should be a “SlickPic” link popping up on this page for the Kelby Worldwide Photowalk photo contest by tomorrow. Submission dates are Oct. 7th – 12th by 11:59pm ET (10:59pm CT !!)
The best image from our group will be forwarded to Scott Kelby’s group to select winners. Someone will win – why not YOU?
Don’t forget the 3CT group has a photo contest going too – details should be on their Facebook page about how/when to submit – we think you get a week. There will be cash prizes for the top three images.
Don’t be shy about submitting one image here or there (could be same or different favorite images) — you never know which picture will catch someone’s eye and win them over.
Let me know if I can help …
