Photo Walk Description

The walk will wander through the historic crooks and crannies of Georgetown, eventually wandering to the Exorcists stairs, then down to towards the water to shoot as we make it to Tony and Joe’s on the Georgetown Waterfront (http://www.tonyandjoes.com/index.php/gallery) where we can order food and beverages, enjoy the beautiful weather and talk about the walk, socialize, and start Sunday Funday.

    Hello Everyone!

Let me begin by saying thank you to everyone that made it out yesterday for the photo walk and I hope that you had a great time.

There are a few things I’d like to tell you about real quick.

The first is the contest, please go to http://worldwidephotowalk.com/ before noon EDT this Friday, 07 October, and submit what you feel is your best picture from the walk to be eligible to win the prizes listed here, http://worldwidephotowalk.com/prizes/.

How to upload for the contest:

First, log in at http://WorldwidePhotoWalk.com, then go to our walk page. There you’ll see instructions in a big yellow box on how to submit your single best image from your walk to the contest. Remember, you will have until Friday, October 7 at 12:00 noon EDT to upload your best image to the contest and images should be a maximum file size of 1MB. And it is suggest to be 1000px on the longest side at 72dpi.

Flickr: I have setup a Flickr group for our walk and that can be found here, http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpw4-georgetowndc/, please feel free to upload your best images, have discussions and use it as a means to stay in touch with one another.

Also, please share photos from our walk on the Official Worldwide Photo Walk Flickr Group at http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpw4/ . Photos from events all around the world will be shared here so the entire community can see the global event they were part of. These photos are not part of the competition, but a great way for everyone to share their experience with the rest of the world.

Lastly, a little background on the route I chose and what I was hoping you would get from it. Before laying out the route, I took some time to think about what would be great for people to get out of it; and I came derived the following list: exploration, working with what you’ve got, depth of field, close-ups, creativity, getting high and low, using lines of sight, landscapes and movement.

Now I could have printed off a checklist and said, here are some things that you should go after and look for, or I could devise a route that would lead you to get those kind of shots as you went along.

I felt that the exploration was a good way to begin and that the Mt. Zion Cemetery (http://www.nps.gov/nr/travel/wash/dc10.htm) offered a wide-open area with a lot of treasures to be found, but you had to look around for them first and then figure out how to photograph it when you found it.

From there we walked along the parameter of Oak Hill where in one part we had to kind of work with what we had and shoot through the fence and try to tell a story within the image because we were restricted by the iron fence.

At the old school house we got to work with shutter speed, f-stops and depth of field on the berries and also get creative on the old chimney and monkey bars.

The old trolley tracks on O Street forced us to get high or low to get all of them in the picture and pull our subjects down the tracks and this also carried over to the canal as we worked towards the river.

Once at the river everything opened up and we had great emotional clouds in the air, the Key Bridge, Georgetown behind us and the Kennedy Center along the Potomac River. This allowed us to setup a landscape shot and focus on what we wanted to be the point of focus for everyone to see when he or she looks at our images.

Lastly, we came to the new water fountain, which made us focus our attention on the movement of the water. Did we want the water to flow or stand frozen, what was the angle that we wanted to capture it at and did we want the water to be the subject or the background to the flower boxes surrounding the fountains.

My hope is that you were able to incorporate some of these objectives throughout the walk and that you had a great time.

Again, thank you for joining me and I look forward to looking at all of your images on the Flickr group and the ones that you submit for the contest.

    Cheers,
    Tim

  • Last Minute Details for Sunday's Walk

    Hello everyone,

I just wanted to send off a quick note about our PhotoWalk on Sunday Morning in Georgetown at 10am.

There have been a few questions come through on what to bring, where to park, the route, etc and I will try to address all of those now.

Meeting Location: Corner of O St and 26th St NW by the playground/basketball court. (http://g.co/maps/t3q49)

    Maps Here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/36694804/2011-GeorgetownPhotoWalk.pdf

Parking in the neighborhood is encouraged and I chose Sunday for the walk since there won’t be any meter or parking enforcement in the area.

Distance from the end location is roughly 1/2 mile to the start and it is an easy walk through Georgetown.

Route will be off pavement at times, so I advise sneakers over flip-flops.

Route will be marked with chalk, however I will have maps with me on Sunday.

Weather is suppose to be great, however you might want to bring water and/or sunblock.

Flickr Account: At the end of the walk, be sure to upload your images to the WorldWide Photowalk page to win prizes and make sure one of your keywords is “GeorgetownDC” so that we can all view each others work. The link is: http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpw4

Lastly, equipment, obviously a camera would be great and in the past I have seen people bring tripods, small flashes, and many other things and gizmos that I never knew existed…. so feel free to bring whatever you want.

On Sunday I will be wearing my baseball hat, probably backwards.

Again, I hope that I have answered all of your questions, however please email me with any that I haven’t addressed.

Lastly, we have a spot open for another person if you know anyone that wants to sign up.

    See ya Sunday,
    Tim

  • Less than a week away

    Hello everyone!

I just wanted to say that it is hard to believe that just a few days from now we will all be meeting at Rose Park in Georgetown and heading out to cover the area.

I have done some scouting of Sunday’s route, however I am always up for suggestions and ideas, so if there is anything that you want to see or do, please email me and let me know at Tim@TDLphoto.com.

Needless, but important to mention, I will do my best to answer all your questions during the walk, whether its suggestions on how to setup a particular shot, thoughts / opinions on equipment or just everyday photography questions.

Lastly, if the weather ends up being as nice as it is supposed to be, we might be moving our after-walk gathering around the corner from Chadwicks and down to the Georgetown Waterfront at Tony & Joe’s, however I will update you with that closer to Sunday.

Again, I can’t wait till Sunday and look forward to meeting everyone.

    Cheers,
    Tim

  • One week in and over half the walk is filled

    Hello everyone,

First let me say thank you for choosing to be apart of the 4th Annual Scott Kelby Worldwide Photo Walk that I am leading through Georgetown on Sunday, October 2nd.

Needless to say I am excited to meet all of you and over the course of the next few weeks I will be setting-up a Flickr site that will allow all of us a forum to upload our pictures to and also have general discussions about the walk, what you hope and want to get out of it, and thoughts general thoughts around photography.

Again, I am looking forward to October 2nd and please feel free to reach out and contact me with any questions and comments before then.

I hope that this finds everyone well.

    Cheers,
    Tim

      Hi Lynn,

Sorry we missed you. We arrived at Tony & Joe’s around 1pm but instead were right next to it at Nick’s, however due to the cold weather, everyone dispersed shortly thereafter around 1:45 and headed to warmer grounds.

I hope that you had fun though and thank you for coming out to the walk.

      Cheers,
      Tim
