Photo Walk Description

I was going to try and get us a photo safari at the Topeka, Zoo. They will be closed that day in preparation for their Zoobelie. I would like to meet downtown in front of Wolfes Camera. There is a lot of architecture to photograph downtown. If anyone has any suggestions for somewhere else I will entertain them. This will be fun no matter what.

  1. Heather says:

Just FYI, Oct. 1st is the date for Zoobilie this year, and the zoo’s calendar says the zoo is closed that day.

  2. Bruce Stephenson says:

OK had not looked at their calendar, I have a couple of other places in mind, I am going to scout them tomorrow and then will make appropriate changes then.

Thanks for the heads up Heather.

    Bruce

  3. Melissa Meek-Shields says:

Is the walk full? I can’t seem to find the join walk after I log in.

  4. Heather says:

I would be interested in walking in more of North Downtown. Under the highway, over by the rail yards and river.
I would gladly volunteer to take part of the group, if there are people who would like to walk that way.

  5. The rail yards sound like an awesome idea. What technologist (engineer, software developer, etc.) doesn’t love trains? Trains are cool: always.

It’s time for me to re-photograph Potwin Place (see below). I fully understand if the people that actually live in Topeka are Potwin-Place-ed-out.

I don’t know if I can make it yet. My illness greatly limits what I can do, and when I can do it. So, if I don’t show up on time, then have fun!

    • I like the idea of photographing the rail yards. Do we need to get any kind of permission to use that site. Lets plan on that, I like what I see in that area.

      • Paul Danger Kile says:

That’s a good question. I used to walk around railyards often, but never with a large camera, or other people.

Change of subject: Heartland Park Topeka allows shooting at the road course. You do need to check in with security. I will post here before I go there again, in case someone wants to go along.

  6. Paul Danger Kile says:

Heartland Park Topeka is actually having motorcycle track days on Oct 1-2. That’s where enthusiasts and amateur racers get to practice on the road course.

If every single person here is interested in that, then that’s a possibility. If a single person isn’t crazy about that, then we shouldn’t go there, since we can still do both anyway.

  7. Donald Martin says:

I am not to crazy about going to Heartland Park. I don’t think BNSF will let us into the rail yards. Maybe a nice walk for downtown to the yards and around them and back though.

  8. I have contacted BNSF and asked about picture taking around the rail yard. They have said we are welcome to take any picture we like from a public area but they will not let us in to take pictures. Pretty much what I expected. My biggest concern was safety in that area. I do not think we can safely move about in that area. Does anyone know someone from the police department that would be willing to walk along with us, and participate if they like, for our security. I don’t think a group of people walking along there with thousands of dollars of camera equipment is a good idea. So unless someone can get a police officer to go with us I want us to stay in the downtown area. Or if I get contacted by BNSF and they say it is ok then we can change to that location.

  9. Margaret Miller says:

Does anyone know what the route is going to be? Thank you!

  10. I was hoping maybe BNSF would change their mind. But no dice so the route will be. South on Kansas Ave until we get under the freeway. Then we will see how everyone is doing. If everyone is doing fine we will continue south on Kansas Ave until we get to the bride going over the Kansas river then we will turn west and follow along the river for about two blocks then we will turn North and work our way back towards 7th Ave. We will check out several allies on our way down and on our way back. There are a lot of interesting places to look at along the way. Lots of architectural things to take pictures of along the way. When we are finished you are welcome to join us at the Kansan Grill downtown for something to drink and something to eat if you like. http://kansasgrille.com/ 705 S. Kansas Ave., Topeka, KS 66603, (785) 233-0086. Get prepared today it should be a lot of fun tomorrow morning. Talk to your friends there is still room for 29 more to come.

  11. I am not going to make it. :-(

  12. Perry Adkins says:

Thank you for a great walk downtown.

  13. Donald Martin says:

Does anyone know the name of the young girl that was taking photos with us on the walk? Or does she have a web site I would love to see some of her photos.

  14. In case you have not seen the change, the deadline for uploading your photos is the 10th. I see some great photos on the Flicker site. If you want to enter the contest then be sure to get your photos uploaded by the 10th. Remember you get Scott Kelby’s latest book if you win the contest.
