Photo Walk Description

Zurich at Twilight

The plan for this walk is to meander around some of the well known sights of Zurich city centre looking for that interesting angle that we might not normally spot. As the weekend draws to a close hopefully this will be a relatively quiet time on the streets. Precise start location and gathering point afterwards still to be confirmed, but we’re staying central to make it as accessible as possible.

  • Thank-you!

Thank-you to everyone who came to the walk this evening, we had 27 people starting out and I think nearly everyone made it to the end! We cut short the route due to to the time, but I have uploaded a map to the Flickr group so you can check it out if you want to see where else I would have taken you:

The streets we missed were my favourite narrow alleyways in the old town, so perhaps would not have been so great with a group of over 20, but they are fascinating if you are pottering around there on your own sometimes.

It was great to meet such a nice group of people, and thank-you for your help looking after my daughter. I have uploaded some of my photos to the Flickr group and look forward to seeing all of yours:

  • Taking photos!

This walk is a twilight walk, and as many people do not usually take photos at this time of day I though you might find this article useful reading:
    http://www.digital-photography-school.com/beyond-sunset-the-differen-phases-of-twilight

You don’t need to take sunset or wide angle scenery shots, or have a fancy camera or tripod (though feel free to bring them along if you do, I will also have a few small pocket tripods). The changing light will provide some interesting colours and shadows, and perhaps force you to look for more close-up or detail shots than you might normally.

After the walk, we can all compare notes and pictures in Starbucks, then if you wish you can upload some of your favourite shots to the official Flickr group for the worldwide photo walk: http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpw4/

There is also the opportunity to submit your best shot to Scott Kelby’s competition, see here for prize details: http://worldwidephotowalk.com/prizes/

Also if you receive Ron Orp’s Mail you will know that there is always a photo of Zurich shown prominently in the newsletter:
“Whether it is landscapes, buildings, streets, signs or people the photos all give a personal view of our city, by one of our readers. So whether you are a professional or amateur, artist or snapper send in your photos of Zurich”

  • Meeting point & bad weather plans

The starting point for the photo walk will be at Bellevue tram station, this is nice and central and should make it easy for transport links. There is a large fountain in the centre which will serve as the meeting point. Here is a picture of it:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/60673622@N05/6143635310/in/pool-1709035@N24/

I will be waiting there from around 5:45pm and we will leave promptly at 6pm. I will distribute my mobile phone number to all registered walkers in the days before the walk for use if you are running late. I hope to be wearing a white and red ‘Photo Walk Leader’ t-shirt (if it arrives in time from the US!) and will have a baby strapped to my back and a camera around my neck.

If the weather is truly appalling, we may have to abandon the walk, or change the time to a maximum of 1 hour earlier. I will be monitoring the weather forecast and if it really looks doomed I will email all registered participants directly the day before with the alternative plan. Whatever the weather, I will be at Bellevue at the start (6pm as well as any revised start time in case the message is not received by all) and will bring maps and directions in case some people want to go ahead and walk and others want to curtail it and go to Starbucks earlier.

  • Post walk venue

We will go to the Starbucks at Limmatquai 4 (near Bellevue tram stop) for the post-walk gathering (drinks/snacks/share photos/chat etc!). The manager will be saving an area for us from 7:30pm and it is open until 11pm. I’ll need to give her approximate numbers a couple of days in advance so if you find you cannot come please unsubscribe from the attendee list, and if you know you won’t come along afterwards please drop me a note to let me know. Since it’s an informal venue though it should not matter if a few people are undecided!

Isn’t 6pm a bit late in terms of light ?

  2. Rachel Whittaker says:

    Hi Charles

Civil twilight on October 2nd is at 7:30pm, when I plan for the ‘formal’ part of the walk to end. Changing light should make for some interesting photographs, and you may even wish to stay out later and take some night time shots.

I hope that at this time on a Sunday evening the streets of central Zurich will be relatively quiet so a large group can wander safely without getting in the way of other pedestrians.

I will be on a business trip but not working during this weekend. I will be in the Hilton Hotel near the airport for the week, should I get a taxi or is there public transportation to the place that the walk will start?

    • Mark Imhof says:

HI Ellis, You can take a train from the Airport to the Zürich Mainstation and walk or take a tram to the Event start.
As far as I know the hotel has a shutle to the Airport and thay can give you the Infos on when they leave.

    • Rachel Whittaker says:

      Hi Ellis
You can take the S7 train from Kloten Balsburg station to Stadelhofen station, which is very close to the walk start.

would love to go , but is too late (6 to 730pm)for the ones that are going from other towns…Good luck!!!

    • Rachel Whittaker says:

Sorry you can’t join us, perhaps next year you could host one in your area at a day/time that suits you – see the WWPW page for details.

  5. Daniel Salazar says:

hi, I would also like to go, however on so late Sunday is difficult for the ones that come far away from Zürich, enjoy it!

  6. Hi Rachel,
I have only just noticed this project this morning and would like to come along. I have a visitor in town over the weekend so I am not yet sure of my plans and I know that I will be in a hurry to get away afterwards. Would it be rude of me to turn up for the walk (if possible) and then skip off straight away at 19.30?
    thanks,
    David

  7. James Wang says:

I thought I post before but I don’t see my previous comment. Would love to come and join the walk today. Looking forward to meeting everyone later.

  8. Mark Imhof says:

    Good Morning Rachel,
Thanks for Organizing the Photo Walk, I had a good time.
Too bad we didn’t get around to finishing the round, I was surprised how fast time went by.

    Regards
    Mark
