About This Walk

Come enjoy San Diego’s first wilderness preserve, opened in 1973!  The park boasts of approximately 3 miles of various hiking trails, all easy to moderate, a pond, various woodland and chaparral vegetation, historical architecture and a mill from 1881, numerous species of birds and wildlife, and beautiful views.  Please bring $3 for the parking fee per vehicle, and at least 2 liters of drinking water, and review the weather report a few days prior.  Dress accordingly.  The trails are dirt and high heels or open-toed shows may not be the best option.  Dogs, drones, smoking (including e-cigs/vapes), and littering are not permitted at the Wilderness Gardens Preserve.  Afterward, anyone who is interested can join us at Pala Casino’s restaurant, Luis Rey’s, for drinks, food, and camaraderie.

More details on our location and WalkSeptember 10th, 2017

Went out to the Wilderness Gardens Preserve on a little scouting expedition yesterday. Learned a few things:
1) Don’t forget (like I did), that there’s a $3 per vehicle parking fee. Exact cash or check only. If you need it, there’s an ATM at the gas station near Pala Casino.
2) The restrooms are port-o-potties. There are two at the parking lot, and a few scattered along the trails of the Preserve.
3) Dogs are allowed, but must remain on a leash and are the responsibility of their owner.
4) The first Saturday of the month (yes, that’s our day) has an interpretive talk at 10am…we may have company!
5) Please arrive a little early so you have time to find parking, complete the parking slip and pay the $3 fee, return the Proof of Payment tab to your dashboard, grab your gear, and meet near the restrooms. Our Walk will begin promptly at 10am.
6) Be aware that there is poison oak…a lot of it. You don’t really want to go traipsing through the foliage to get that perfect shot without being aware of what it looks like and if it’s nearby.
7) Please remember to bring water, appropriate shoes, a hat, and sunscreen.

We will meet at the port-o-potties near the parking lot and walk in. The trail will take us around the pond, passed the Ranger station and old mill, and back to the parking lot. Most of it is flat, packed dirt. The main road, which we will walk in on, has a few easy ups and downs, but nothing too steep. We will avoid the Upper Meadow Trail, as it is rated moderate in difficulty and not everyone may be able to ascend; however, we will walk the flat portion of the Upper Meadow Trail back to the parking lot. The total planned walk is about 2.0 miles.

If we have time, and everyone is interested, we can also walk the Alice Fries loop trail on our way back to the parking lot. The beginning of this trail has some rocks that need to be maneuvered around, but then smooths out. It’s a flat .4 mile loop.

After the walk, anyone who would like to join me at Luis Reys restaurant at Pala Casino for some lunch and libations are more than welcome!

If you are on Facebook, we’ve created an event page so we can interact with each other, ask questions before the event, etc. Feel free to join: https://www.facebook.com/events/1433918073367184/

  • PricklyPear Good morning, fellow PhotoWalkers!! For those of you who may not know, we have a Facebook event, too. You've already registered here, which is fantastic and I can't wait to walk with you all! But the Facebook page may be a fun way to get to know each other before the big walk. If you're interested, here's the link https://www.facebook.com/events/1433918073367184/

  • PricklyPear Good morning! Don't forget that I will be choosing the winner of our Photowalk on October 15th. Please be sure to submit your one favorite photo before that date! :) Let me know if you have any questions. And thank you all for a fun day! I truly enjoyed it and meeting all of you.

  • PricklyPear I’ve had the difficult task of selecting a winner from our local 2017 Worldwide Photowalk…each submission was beautifully composed and framed; each had its own appeal and draw. What an incredible treat it was to walk the grounds with these photographers, getting to know each of them, sharing stories and memories, and now I had the privilege to view the world through their eyes. But..with that came the burden of selecting a winner. It was not an easy choice. But the choice has been made! Thanks to each of you who joined me that Saturday. I look forward to future treks. May we cross paths again.

  • David Carlson I'm so excited that I had the lucky image that won the contest! I had a blast on the walk and can't wait for next year:) Thanks again for leading the way!!
