About This Walk
Thank you for signing up to join us in Beautiful Port Washington! Please check back as details are added. Here’s what we have thus far:
Ilene Schuss and Roy Schneider will be your walk leaders. I have been leading photo walks around Long Island since 2013. Roy brings to us his vast experience as a Port Washington resident, passionate Visual Storyteller and 13-time Emmy Award Winning Producer/Editor.
We will gather at Bay Walk Park across from the Stop and Shop Shopping Center. It’s best to park in their lot near the cross walk and traffic signal to get across Shore Road to the park.
Group Photo: 2:45 – 3 pm. Please volunteer to bring a tripod to help take our photo if you can.
Official, timed part of the walk: 3-5 pm. (subject to change the day of, depending on conditions)
Walk Route: (subject to change, based on the weather). We plan to begin at Shore Road Park and travel along the shoreline and possibly Baxter Pond, then head down to the Town Docks at the end of Main Street. In inclement weather, we may shift to their quaint Main Street so people can walk in and out of their quaint shops. You’re welcome to take your photos anywhere in Port Washington or Manorhaven, but always ask permission if photographing inside shops, restaurants and of other people.
You may do a combination of walk/drive to cover more ground. Some may want to travel to the downtown area along Main Street.
Other points of interest:
- 2nd floor of Port Washington Public Library off Main Street for a scenic overlook down to the harbor. (The road by the Library is very steep; plan accordingly.)
- Growing Love Community Garden – enter through the gates in the back of Lady of Fatima Parish Center’s Parking Lot at 42 Manorhaven Blvd. They usually have flowers and produce growing and butterflies and birds flitting about.
By participating in this walk, you agree to hold Ilene Schuss and Roy Schneider harmless from any damage or injury done to yourself or others during the event.
Please respect all traffic and parking rules, take care when walking around. No smoking, vaping or use of any intoxicating substances while with us. People over the age of 21 are welcome, no pets allowed (except service animals).
What to wear/pack: Please wear comfortable walking shoes, dress for the weather, bring water, sunscreen, and travel light to make your time with us more enjoyable. Any kind of camera may be used, including cellphones and all skills of photography are welcome!
After the walk: we may choose to dine at a local restaurant, separate checks. That will be discussed at the walk.
The Photo Contest: Scott Kelby offers a free, optional photo contest for prizes! Even if you don’t plan to participate in that, you are still welcome to join us.
Note – Late comers are still welcome but will miss our group photo and must still adhere to the official photo-taking time for the Scott Kelby free photo contest.
There is a large LIRR station at Main Street & Haven Ave for those coming by public transportation. We suggest taking a cab or uber to get to our starting point.
Events happening in Port Washington during the time of our walk – you’re welcome to go to these for photo taking, too:
- Exotic and Classic Car Show by the LIRR train station 10-am – 3 pm
- Annual Town of North Hempstead Fall Festival / Pumpkin Festival: starts at 4:00 PM, North Hempstead Beach Park, 175 West Shore Road, Port Washington – you’ll need to drive there as it’s far from where we’ll be walking; free admission
