Photo Walk Description

Hello, everyone! I’m excited to be leading the first Staunton, Va. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Staunton,_Virginia), Worldwide Photo Walk on Sunday, Oct. 2.

The map here was giving me a bit of an issue — especially around the Mary Baldwin area — so if it’s not working correctly for you, check out the walk route here: http://bit.ly/raUFBK

Those of you from Staunton know what a charming and historic downtown the city has. For those coming from a bit farther afield, this walk will hit up some of the main downtown streets which are known for their striking architecture. Some highlights along the route include: the historic depot and warf area, beautifully restored buildings so colorful you’ll think you’re in San Fran, the old 1880s-ish court house, the Stonewall Jackson hotel and it’s well-known marquee, the American Shakespeare Center’s recreation of the Blackfriar’s Playhouse, along the Woodrow Wilson presidential library, a little slice of Mary Baldwin College, the main downtown stretch of E. Beverley St. with it’s tudor, art deco and Victorian storefronts and friendly faces, and wrapping things back up at Irish Alley.
And all of that in about a mile and a half!

Photographers of all skill levels and equipment are welcome. Staunton is pretty hilly, so plan on shoes you can comfortably walk in, and comb your hair — you never know when a fellow photog will ask you to stand in for a couple of shots.

A little about me: I’m fairly new to the area and am loving every minute of getting to know Staunton. My background is a little all over the place.I’m the graphic designer for ASC, I just left a job in print journalism and used to shoot sports, I run my own wedding/portrai photography studio and previously did design and photography for an ad agency in Raleigh, N.C., and my degree is in painting. So I hope I can share some things I’ve learned over the years and, in return, learn from everyone else!

Feel free to send any questions my way, and I look forward to being part of the Worldwide Photo Walk!

  • Staunton walk!

Sorry this is going out late, the system was been a bit buggy on my end for some reason.

Looking forward to seeing everyone who is willing to brave the chill at 2 at the downtown Wharf parking lot off of Johnson Street!
Our first stop will be inside the glass blowing studio at Sunspots after that, so expect some beautiful colors.
I will be bringing route maps along, since the map on this site never allowed me build the correct map, and I moved things around a little to help avoid some of the steeper hills for a couple people who were concerned.

Make sure you are bundled up and I will see you all there!

OK. The more I mess with the map, the worse it’s getting.

Here’s the photo walk route as it currently stands: http://bit.ly/raUFBK
I’ll try to get the embedded one fixed, but there’s something buggy going on!

Hi Lauren, I guess a photowalk leader I can’t register for your walk, but would still like to join in. I’ve always wanted to explore Stauton!

  3. Susan Peden says:

I am so glad that we will have a Staunton walk this year. I like only a few miles away and love to shoot in Staunton. I have gone to the Charlottesville walks two of the three years and really have enjoy being there.
    I can hardly wait.

  4. Susan Peden says:

One more idea. If you have not been there, visit the Glassblowing Studio and watch the artists there create. It is a great free show and right near the start and finish of the walk.

  5. Pat Temples says:

I tried to join this walk, but first couldn’t log on under my previous logon info, and then when I tried to re-register, it tells me the username has already been registered. Help, please. I registered successfully for the Fredericksburg walk, but had to pull out due to a family committment, so I know I am registered.

    • Pat Temples says:

Just got an email that I am successfully registered.

      • Lauren Rogers says:

        Hi Pat,
I also got an email saying you were registered. You aren’t showing up yet on the list of attendees here, but I think that takes a little time to update. I’ll keep an eye out to make sure it has you listed before the day of, and check with the tech people if it looks like there is any issue.

Thanks for joining us, looking forward to havingyou.

        Lauren

    Hi,Lauren

This will be my very first photo walk. I signed up to the one in Charlottesville the first day I found out about the photo walk and run into a friend at the Farmers’ Market this morning and found out there will be one in Staunton. So I canceled my Charlottesville walk to join this one. Thanks for the hard work to put this together and can’t wait to meet everyone next Sunday. I also have a friend show interest and want to join. Will ask her to sign up too.

  7. Lauren Rogers says:

    Hi Lili!

Excited to have you! This is the first one to be held in Staunton, and as I’m fairly new to the area, I appreciate people spreading the word.

  8. Donald says:

Lauren, where is a good place to park? Is there metered or free street parking near by the starting point?

    • Susan Peden says:

Right at the meeting area is a large lot. There is a small fee.

    • Lauren Rogers says:

      Hi Donald,

I didn’t get an alert about this comment and missed it on here, sorry!

The lot right at the Wharf is free to park on the weekends. There is also a lot of free on the weekend parking downtown, parallel parking, but the lot will be best since it’s right there!

  9. Donald Sturgis says:

Sorry I didn’t make the walk. Lost track of time doing a small gardening project. I’m going to download your map and maybe make it out there on my own. Maybe if I give you a little heads up, we can meet to take photos.

    Don
