Photo Walk Description

Our walk will take us through the central campus of the United States Military Academy. USMA is home to many historic sites, buildings and monuments; the entire area is a national landmark and will provide many wonderful photo opportunities. Please come prepared to walk, learn something about West Point and photography and most of all to meet new people and have fun.

Photography, travel and learning are three of my favorite things. These passions all seem to intersect at West Point, so it is the perfect place to conduct my first Photo Walk! I spend my days inspiring students to study STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) as the Director of Outreach for the Center for STEM Education at West Point. For many years I have also worked Part-time as a professional photographer. I am excited to connect these passions and share what I know about West Point and even a few things about photography.

At the conclusion of our walk will will meet in the Thayer Hotel for a bite to eat and to share stories.

    Hi Cathy,
Can you see if my name is up on the list- when I tried to “join” the walk and I put that mixed up word at the end of the process- it was saying my username already exists, my e-mail already exists….yada, yada- I want to make sure I’m on the list and gotta enter Joe’s info next sorry….don’t know why it’s giving me a problem!

    Hi Cathy,
Well it was quite a process to register because I kept getting my username and password wrong. But I think I made it to the right place and am really looking forward to the walk!

    Woo Hoo!!!

  4. Catherine Bale says:

It seems that there are some bugs in the sign-up process! The good news is that you are all registered and ready to roll! Can’t wait!

  5. Dan Horton says:

I’m looking forward to this photo walk. Thank you for organizing this location.

  6. Michael Dunckley says:

The walk starts at 3:15 PM. How much extra time should I allow for security checks?

    • Catherine Bale says:

      Hi Michael,

Allow about 5-10 minutes to go through West Point Security.

MAKE SURE you have a photo ID!

Tell the guard you are participating in the Photo Walk and meeting your
group in the Thayer Hotel parking lot!

      Should be pretty easy!

      See you Sunday!

  7. Catherine Bale says:

    All,

I am super excited about our Photo Walk on Sunday and I am hoping for an improved weather forecast! Right now it looks like we have a chance of showers. (If anyone has connections in that area, feel free to intervene!)

    Details:

    1. If the weather is horrible, then we won’t walk and I will post a cancellation notice here by 2pm. However, if the weather is marginal, meaning light showers, then we will go ahead with the walk! The temperature can seem a bit cooler at West Point because of the “river” effect. Make sure you bring a jacket and a bottle of water.

    2. Please try to be here and ready to walk at 3pm. Enter the Academy through the Thayer Gate, which is the one you access through the town of Highland Falls. YOU MUST HAVE ID to gain access to West Point. Tell the security guard you are taking part in the Photo Walk and have a West Point guide. We will meet in the Parking lot directly across from The Thayer Hotel! Your cars might be searched by security, but most likely they will only ask to look in your trunk and where you are going. Going through security takes only about 5-10 minutes.

    3. If you have any questions let me know! I am looking forward to meeting everyone!

    Cathy

  8. Catherine Bale says:

Today is the DAY! I have decided we will walk rain or shine! If the rain is torrential, then we will eat and talk at the Tavern! See you all at 315!

    Photo Walkers-

Thanks for making our walk such a wonderful experience! It was so great meeting everyone and spending the afternoon taking photos! The weather and company were both perfect!

Please upload your favorite photo here! Upload additional photos you would like to share with the group at http://www.flickr.com/photos/westpointphotowalk/.

Can’t wait to see everyone’s images!

Thanks again for coming and for a great afternoon!

  13. Catherine,
The walk was fabulous! So much fun! What a gorgeous day and a spectacular setting. Thank you for making it possible. Wish I had stayed for dinner with you guys but I got some nice shots on the top of Storm King on the way home and didn’t have to drive that road in the dark.

Now to figure out how to upload a photo here (?). Thanks again for making it happen!
    Chris
