Photo Walk Description

Hello Everyone and Welcome to the Ste Anne-de-Bellevue Photowalk!

Located between Lake St Louis and the Lake of Two Mountains, Ste Anne-de-Bellevue has been an important crossroads for trade and commerce through the centuries. Established around 1700, this delightful village features a variety of architecture, from French Canadian style homes with their distinctive sloping roofs, a lovely church built in 1853, a rustic and antique filled Museum, an art gallery resembling a Caribbean style ranch house, to the red brick buildings of John Abbott College and much more. Sitting next to the St Anne-de-Bellevue canal and locks, a National Historic Site, there are many opportunities to take unique photos, from boats, to architecture, people to landscapes, patterns and textures, river reflections, to, if the weather co-operates, the arrival of fall colours. The meandering narrow streets provide lots of interesting angles too!

For those who have participated on past photo field trips with me, or the World Wide Photo Walk in 2009 in Old Montreal, you know I will have scouted some locations for you in advance, to offer you some interesting suggestions and perspectives. New participants are welcome too! If Mother Nature is in a good mood, the late afternoon sun will bask the building facing the canal in beautiful sweet light, especially as we approach magic hour leading to sunset at 6:35pm.

After that, we will head indoors to Dundees Restaurant, our meeting place, for some good food, drinks, camaraderie plus hopefully sharing some images and talk from the afternoon. My intention is to bring along a video projector and screen, so we can take a look at some of your images from the shoot during and after the meal!

So prepare your gear and your favourite shoes, as we take a walk on the wild side! See you at 3:15PM, outside DUNDEES RESTAURANT, on the Canal side.

Itinerary:
3:15PM Rendezvous outside Dundees Restaurant, on the CANAL side (the boardwalk). If RAIN, meet under the fabric covered terrace
3:30PM Start of walk (after a group photo)
6:35PM Sunset
6:45PM Rendezvous for drinks and supper at Dundees Restaurant, 2nd Floor (please enter via FRONT door)
9:00PM or possible later… Photowalk ends. Sniff! Sniff!

UPDATE: If the weather turns rainy and miserable towards the end of the walk, we will head indoors earlier. Nothing like a hot rum toddy to warm the soul I say!

  • And the WINNER from our walk is...

    Wednesday, October 12, 2011 Noon

    Hello Everyone,

Well I have to say, you did not make the selection process to pick the best image from our walk group very easy! That said, only ONE can advance to compete against the other 1,116 other Photo Walks, so the image I chose is… (drum roll please)…

Lina Lapore’s stimulating reflection image of a house with pigeons huddled in the cold on a window ledge. The little ripples from the raindrops just adds to the whole atmosphere, and really tells the viewer the kind of day it was. The colours are muted and not overly saturated, what you would expect to see on a cloudy day. Congratulations Lina!

If I could award a second and third place, 2nd would go to Ray Morency’s B&W image of the water lilies and raindrops. The composition is great, with a nice diagonal going on. And again the ripples from the raindrops, just adds to the whole atmosphere of the image. The tonal range of the B&W is just right.

Third would go to Josy Knup’s image of the door with the rusty mailbox, and amusing sign. The framing and composition is nicely accomplished.

And an honourable mention goes to JF Beauregard for his overhead photo of the tie post on the boat dock. I liked the distinctive composition and colour interpretation.

Click on any of the images, to view a larger version as submitted.

Thank you everyone for your submissions and for participating. Watch the WWPW main website to see if Lina’s image is picked as one of the Top 10, or as a People’s Choice Award – something you will be able to vote for!

    Bye for now!
    Frederic

  • Deadline EXTENDED - upload your photo by NOON Monday, Oct 10th

    UPDATE: Frday OCTOBER 7TH, 14H45

    Hi Everyone,

YES – the deadline to upload photos has been extended, to Monday at Noon, October 10th!

If you have not already noticed, there’s a new yellow box under my profile pic, where you can upload your best or favourite photo from the walk. Click on “Log in to Start” then enter your User name and password.

