Photo Walk Description

Note: The Official Worldwide Photo Walk Date is July 24th, 2010

Hi Everyone;
My name is Rig Galvez, I am a professional photographer who lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area.
I am the leader of the photo walk this year again. Last year was my first time leading the (second annual) event, and was pleased with the turn out. Everyone was great, considering the fact that it was a very long walk. This year I made it much shorter, but I did include great places like Mission Dolores, Clarion Alley and 24th and Mission where there is always a lot of action.
We may start at 24th and end at 16th, simply because of the amount of traffic and the dynamics of the neighborhood.
Due to the tremendous learning experience and outstanding success, I am sure this will fill up rather quick. I do encourage people from last year to participate one more time.
Please contact me direct if you have any questions, comments, suggestions, feedback etc. You may also find photos from last year walk here: http://www.flickr.com/groups/sfmissionwalk/
Look forward to finding your participation.

Best regards,

Rig Galvez
P.D. Please make sure your calendar is free on the day and time of the walk before you sign up, and if for any reason something does come up and you can’t attend, please make sure you notify us.

  • HUGE FAVOR TO ASK!!

The 2010 San Francisco’s Mission District 3rd Annual Photo Walk was a complete success!!

    Why?

    1. everyone was on time! (except me i was running five minutes late due to missing the train)
    2. the walk had two changes in weather, cloudy the first hour and a half and sunny the secont part.
    3. thirty out of fifty showed up, good number.
    4. wonderful bunch.
    5. we ended on time and at muddy water cafe, by 12:30ish were at least half met for coffee and chat.
    6. i’ve seen some great shots already on our flickr page.
    7. no complaints… yeeeey!
    8. everyone walked at their own pace.
    9. no one got lost.
    10. no one got a kiss from the drunk lady.

oh yeah, 25 from the original list did not make it. (bummer!) and please remove yourself so we can make room for some who did show up from the waiting list! they would love to submit their work. (you know who you are)

  • TODAY IS THE DAY!!!

If you have walkers who can’t make it to the Photo Walk, it’s very quick and easy for them to un-signup. This walkthrough has been posted on the Photo Walk blog, which can be seen here:
    http://worldwidephotowalk.com/2010/07/uploading-contest-images

You can send them that link so they can make room for people on your waiting list if you have one. Here’s the walkthrough for walkers:

Step 1) Go to WorldwidePhotoWalk.com and log in

Once you’re logged in, you’ll see your Photo Walk page.

Step 2) Just above the map, you’ll see a button that says “Leave This Walk.” Just click that, and it will un-register you for that walk. If there’s a waiting list, the next person on it will automatically be moved up to the main list.

  • MEETING POINT AND TIME

    we will keep things simple:

meeting point 16th St BART STATION
    TIME: 9:30 SHARP
PLEASE TAKE A FEW MINUTES TO READ WHAT TO BRING.

I noticed last year some people asked me to bring t-shirts
so I made it a point to have some nice shirts made for us
which I plan to distribute at cost on the day of the event. (this is an option)

Remember to travel “light” and don’t bring anything unnecessary. Do bring water please.
My telephone number is: 510-209-7271 and it is to be used ONLY if you get lost or you
have an extremely important question that it not outlined in here.
I WORK UNGODLY HOURS WHICH INCLUDE COMMUTING 60 MILES DAILY IN HEAVY TRAFFIC.
DON’T CALL ANYONE BEFORE OR AFTER 8 (ACCORDINGLY) if you leave a message please state your name, call-back tel number and the nature of your call.
(last year I had people calling me at 1am the morning of the event to ask if we “were still going to have the walk”. Typically I don’t curse but I had the urge at that point.)

Last but not least: CHECK YOUR BART HOURS AND SCHEDULES AND PLAN AHEAD FOR ANY TRANSFERS. GET OFF AT 16TH STATION. WE ARE MEETING UP AT THE PLAZA NEXT TO WALGREENS.

At the end we should meet at Muddy Waters Cafe on Valencia and 24th… again this is AT THE END OF OUR WALK.

THOSE WHO PLAN NOT TO ATTEND, NO NEED TO CALL ME OR TEXT ME OR EMAIL ME. However I do ask to please remove yourself from the list. There are 30 people waiting. Another thing you must remember: Not everyone is kind to notify or remove themselves, they simply do not show up. I don’t mind bringing the ENTIRE GROUP, be it more than the planned, if you want to come for the experience, that is just ME and does not apply to any other group, nor it is a rule. As courtesy to those who have been patiently waiting, I extend the offer to come over anyhow and join us for the experience.

