Where The Walk Will End

Optional- meet atThe Fox, 35 Bay St, Toronto, ON M5J 3B2

About This Walk

All levels of photography skills and equipment are welcome on this walk!  We are meeting at the Jack Layton statue (of a man on a tandem bicycle), just before the ferry terminal entrance, at 2 PM. We then will take the Toronto ferry* (see fare and schedule below) to Hanlan’s point at 2:15 PM SHARP (the Hanlan’s ferry only runs on the hour!), where we will walk 15 minutes to photograph the historic Gibraltar Point lighthouse. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibraltar_Point_Lighthouse)

Depending upon the weather and the size/physical abilities of the group, we will then proceed from Hanlan’s Point to Ward’s Island, either on foot (4.8 KM = approx. 1 hour) or again from the mainland ferry docks. Once on Wards, we will photograph the unique houses on Wards and Algonquin Islands, the nature and the boardwalk.

You can bring any food or beverages you wish to consume, and please wear warm clothing, rain gear and sturdy shoes! You may wish to bring a tripod for the sunset, which will end our walk. The Islands offers a spectacular view of the city skyline! The Rectory Cafe on Wards is open until 7 PM, where we can go for a much needed break at around 5 PM for food and drinks and to warm up before the sunset!

I am a professional photographer, with an MFA in photography from York U. and teach Photojournalism at College La Cite in Toronto. Je suis bilingue.  I have conducted 2 previous Kelby walks- including one to Ward’s Island in 2015. That was a rainy day, so we shall hope for sunny weather this year! Our group photos of the Island are here-

Submitting your photo, and other info- please read!October 11th, 2017

I submitted my photo to Kelby but didn’t receive a confirmation, so I asked why. I turns out, my file was too large and I need to reduce it. Here is their response-

Your photo was not received. Please make sure the photo is not larger than 5MB and resubmit.

The Leaders and the individual walk winners receive Scott Kelby’s Photoshop CC for Digital Photographers ebook.

The problem with changing the size of the group is there are a lot of walks that fill up completely with 50 participants and some even have long waitlists. I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think we can program a smaller number for just one walk, but I will certainly check with the Web Team.

Post Walk Message!October 8th, 2017

Thank-you to everyone who participated, and I hope you all enjoyed it! I will be sending reminders when you have to submit your photo to the Kelby competition. Meanwhile, please post your images to our unofficial Kelby Flickr group (not for the contest, but to share your photos with others!) I will post our group photos there today! https://www.flickr.com/groups/kelbyto2017/ I need your Flickr name or email to send you an invite as it is a closed group in terms of membership. Hemal, Shane, Deric, Michael and I are already members and Miranda has been sent her invite! There were 10 of us in total (including myself and 2 not officially inscribed) and 6 no-shows. As the 6 never informed us that they weren’t coming, we don’t know if they arrived late for the ferry or were put off by the rainy morning. It turned out to be a lovely, sunny day and thanks to Warren Hoselton, Parks Supervisor at City of Toronto, and Adam, we were able to gain entry to the Gibraltor Point lighthouse, which is rarely open to the public, and also got a lift afterwards to continue shooting on Ward’s- again THANK-YOU!

NEW Flickr Site for our group!October 6th, 2017

In addition to the Kelby worldwide Flickr group, open to everyone in the world who participates, I’ve set up a group specifically for our group, where you can post unlimited photos and videos from our day to share with each other. Other people can also see the photos, but can’t submit. These photos won’t be part of the competition- that is a separate submission to the Kelby site! Our site is : https://www.flickr.com/groups/kelbyto2017/ If you are already a member of Flickr, send me your Flickr name so I can invite you to join, or an email address! Send it to my email address- dawnone@hotmail.com Thanks! Dawn (“DawnOne” on Flickr)

Gibraltar Point Lighthouse on Ward’s Island- an interesting history!October 5th, 2017

Built in 1808, it is the oldest existing lighthouse on the Great Lakes, and one of Toronto’s oldest buildings! It is generally closed to the public, but if all goes as planned, I have arranged for us to gain entry, which is really exciting! Some believe it to be haunted. The history of the lighthouse can be found here-

The true story of Toronto’s island ghost

Rain or shine on Saturday!October 4th, 2017

The walk will be on, regardless of the weather, but if for some reason you can’t make it, please let me know in advance. We have to make the 2:15 pm Hanlan’s point ferry as they only run each hour. My cell phone number is 4168776178 and you can text me. Please be aware that once on the island, cell service is sporadic, especially with Freedom (which I have…) Again, bring rain gear, wear long pants and consider insect repellant (containing deet) spray as there have been reports of lyme disease carrying ticks in the area this summer. I think the tick season should be over but consider taking precautions, and please don’t walk in heavy undergrowth on the Islands.

Changed time of meet and departure! Now 2 PM!! Please Note!September 11th, 2017

The fall ferry schedule was just published and the boat to Hanlan’s Point leaves on the hour, at 2:15 PM! Therefore we must meet at 2 PM sharp, buy our tickets and head straight to the ferry! I suggest buying them online in advance, but Oct. is never too busy in terms of line-ups. I am working on a special arrangement regarding the lighthouse- more on this later if it materializes!!

Link to my Toronto Islands Photos!August 24th, 2017

These photos will give you an idea of what to expect on the Toronto Islands walk! If we do go to Centre, most of the rides at Centreville an the farm are closed due to the flooding this summer, but could nevertheless provide interesting photo subjects. I’m going to check it out this week and post an update if it is feasible. This is a set of photos I’ve taken over the years on the Toronto Islands! The flooding is over but may still provide some interesting images! Wear appropriate clothing on our walk! https://www.flickr.com/pho…/dawnone/albums/72157594256482080