    NEW: Regarding File Size -
    1. Only ONE image per walker per location
    2. It should not exceed 1000 pixels on the long side at a resolution of 72 dpi
    3. The Maximum file size permitted is 1MB

You can do whatever you wish with the image! Get as creative you like – you may turn it into a B&W, add contrast, dodge and burn, add a vignette, etc! However, you MAY NOT add other elements (composting, graphic elements, etc) to your images that was not there during the walk at the time of capture.

Needless to say, the image I select to advance to the BIG competition against the other 1,117 photowalks – should have good sharpness (where applicable), composition and creativity. So make it you BEST effort! The selected image will also receive Scott Kelby’s superb new book “Light It! Shoot it! Retouch It! I own a copy, and I can tell you, it’s one helluva good prize.

The winning selection from our group will be now selected by October 13th. I look forward to your images!

    Good luck!

  • Protecting your cam from wet weather

    UPDATE: SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1st, 10h40

    Hi Everyone
I’ve been monitoring Environment Canada’s website… it looks like we will have changeable weather this afternoon. Though I’m the eternal optimist, I’m also the prudent Scout, and believe in their motto of “Be Prepared!” so pack some rain gear… just in case!

That said, in the event the weather turns foul, here’s an inexpensive way to create a good rain cover for your camera – by using Zip Lock freezer bags. From the grocery store, buy a box of heavy duty, extra large Ziploc brand FREEZER bags / le sac tres résistant pour la CONGÉLATION ZipLoc. These big bags measure 33cm x 39cm with 10 to the box, so you can use it for other things too!

These bags are big enough to put your camera inside, by cutting a hole in the bottom to fit your lens through, which is then taped to the lens barrel with black electrical tape. Scotch Magic Tape works too, though it is not as strong or as flexible as electrical tape. To fit the bag onto your tripod, another hole is cut where the camera attaches to your ball head or tripod pan and tilt head.

The opening of the bag is how you access the controls. With these big freezer bags, there’s lots of room to get your hands inside, and you can also close the bag if it suddenly starts to rain hard.

If the weather becomes really miserable, with too much rain and wind, then I will shorten the walk, and we will retreat to Dundees Restaurant for hot meals and drinks. Let’s be positive and hope Mother Nature is kind to us.

I look forward to meeting everyone today at 3:15pm. :)

  • Dundees Restaurant - our "apres walk" dinner & party rendezvous

For those unfamiliar with Dundees, it’s kinda an institution in St Anne. Establashed more than 25 years ago, it has a nice selection of meals at good prices, with most dishes at $17.95. Their fish and chips are great (they proudly make their own batter) as is there chicken brochettes – both of which I have indulged in.

If you’re a vegetarian, they have meals for you too. Of course you can keep it simple and have a soup or salad or just a beer… the choice is yours!

And as mentioned above, it will be a great place to socialize and meet some new friendly photographers. See you there after the walk!

  • Parking at the Photowalk

    UPDATE : FRIDAY SEPT 30TH, 9:10PM

After visiting St Anne-de-Bellevue tonight, I thought you should know there are some road closures in the village due to construction. After exiting from Autoroute 20, at the bottom of the ramp, turn left at the lights onto Rue St Pierre. You will see down the road, it’s blocked in front of you!

After passing the lights, turn RIGHT at the first intersection (before the road barrier) onto Rue College and travel down it. At the fork in the road, turn LEFT onto Rue Christie. The parking lot will be visible on your right side.

Free parking is available at another large lot under the renovated Autoroute 20 road bridge that spans the St Anne Canal.

It’s a five minute walk from either parking lot to the rendezvous point.

Zoom in on the map above for more detail, or copy and paste the link below into your web browser:

Sorry I will miss you guys. :( Falling down a flight of stairs while carrying boxes ain’t fun! Hey but the drugs are good! Have a great day!

    Paul.

    • Sorry to hear about your mishap Paul… we missed you!

We had a good turnout despite the light drizzle. The wet surfaces provided a nice shine on many subjects, while the overcast weather made for nice soft light. Most stayed for the dinner and socializing after the walk. A great time overall!

Be well my friend. Until the next time!
      Cheers… Fred

  7. Morrie Portnoff says:

Great choice Fred. Congrats to Lina.