For the record, Last year out of 50 these are the stats:

    28 showed up
    12 went to a wedding
    5 forgot
5 got lost or were late
5 showed up without registration, they came for the walk
    15 had SLR’s the rest had point-and-shoot
    15 submitted their work
5 didnt know how to submit
    10 finished strong
    the rest faded away.

I do anticipate this year to have 60 people showing up
    40 registered the others unregistered
i do anticipate to have 50 photos submitted.

    THIS IS IT FOR NOW

  • JUNE 16 ADDENDUM

Scratch the idea of a second day photo walk. We ‘is’ what we ‘is’.

  • JUNE 16 UPDATE - PLEASE KEEP US POSTED

    PHOTO WALK

It used to be, leaders were able to add and remove people. According to the main website that has been changed and now we ask people remove themselves. I am not sure how many people read the previous notice I sent last time, but if you plan to be absent on that day, as a huge favor, I ask you to please go to the same site where you registered and look for the feature that removes your name in order to give your space to the next person waiting in line.

    Much appreciated.

    Rig

    =======================
ON THE LIGHT SIDE: There are fifty “confirmed” walkers who have been signing up to the flickr and facebook sites set up exclusively for you, and there are 21 people waiting. AS of Today. I know for a fact more people will come in so there is a possibility that I add a second day and walk on the 25th as well. Note this is only a plan for people who are on the waiting list, and not an alternative for those who are already signed up. (would be chaos).

Bear in mind that on the day of the walk many will not attend, (that’s just the nature of these types of events) maybe not you, but some will forget or have other priorities. Last year 12 people signed up as group and all 12 decided to have an early brunch… just to give you an idea. This year I am trying to be a little bit more dilligent about making sure we establish some form of connection (i.e. flickr & facebook, which by the way people, there are some pristine samples of work) so yes we will all be there!

ONE MORE FAVOR! PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND LET YOUR SIGNIFICANT OTHER KNOW YOU WILL BE ‘BUSY’ ON THAT DAY MAKING HISTORY ON THE WORLD WIDE PHOTO WALK 2010

  • IMPORTANT INFORMATION - Please read

    Hello everyone!
This is my second consecutive year as being a Photo Walk leader, this year I am expecting for things to be A LOT better, since I learned from last year, also this year I plan to bring a fuller group.
There will be a waiting list in the event registration closes up, so don’t dismay, there will be plenty of room.
Please take the time to read the following bits of information as I consider them of extreme importance to everyone.

    1) Safety. I can’t stress enough about safety. Last year was very successful in this area, since most folks appeared to be alert, walking near Market and Dolores where there was a lot of traffic, including bikes and rail street cars. Plan to sleep and rest well the previous evening. Be careful and aware of your surroundings, and use common sense when approaching people on the street, not everyone enjoys to get their picture taken by a total stranger. Test the ground.
    2) Route. The route will be very simple, we will start at one BART Station and end at the next, for your convenience! Note: There is no place to park at either of those two stations, so your best bet is to leave your car at home or at a BART station that offers parking.
    3) Ending Place. Last year we ended up at Pancho Villa’s Taqueria on 16th, as well as an alternative place for those who decided they did not want to eat, but enjoy a cup of coffee at Muddy Waters Cafe. They offer free Wi-Fi, in case you want to do something with your images right away.
    4) The route has been planned and surveyed. Last year’s route was way too long, due to an over estimate from my part. This year is actually been cut in half, to give you more quality time, and walk at a slower pace, since not everyone was 19 years old.
    5) Find parking in your area. I find the need to repeat this, because Parking Tickets are about $65.00 a pop, and parking is expensive $20.00. If you rely on public transportation from and to the BART station, that is even better. In my case, I plan to leave my car at Hayward Bart. This also brings me to the element of TIME. Do check the schedule as they run on a different schedule than weekdays, including transfers.
    6) This a social event. Yes, this is an event for those who love photography, by the same token, those who like to socialize, and make new friends. I know for a fact some met new people last year, and exchanged contact information to stay in touch, and share our world of photography, or any other common interest.
    7) Encourage to sign up to the Facebook and Flickr group. Ok, let me start by saying that not everyone will bring an expensive SLR, to the shoot. Many come with Point-and-shoot type cameras. This is not a contest about who is better than who, I would like to think this is a form or a way to express our passion for photography at any level. The best way I learned is by sharing our work, for that I planted two sites, and you can post there at any time, starting now. For the photo walk if you are a registered photo walker please tag your pictures as so: PHOTOWALK+2010, that way we can easily search later on. These two sites are public and you can invite your friends and relatives to join.
    8) Plan B – Rain or Shine- the following day same place and same time. VERY IMPORTANT. Last year there was a breakdown in communication among a few members. I was partially at fault for assuming they would check the website or their emails. It is impossible for me to call 75 people the night before or the day of, so I strongly recommend to check this site from time to time to see if there are any changes. I don’t foresee any changes this time, however, if it rains, anything beyond chances of light showers, this photo walk will be conducted the following day (Sunday July 25, 2010) same place, same time, same everything. This a safety issue and a security courtesy for those who may be less mobile than others.
    9) What to bring:
    a) sunscreen
    b) water
c)charged batteries for your camera or/and flash.
    d) walking shoes
    e) single dollars in change (the estimated budget for the entire walk is $20.00 between your transportation and a meal afterwards)
    f) bring plenty of smiles!
    10) What NOT to bring: (as funny as it may sound) weapons, a negative attitude (leave those two items at home).
    10) Photography Tips:
THESE ARE TIPS I’VE ACCUMULATED OVER THE YEARS, know the direction of the sunlight at all times and try to have the sun on your back when shooting, find a steady pose to keep your camera from moving, be yourself!

