Photo Walk Description

Walk in the footsteps of changing South Africa –
We start where Hector Pietersen was the first person killed in the 1976 Student Uprising in Soweto. We will meet in the car park, and then take a walk through the streets of Orlando West to the famous Vilikazi Street, where we will be able to see the homes of no less than two Nobel Peace Prize Winners, Nelson Mandela and Bishop Desmond Tutu.
We will take a wander throught the streets, and stop at the Mandela Family Museum, and probably pause for refreshment at one of the local eateries.
The walk will end up back at the Hector Pietersen Museum, where you will be able to either go in and view the history surrounding the Soweto Students Uprising in June 1976, or climb back in your cars and head home to process your pictures.
This is one that you don’t want to miss!
Further details will be put together as the time approaches.
Please do contact me with your e-mail address, or visit www.afripixel.com for other updates, and to post your images.
See you soon!

  • Details for Saturday's Photowalk in Soweto....

Right, the countdown has begun, and there are only a couple of days left to the big event! You might have thought that things were quiet, but behind teh scenes, there has been quite a lot of activity! I have made a couple of arrangements, so that we can have a great experience on Saturday morning. Please do not stress about safety – the area is quite safe to park your car, and to walk through!

    Meeting up:
We will be meeting in the car park of the Hector Pieterson Museum. The parking is at the back of the museum, on the corner of Pela and Khumalo streets. Look out for the Afripixel banner – I will be right next to it!
Please be there by 09h00- we would want to walk as early as possible to get the best light! The group will depart no later than 09h15.
Don’t despair if you miss the group – just take a quiet walk down Moema Street to Vilikazi Street – we will catch up with you there!!

    GPS Coordinates (decimal):
    26°14.090′S
    27°54.517′E.

    Recognising each other:
Please will you wear either a black or a white shirt or top. That way we will be able to see who is part of the group more easily.

    What to bring:
Camera – (would be kind of handy!)
    Tripod (optional)
    Flash (optional)
    Extra lenses (optional)
    Hat
    Sunblock
Raincoat (there might be a little rain, according to the forecast)

    Costs:
The walk itself is free of course, but there are a couple of stops that you might like to take part in.
    - Hector Pieterson museum – R40 adults R5 students R5 pensioners (10h00-17h00)
    - Mandela Family house – R40 adults, R20 Scholars and pansioners R5 for children under 6. (09h00-17h00)
    - Something to buy a souvenir, perhaps – there are lots of local vendors along the walk!

    Walk itinerary:
I have arranged a guide to tell us a little of the detailed history and guide us through our walk. He will be able to give you insight into some of the heritage that you have perhaps not heard about before!
We will be stopping off at the Dube Men’s Hostel (optional if you are nervous) to get an insight into daily life in a unique environment!
We will then take a walk down to Vilikazi Street to visit the Mandela Family House, a little further down we will walk past Bishop Desmond Tutu’s house and stop off at the famous “Vilikazi Street in sign language” statues. A short walk down the hill will bring us to the Hastings Ndlovu Bridge display.
After all this walking, we will be hot, tired, hungry and thirsty, so we will stop off for a drink and something to eat at Shikumzi a famous tavern on Vilikazi street.

    Photo sharing:
When you are done, please upload your photos to the dedicated gallery on Afripixel (www.afripixel.com). In order to take part in the Scott Kelby competition on the World Wide Photowalk page, you will need to upload your best pics there as well. There will be more details on how that competition works immediately after the walk, so do keep checking back there!

    Raffle:
I will be holding a raffle for a book on Photojournalism on the morning. For R50 you will get a ticket in the raffle – the proceeds of the raffle will go to our guide….!

I am looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday morning.

    • Hi Schalk

Sorry, but I will only be doing the one walk on the Saturday morning. I do know that there are other walks around JHB and Pretoria that will take place on Saturday afternoon and on Sunday.

We have tried to coordinate the times so that anyone who wants to do all of them, will still eb able to do so!

I do hope to see you.
      Cheers
