Thank you very much for submitting all your entries

We have a winner, but it was a close one!

Congratulations for Maria Wheatley, the winner of St Albans Worldwide Photo Walk 2012 Photo Contest!

I really like this black and white photo and the timing on this one was brilliant.

    Hi All,

Thank you for submitting your best shots. I can see some great pics here, it will be hard to pick THE ONE, but I’ll announce the winner tomorrow evening.

  • WWPW St Albans 2012 - Update

    Hi all,

Thank you once again for signing up to our walk. We now have 37 people coming and I already know about few other photographers that will sign up. It’s twice the amount we had last year. Bravo!

Here is the latest update about our photowalk on Saturday.

The plan will be similar to what we did last year as the route offers completely different locations to photograph and last year we ended up with a great collection of shots.

We are meeting at 10:00 in front of The Merchant Tea and Coffee Company (St Peter’s Street side). There will be a very short (but necessary) briefing and I will give you your Photo Walk plans with all the details you will need on the day (including map).

    Please don’t be late!

We will start with taking photos of St Albans market. It will be busy and there will be plenty of opportunities to take some great shots.

We will then move to the Clock Tower and St Albans cathedral – you can choose to go inside and try HDRs or photograph it from outside (try NW entrance!)

We will then follow the route to the Great Gateway to The Monastery and (apparently) the oldest pub in England – Ye Old Fighting Cocks.

This is the moment when you can choose what to do: you can photograph wildlife around the lake or stay for a short demonstration of simple and affordable strobist setup, perfect to get you started with off-camera flash.

The route itself is not challenging and should be accessible for anyone.

After that we will go to the pub (close to our meeting point).
I have managed to book a large area for us at O’Neill’s (Victoria Street) – the manager, Ian, is a great guy and is looking forward to see us.
The lunch menu is affordable (from £3.99) and their Classic Irish Beef burgers in sourdough buns are one of my favourites! Check their website for more details:
    http://www.oneills.co.uk/oneillsstalbans/

We are a large group so during our initial briefing I will be asking if you’re coming or not as I will have to let Ian know how many of us are staying for food.

At O’Neill’s we can sit down, share some of our best shots, pass the cameras around, get to know each other, exchange contact details, have a beer or two and generally have a good time – that’s what Worldwide Photo Walk is all about. Last year we had a great group of people attending the walk and I’m still in touch with almost every person that I was walking with.

    USEFUL INFO:

Parking: try St Albans railway station (£2 per day on Sat/Sun), The Maltings or St Albans Arena (all within walking distance from O’Neill’s and our meeting point).

    WHAT TO TAKE:

    - Camera, favourite lenses, cards… don’t take too much stuff with you, keep it simple.
    - Umbrella or waterproof jacket/poncho/something to keep you dry in case of bad weather
    - Bottle of water
    - sun cream ( )

    THINGS TO REMEMBER:

    - If it rains, we’re still doing it. I will be waiting for you in my weatherproof jacket. The weather forecast looks quite OK now so don’t worry too much! Please make sure that you will have something to secure your equipment in case of bad weather!

    - Take your time, explore the locations and take some great shots. If you don’t know how, ask me or any other photographer and I’m sure that we will be able to help.

    - It’s not a themed competition. It’s not even a real competition! You can shoot landscapes, details, do some street photography, take portraits of interesting people, go for architecture, shapes, textures, shadows, details or play with HDR shots, it’s up to you!

    - Some people will do the whole route in 30 minutes, some will make it in 3 hours. No rush, take your time and enjoy shooting with us.

    - Pub: you can join us after the walk but you don’t have to, it’s up to you!

    AFTER THE WALK:

    - Submit few of your shots on our Flickr website: http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpwstalbans2012/

    - Pick your best shot and submit it here on this photowalk page.

    - I will pick the best photo from the day. The winner will receive an ebook from Scott Kelby and his team

That’s it for now. Let me know if you have any question and see you on Saturday morning!

    All the best,

    Seb