Incredibly this year the list filled up in just a couple of days. If I may remind everyone who did not make it to registration, I will keep an active waiting list, so don’t hesitate to search for it.

    See you soon!

  6. Carol Nash says:

Ditto, this will be my first time and I can’t wait.

  7. Marianne Bush says:

Have no idea whether I made it or not. Am sure there will be other walks in San Francisco, though. Should be a lot of fun. I love the area you chose, Rig.

    • William Palank says:

      Rig,
I was there shooting Carnaval as well over the Memoraial weekend. What a great little neighborhood. In fact I had breakfast a La Victoria this morning on 24th.
      Cheers,
      bill

      • Rig Galvez says:

Bill, yes it is a great neighboorhood, I will attempt to say it is the one with more diversity in it and cultural balance. It’s a friendly place to be.

    • Rig Galvez says:

Thank you Marianne, security was my main concern, and foot traffic is very common there. Along with the pieces of historical value, such as Mission Dolores, and a blend of different pop cultures.

  8. Scott Starks says:

This is my first photowalk and I look forward to the experience. I do have one question, does it make any sense to bring a tripod? Seems like the answer would be no, but I just want to check :)

    • digifoto says:

This will be my third photowalk, my first in this location. While others bring the whole enchilada, I prefer one camera, with a walk-around lens and maybe a prime. I’d rather concentrate on the sites than worry about lugging equipment around. And yes, there will be a lot of walking! Hopefully, we’ll have some enchiladas at the end of the walk! : )

    • Rig Galvez says:

yes it does make sense, depending on your style. ie: macro photography, architectural or if your camera does not have a VR (vibration reduction) feature.

Also, if you want to do self portraits, or want to frame your shots a little better, everything and anything helps.

      Cheers!

  9. don says:

Once again I am unable to get on the wait list it won’t submit. If anyone can help please do.
    Don

  10. Mark Koeppen says:

    Rig,

Hope this gets there in time but it is with greatest sorrow that I must remove my name from the list of registered walkers. Please offer my slot to the patient photographers standing in line (er…on line?).
Hope to see you next year.
Have a great day. We want to see photos of photogs and their technigues.

  11. Kent Demas says:

I hope everyone has a terrific time (I was just in that neighborhood today!). I’d love to be there as well but I’ll be at a motorcycle race that day.

  12. Linda L. says:

Hi Rig, will you let us know the exact meet location details soon? The map shows 16th Street, and you say “may meet” at 24th. We’ll meet in the middle? :^)

  13. Rig Galvez says:

    Hi Linda!

24th see you there for the second year in a row!

  14. John Hall says:

So the starting point is Mission &24th, not on 16th?

  15. Linda Lee says:

Hi Rig, OK. see you on 24th Street and not 16th. Your Leader News and Update info dated July 20th says 16th Street and I’m afraid that will be what people think is the meeting place. Thanks! Looking forward to it!

  16. ramon icatar says:

    Hello Rig,

Just checking in to verify that if I’m still in. I signed up last year and also “confirmed” thru your email earlier this year about tomorrow’s walk.

    Can’t wait. See you tomorrow.

What fun! I tend to “focus” on Deco, Neon, Terracotta, Travel and our 4 legged children, so went on the photo walk to see different things.

I just uploaded my photos to Flickr
