Photo Walk Description
Hi everyone! I’m Ryan Macalandag and I am your leader for the Tagbilaran Photowalk. If you don’t know what Scott Kelby’s Worldwide Photowalk is (or what the heck a photowalk is for that matter!), please take your time to go here: http://worldwidephotowalk.com/faq/ and read up quick.
WHO CAN JOIN?
Everyone can join regardless of your photo camera. You may even bring a video camera with you if you opt to! We welcome DSLRs, film cameras, digicams, lomography cameras, Holgas, medium format, rangefinders, polariods, pinholes or what have you. As long as you can take pictures with them, it’s perfectly okay. Being friendly is a PLUS, since after all, photowalks are social events (Scott Kelby).
Prepare to have oodles of fun and buckets of photos as well as we go around the city through designated routes (please check map for route). Not only that, this worldwide walk will be a contest and you get to submit your photos and hopefully win a few not so bad prizes! (Go here to check out the prizes: http://worldwidephotowalk.com/prizes/ — not so bad huh?). One (1) winner will even be awarded as the Local Winner — who gets a prize, too. Sadly, since I am this walk’s leader, I don’t get to join. Boohoo.
THE ROUTE
Since we will only have up to two (2) hours for the walk, I chose a shorter route from Plaza Rizal, Tagbilaran City to the K of C Wharf. After the walk, we will all meet at Takito Restobar in Gallares Street for socials, drinks or even dinner. Here are the highlights of the route:
–START
1. Plaza Rizal Kiosk – we meet here and start here
2. Old Agora Area / BQ Mall / City Square – lots of people here
3. BISU/Putong Area – hopefully, students will be coming out although I doubt it since it is a Saturday
4. City Wharf / Pier – nope, no sunset here yet. Lots of people here too.
5. K of C Wharf – best Tagbilaran sunset here, IMHO. This is the end of the road at around 6pm.
–END
6. Takito Restobar – we’ll meet here for socials, drinks or dinner maybe.
SUBJECTS
WHAT to take pictures of? See here for last year’s winning photos to get a clue: http://worldwidephotowalk.com/bestphotos/ but basically, you may shoot anything – people, children, community life, transportation, architecture, details, abstracts, shadows, light fixtures – your creative eye should decide. Even models are allowed as long as they are shot on the route – but, where’s the fun in that?
Here is a good post from the FAQ regarding contest photo submissions:

Q. What are the rules for pictures I can submit to the contest?
A. We’ve had a ton of questions each year about this. Most recently, we’ve had lots of questions about model shoots during the walk. Here’s how we feel about it: you can shoot models as long as it happens on the walk route, during the official 2-hour (approx.) walk time chosen by your walk leader. Also, you can use Adobe Photoshop to your hearts content, as long as everything in your photo was taken during the official walk hours along on the walk route. You can’t go back at sunset and shoot it in better light, and so on. Also, you can’t add a better sky that you shot in that same location on some other day. Basically, whatever you submit, it has to be taken during the official walk you participated in. You can shoot panos, HDR, B&Ws, you can create collages, you can process them with Instagram on your iPhone—I don’t care—it just has to be all shot during your 2-hour walk. If you don’t agree with the rules, no sweat whatsoever—just don’t enter the competition portion of the walk.

PHOTOWALK TIPS
1. Firstly, and I reiterate, a photowalk is a social event and let’s treat it as so. Inasmuch as we’d want to challenge each other with our best photos, we likewise should be able to learn from each other and as one community (regardless of clubs, orgs or associations) be able to enjoy our passion in photography at the same time.
2. Safety first. Never walk alone. Get a buddy or walk with your friends, club or group. We will never be responsible for anything untoward that might happen to any of the walkers.
3. It’s good to be with friends also so you can swap lenses.
4. Respect other photographers. Frame-crashing is frowned upon. If another photographer is setting up his frame (props/models/scene), ask him if you can shoot the same set-up. Frame-hogging is likewise a no-no. Take time to shoot something but if other photographers are lining up behind you waiting, give them space also.
5. Bring water, snacks other comforts. Photowalks are the same as your regular walking routine. It can get tiring.
THE WINNING SHOT
(Which photos usually win)
1. Lighting. Light creates drama, ambiance and lays down the foundation of your story/photo. Find the light.
2. Focus. Good pictures should have an element that captures your eyes no matter how your vision go around the frame. It helps if it is photographically sharp this element, too. Contrast creates focus also. Color also.
3. Composition and Framing. Each element in the photo should relate to the whole story. Crop out weak elements and clutter. Keep it simple, Suzie (KISS).
4. Use foreground and background elements effectively.
5. Lastly, just be candid. Moving photos are usually just “captured” with ease rather than painstakingly created.

Hahahah..painom na bai Jo!! Nice take by the way
patak2x na lang daw master jerwin!hehehe
Congratulations, Keith Joseph Sepe! Excellent photo!
HOW WE CHOSE? Since I wanted the selection of the winner to be fair and unbiased, I took the services of ace photographer Lemuel “EmWing” Montejo (taga Dauis, pero naa sa Japan karon nagtrabaho, http://www.flickr.com/people/emwing/) to help me decide on the winner.
We both had had a difficult time choosing the local winner, although we both new from the headstart that we had the same top pick. The difficulty is perhaps from the low return of entries. From 50 registered walkers, only 13 photographers uploaded their photos. I would have personally wanted more photos to select from. Maybe next time?
So, anyways, top three pick were:
#1 – Nicolai Jansen Besas
#7 – Lawrence Louie Uy
#12 – Keith Joseph Sepe
Our main goal was to pick a photo that could hold water in the international contest. So the universality of the subject and composition including overall image quality were the main issues. Like for #1, image quality was a bit off, although the expression captured was great. Image #7′s composition and expression was nice also. But in the end, #12′s solid framing, subtle timing and vibrant colors won the day. Maybe, just maybe, it will be picked for the world’s top 10.
There. Painom kuno Mojojo ui!
-ryan
kuyaw na jud ni si pareng sepe master, hehe. dapat na jud ni mang libre.
I am not sure if some of the walkers were unaware that the entries for the contest were to be uploaded on this site, not on the flickr group page, despite constant reminders from master Ryan.
Anyway, aside from the contest itself, another main objective of the event was to create a medium for fellow photographers to meet, walk and socialize…
And surely, everyone was a winner on this part.
‘Til next year everyone!
Congrats!
hats off brotha!congrats!
