  • Recommended Learning

Suggestions from some of my fellow walkers and myself:

YouTube.com – you can find so many photography related videos. Look out for the Photoshop Guys for fun Photoshop learning.
Scott Kelby – his books, blog, and website are fantastic. Lots of free videos – just do a Google search.
Fundamentals of Photography by Tom Ang
Joe McNally – blog is a great place for learining.
Understanding Exposure and Understanding Shutter Speed by Bryan Peterson
    Kevin Kabuto’s Lighting Notebook
The Photographer’s Eye by Michael Freeman
Light: Science and Magic: An Introduction to Photographic Lighting
If you don’t want to read your camera manual, try the Magic Lantern series. They have books on most SLR cameras and are a bit easier to take in than a boring manual. I also recommend photobert.com. He makes “cheatsheets” to help you learn your camera as well as simple photography fundamentals.

For printing, I get mine done through mpix.com. In addtion, if printing my own photos, I use recycled photo paper which can be purchased at redriverpaper.com. Whatever printing service you use, think about what type of longevity you want with the photo. Walmart photo processing, for example, is inexpensive, however it can be because the archival properties of the photo paper are limited. That means over time, the photo will fade. When determining the type of paper (besides gloss, matte, metallic, etc) look at the quality. If you are taking photos you wish to become heirlooms or frame to place as wall decoration, investing in good quality paper is a must. The cost difference is usually minimal and well worth the extra dollar.

Link – photodough.com. Weekly deals for creative and business side of photography. Worth subscribing.

If anyone else has some learning suggestions, feel free to post in the comments. I just started writing a blog that has lots of photo tips and musings, so feel free to browse at http://garrisonphoto.blogspot.com/. I will be doing articles weekly. I will also be adding links to other blogs I find have valuable material on photography.

  • Post walk activity

If you are looking to do something after the walk, I highly reccommend the Princeton University Art Museum. The current exhibition is “the life and Death of Buildings”, an exploration of photograhy and architecture. Admission is always free, and there are always wonderful exhibits there. For more info, go to: http://artmuseum.princeton.edu/events/LifeandDeathofBuildingsAdditional/.

  • Logistics

Both groups will be meeting at the same place. When entering Palmer Square from Nassau Street, on the right hand side up the steps and near the side entrance to PNC Bank. We will be easy to find since it will be the group of people with camera bags. Group 1 is to arrive at 10am, and depart at 10:15am. Group 2 is to arrive at 10:30am, and depart at 10:45am

As a reminder, all participants must register. If you bring a guest, the guest must be registered on the walk site.

On arrival, please be sure to sign in with me (Christy). I will have notebook in my hand for signing, so easy to find. Or just listen for the really loud laugh.

I will have a walking route map for everyone. As a reminder, feel free to stray, and if someone stops and you want to keep going, do so. Everyone has different interests in what they like to photograph, and I want to be sure everyone gets enjoyment from the experience. I will be sending Twitter updates as to my location in case anyone needs me. My Twitter name is “njphotogirl” and account is www.twitter.com/njphotogirl. In addition, my cell is (646) 245-7849.

Please be sure to dress weather appropriate (Forecast is high of 53. Currently the say possible showers, but that can change). The walk is not strenuous. Depending on you pace, and what you find interesting, the walk can be from 1 to 2 hours. Comfortable walking shoes strongly suggested. In addition, I always suggest throwing a bottle of water or two in your bag, along with a snack.

Photography etiquette. You are welcome to bring your tripod. Please move to the side to make way for other people on sidewalks and high foot traffic area. This includes when using the tripod or just trying to get the right photo with your camera. In addition, taking photos of strangers from afar is fine. Taking photos of strangers in their view, should be proceeded by a polite request for permission. I have never received a “no” but I have received “thank you” for asking first.

After the walk, you are welcome to join us at the bar at Triumph Brewery. It will be lunch time, so I know I will be chowing down and after a long walk, possibly dessert first!

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

  1. Khürt says:

I’m so happy this is in the fall. Last year, the summer heat made the walk unbearable.

  2. Josh Turchin says:

I agree! last year was crazy hot.

  3. Wow! We are almost half full and over a month away. I am very excited about the walk this year. Going to be beautiful with the fall leaves and the university background.

  4. Brandt Steinhauser says:

Coming back to Princeton for my 2nd year in a row. I agree with Khürt about the heat last year. It will be nice to shoot in comfortable weather!

  5. Marlo Montanaro says:

Looking forward to seeing Princeton for the first time. I was going to do a walk at the Jersey Shore, but I do that all the time. This will be a little different.

Looking forward to walking around Princeton

  7. William Sneddon says:

Fall weather coupled with the location and history will make for an interesting shoot

  8. For those of you who participated last year, I am going to try a slighty different route, though the campus, no matter what, is an excellent canvas. In addition, I will also be handing out a list of spots we won’t have time to cover, but might be interesting for you to photograph at another time.

  9. Rajiv Mundayat says:

I live locally and I really enjoy shooting the campus and the surrounding areas. There is always something nice to capture. Great that the walk is happening in the fall this year.

  10. Marlo Montanaro says:

Wow, looks like our walk is one person short of full!

On the waiting list – but really looking forward to this walk!

I found another photo walk near my home. I’ll drop this one so that more people can join.

  13. Susan Mills says:

I believe I signed up for this walk but so far haven’t received any confirmation. Is it really changed to Oct. 2nd at the same time? Same place?

    • It is October 2nd. Sent a note but you may not have received it. The walk conflicted with another large group, so I agreed to move to Sunday. Weather is looking fabulous – sunny and high of 58!

  14. Licia G says:
