Photo Walk Description

Hello and Welcome to Worldwide Photo Walk 2011 at Historic Old Town Winchester, Virginia! I am Art, your Photo Walk Leader. I am a 30-year seasoned photographer in all genres and with a specialty in historical photography. I look forward to meeting you and sharing! You make keep up with all of our updates and news via our Blog and Twitter as well:

A little bit of history:

Old Town Winchester is located within the heart of a 45-block National Register Historic District. It is photographer’s delight filled with rich history, wonderful architecture, quaint places, famous homes, art and more. We will begin at the Old Courthouse which is now the Civil War Museum and continue on the Loudoun Street Pedestrian Mall, City Hall, The Rouss Fire Company, George Washington’s Office Museum and other must-see, must photograph places. The Loudoun Street Pedestrian Mall also offers “a charming atmosphere” with strolling musicians, outdoor restaurants, carriage rides, quaint shops, beautiful historic churches and buildings. After the walk we will meet up at the Daily Grind Coffee Shop to review our photos.

If you are a pro photographer, amateur, newbie, own a SLR, DSLR, P&S, phone camera or whatever gear you have, we would love to have you walk with us. It’s free, fun and you have the opportunity to win prizes, meet other photographers, make new friends and enjoy a beautiful day of shooting a great historical town. We look forward to meeting you!

Your safety is important so a few tips: Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes as the Pedestrian Mall has areas of cobblestone; bring bottled water and a light jacket as the weather cools in the evening; bring your sunscreen!; parking is available on street and in three parking garages close by; please keep in mind if you bring tripod/monopod that weekends are very busy on the Pedestrian Mall with walkers, diners, family groups and constant activity.

See you October 1! RAIN OR SHINE!

  • It's Here! Worldwide Photo Walk Day

Hello Photo Walkers: Rain or Shine!! Today is the day and we are looking forward to photographing this wonderful Old Town with all of its offerings. It’s a rainy day which can be outstanding for photography especially capturing reflections, people, umbrellas in motion, storefront windows, lights and streets, stormy skies and the wet reflections on those historic buildings. As lovers of photography, we never let rain, sleet, snow or weather hold us back as this is when some of those beloved and unique shots are captured. So friends, be prepared, wear clothes that you will be comfortable in, perhaps a hoodie/windbreaker and if preferred, bring along your umbrella. If you have large camera/gear and no “raincoat” bring along plastic bags just in case you need to cover a long lens. Old Town Pedestrian Mall has many cover places for “ducking” into if we have a deluge. As Peter Lik said as he climbed an icy mountain, “I’ve got to get the SHOT” so we will! There are prizes to be had, opportunity for sharing your images, learning more about our craft, sharing with new people and more. We look forward to meeting up with all of you. See you in front of the Old Court House Civil War Museum at 4:30 p.m. today.

  • Welcome to our Winchester Photo Walkers

Hello Photo Walkers: We are excited to meet you and share in the Scott Kelby Worldwide Photowalk 2011 on October 1! It is going to be a great photowalk with excellent photographers, a fun time and the beautiful historic Old Town Winchester to photograph. In addition to our signed-up walkers, there will be additional photographers at the walk to assist and help. We are also looking forward to the Winchester-Frederick County Visitor Bureau and Center’s participation as well. If you have questions, need assistance, or need confirmation that you are on the list, please contact me at the link here at the sign-up page and I will get back to you. We know that some folks had a problem signing up on the WWPW main page because of the bounty of photographers signing up worldwide. Remember that updates are available on our blog and Twitter (@WinchesterPhoto). Have a great week and see you on Saturday, October 1!

  1. Sheila Chapman says:

    Hello,

I believe there is a chance for rain on walk day, (which can make for great/interesting photography) but do you still hold the walk even it does rain?

If so, any suggestions how to keep cameras dry?

    Thanks!
    Sheila

  2. Art says:

Yes, the walk is rain or shine; Winchester very seldom has rain at 30-50% and if it does, very little and not a problem in Old Town Predestrian Mall as there are ample places for cover. The walking mall has buildings on both sides with protection from wind and storms so it should not be a problem. The predicted weather for rain is about two hours prior to the walk and YES, after rain is a great time to photograph as it makes beautiful reflections from buildings, glass and the stormy skies bring more detail into images. The mall is shaded, with trees and canopies for cover. If one feels the need, they can bring an umbrella or wear hoodie/windbreaker. A camera bag should be sufficient for large gear in the event needed. Depending upon your gear and if you do not have a “raincoat” for gear or large lens camera, bring along a zip lock or small plastic bag. For smaller pocket/purse cameras, you should be fine to tuck away on your person.

  3. Ronnie says:

Is there a fee? Do I need to sign up to come on the walk or just show up?

  4. Art says:

Ronnie, the Worldwide Photowalk is free but you must be signed up to enter the contest for prizes.

  5. Art says:
