About This Walk

We will spend the afternoon in Toronto’s Chinatown and Kensington Market, taking photos of the vibrant and lively people, places and urban environment.

Our walk will start on Spadina at the Darkhorse Cafe, we’ll walk north up Spadina to College, then return south on Spadina and make our way to Kensington Market. It will be right in the afternoon, and sure to be buzzing with activity.

Any level of photographer is welcome, and you can bring whatever camera you wish for the walk (iPhone, DSLR, film (!), whatever).

I am a passionate street photographer who loves to capture authentic human moments, urban architecture, and life in our incredible city.

I am pleased to participate in this event, as this photo walk also supports an important cause. The hope is that we raise money to support The Worldwide Photo Walk supports The Springs Of Hope Kenya Orphanage, an organization that feeds, houses, educates and empowers young orphans. Although registration is free, please consider kindly donating to the amazing cause by following the “Donate” link on this website.

Our walk will end at El Ray bar in Kensington at around 4:30 PM, at which point we’ll have the opportunity to grab a drink, share our photos, and talk photography.

Please note that everyone must cover their own food and drinks.

P.S. Don’t forget to enter your photograph to the contest for a chance to win prizes, which have been generously donated by the event sponsors!

UodateOctober 6th, 2023

Hi everyone,
One change to the program tomorrow: we will be concluding our walk at The Last Temptation instead of El Ray. It’s just a couple of doors north of El Ray.

See you all tomorrow at 2 PM at Dark Horse Cafe on Spadina. A few notes for tomorrow:
The weather looks like it won’t be all that bad. Keeping my fingers crossed that rain won’t be too bad.
Make sure to wear comfortable shoes as we will be walking for some time.
Bring water to stay hydrated.
There will be a lot of opportunities to grab snacks and treats along the way, it’s one of the benefits of walking around Chinatown and Kensington Market.

If you have any questions please reach out!

Tomorrow I will be wearing a New York Yankees cap (don’t hold it against me), and I’ll be standing outside Dark Horse Cafe at 2.

See you all tomorrow!

October 3 – UpdateOctober 3rd, 2023

Hi everyone!
Thank you all for registering for the walk on Saturday. It’s looking like the temperature will be dropping a bit, but fingers crossed that it won’t be raining heavily. In any case, the walk will be on rain or shine, so I hope to see you there.

A few things I’d like to say as we’re a few days out now.

1. Agenda
2 PM – We’ll start with quick introductions and give everyone an opportunity to ask any questions
2:15 PM – We’ll head north on Spadina until we get to College Street. Then we’ll head back down south to Nassau Street.
3:00 PM – We’ll explore Kensington Market. We will have an hour and a half in this neighbourhood.
4:30 PM – We’ll end the walk at El Ray. I am hoping we can all chat and reflect on the walk, show one another or photos and hang out at the bar for a while.

2. Guidelines
Everyone is encourage to enjoy the walk in whichever way they feel most comfortable.
This is a walk that I do quite frequently, and I will be happy to talk about street photography, or what I love about the neighbourhood (and Toronto in general!). Don’t be shy, ask me questions!
It’s fine if you want to walk together the entire time as a group. It’s also perfectly fine if you prefer to drift off and only stay loosely connected.
The point is to have fun and enjoy the day with other photographers for a good cause.
If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations in advance of Saturday, please post them here. I would love to hear them.

3. Donation
If you are able to donate, please do so. At the end of the day, this Worldwide Photo Walk has been created to support a very worthwhile cause, and your contribution will go along way to help.
Thank you in advance if you are able to do this. The link to donate is on the website.

4. Contest!
There is a fun photo contest that is part of the walk (in case you didn’t know about it already).
You do not have to enter, but if you do, there are some great prizes to be won from our sponsors.
Here is the FAQ for the contest:
In order for all walkers to have the same opportunities to capture images during the walk, the following rules must be followed:
You may only submit one photo
Collages aren’t allowed, as they are technically more than one photo. But, the following editing is allowed (but not required):
Contrast & saturation adjustments.
Color to B&W transitions.
Removal of distracting elements.
Creation of HDR & Panoramas.
Infrared
Use of Plug-ins such as ON1, Boris FX, etc.
Adding watermarks.
Photos must be taken during the walk (not before or after)

Look forward to meeting you all. See you Saturday at 2!

  1. Hello!
Wanted to share a few notes in advance of our walk.
This will be a street photography walk, and for those of you who may be new to this genre, here are some suggested things/subjects to consider shooting:
    -street/environmental portraits
    -candid and spontaneous moments
    -urban architecture
    -store fronts/signage
    -interesting cars

On our walk, I encourage you to simply look for and capture what interest you. The beauty of street photography is that it is not staged or “perfect”. It’s more about observing the world around us.
    Look for;
    -patterns
    -interplay of light and shadow
    -interesting subjects
-juxtaposition (two or more things that contrast each other)
    -interesting shapes and textures

I primarily shoot candid street photography, and you can see some of my work on instagram (@chroma).
Feel feee to ask any questions, would be happy to talk about any aspect of it!

Note: I am not a professional photographer, just am enthusiast. But I am a student of the genre and love talking about, so feel free to ask questions if you have them.

See you on the the 7th!

  2. I’ve never been on a group walk before as I’m usually just out solo when I do street or architecture but kinda interested in giving one a shot to possibly meet other photographers and see there techniques.
I’m wondering how big are these walks usually as in avrg number of people?
Are these walks just quick hip shooting or fine art street where you find a perfect scene and just wait for that 1 person or persons to complete your frame?

  3. Hi Rauaire. Thank you for your question.
So far, we have 15 participants registered. I am anticipating that there will be a variety of approaches and levels of experience withing the group.
I encourage everyone to enjoy the walk at their own pace, and in a way in which they will be most comfortable.
Personally, I always shoot solo in the street, and I am looking forward to meeting others who are passionate about photography.
I would love to see what techniques you employ, and we can chat about street photography.
Hope that you register and join us!
