Photo Walk Description

This will be part of a regular Toronto Photo Walks event – we meet every other Saturday to explore different parts of Toronto. Hopefully you’ll enjoy this walk enough to want to come out again with us! :)

The Plan: [map]

  • The TOPW group usually meets at 10:00am, and you’re welcome to join us then or at any time during the walk.
  • The morning part of the walk starts in Budd Sugarman Park, cuts across Ramsden Park, heads a short way up Avenue Road, hugs the train line east to Yonge and then turns north to the lunch stop.
  • We usually stop for lunch at a pub, and this walk is no exception; we’ll aim to be at the Monk’s Table by about 12:30pm.
  • After lunch we’ll head south on Yonge, back to Budd Sugarman Park for the start of the “official” 2-3 hour Worldwide Photo Walk. (I say “official” because the recommendation is for the WWPW to be 2 hours, but you’re welcome to join us for all/part of the walk.)
  • From there we’ll walk around the east side of Rosedale subway station, through another park and along Rosedale Valley Road. Cutting west on Church and then Davenport, we’ll pass by Jesse Ketchum school on our way to Hazelton Avenue, then south to Cumberland St and east to the post-walk stop.
  • We always end our walks at a pub; we should arrive at the Duke of York (close to St.George subway) by about 5:30pm.

What do you need?

  • Obviously a camera would be a good idea! Doesn’t matter if it’s film or digital; Canon, Nikon, medium format, or even a phone!
  • We’ll be walking through a couple of parks, so wear your “sensible” shoes :)
  • As the regular members of TOPW will tell you, I have a knack for organising photo walks on rainy days, so be prepared – bring rain gear for yourself and your camera.
  • If you’re joining us for lunch and/or post-walk drinks, don’t forget money and photo ID.
  • I’ll publish my phone number closer to the date; be sure to have it with you in case you’re running late or get separated from the group.

Sharing your photos:
There is a Toronto Photo Walks group on Flickr, which is where most people post their shots from our walks. (We have a website and Facebook group too, but Flickr is where most people hang out.)

What did I forget?
If you have any questions, leave a comment and I’ll try to answer quickly.

    We’ve got a growing waiting list so if anyone who’s signed up cannot make it, please remove yourself or leave a comment.

    Hi Paul,

    I’m in Key West for all of August and can’t seem to get my iPad to let me sign up. Can you put me on the wait list.

    Cheers,
    Andrew

    There’s one more scheduled Toronto Photo Walk before the WWPW; check our website @ http://topw.ca

  6. Kelvin Benignus says:

    how do i know if im registered or still on the waiting list?

    • Paul Henman says:

      You’re #6 on the waiting list (as of 7:30am Thursday); according to the list that I can see “The waiting list represents the priority in which attendees will be added to the main walker roster if/when space is available. If you were added to this location’s waiting list you will receive an email upon making the registered walker roster. If you’d prefer not to wait, you’re welcome to sign up for a different location.”

    Thanks to everyone who joined us on the Worldwide Photo Walk!

    Please remember to tag your photos with "TOPW:SY" (Summerhill & Yorkville) and add shot (or two) to this thread – just put the image’s URL in square brackets and Flickr will do the rest!

    When we post the group shot, please tag yourself – ideally add a note (draw a box on the photo) and "add a person" rather than just using the "People in this photo" section.

    Just for the Worldwide Photo Walk there’s an additional WWPW Toronto group; please add the tag "wwpw" for anything you post here.

    Here’s some info I received from the WWPW people:

    After the Photo Walk

    Once your walk is over, walkers will be able to log on to the Worldwide Photo Walk website, go to your walk page, and submit their best photo from the event to the contest. While submitting a photo to the contest is not required, there are lots of great prizes available to the winners!

    Walkers (and leaders) can also share photos from their Photo Walk on the Official Worldwide Photo Walk Flickr Group. Photos from events all around the world will be shared here so the entire community can see the global event they were part of. These photos are not part of the competition, but a great way for everyone to share their experience with the rest of the world.

    Walkers will have until 12:00 noon EDT October 7th to submit their best photo to the contest. After that, leaders will have until 12:00 noon EDT October 10th to choose the winning photo from your walk. To choose the winning photo, just log in on the Worldwide Photo Walk website, go to your walk page, and scroll down till you see all of the submitted photos. Click the button underneath the photo you’d like to choose as the winner, then confirm on the window that comes up. And that’s it!

    Leaders are also welcome to set up their own Flickr group just for their local walk if you would like to. This way your walkers can easily share their favorite photos from your walk with one another without sorting through thousands of other images.

    And, lastly, we’ll be sending you more information on the Photo Walk Leaders Contest in the coming weeks. In short, leaders will be able to submit their best photo from the Photo Walk once all of the walkers’ winning images have been chosen, again, more info on that coming soon.

    Thanks again for helping us with this history-making event. We couldn’t do it without you, and are always thankful for such great leaders stepping up to help others grow their love of photography. We hope you have a great Photo Walk, and we can’t wait to see your photographs!

    Brad Moore
    Photo Walk Coordinator

    Thanks again to everyone who joined us; hopefully you had a great time and we’ll see you again on future Toronto Photo Walks.

    ~~~
    Jeff asked if the whole day or only the afternoon counts as the WWPW; answer is it’s the whole walk.
    I’ll post details of the October 15th "Fall Foilage" walk later this week; there’s also a walk on October 29th and then it’s our 2nd Anniversary Party on November 12th – put it in your diary and make sure you’re there!!!!
  9. Jeff Stewart says:
    Congratulations Laura.
    “Rails Through Town” is a fantastic shot.
