Photo Walk Description

Note: The Official Worldwide Photo Walk Date is July 24th, 2010

Experience the World’s longest pedestrian walkway and state park, the Walkway over the Hudson. The bridge deck stands 212 feet above the river’s surface and is 6,678 feet (1.28 miles) long, making it the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. Opened in October 2009, it has seen over 600,000 visitors. It is the former Railroad Bridge, built in 1888. It was the longest bridge in the world when it was built. It has beautiful architecture, and it gives you the feeling of walking on air. People walk, jog, bike, rollerblade and enjoy the Walkway. The views are incredible up and down river, with the Mid Hudson Bridge to the South. The City of Poughkeepsie is visible from the east side, and the Catskill foothills from the west side and to the north. The River is active with tugs, barges, sailboats, motor boats, jet skis, and crew teams. Take pictures of the scenic views, and the people and their pets on the Walkway. Go to www.walkway.org for much more information. It is unique!

Check out my Blog post at www.boglephoto.blogspot.com/2010/06/2010-third-annual-photowalk.

The bridge is relatively flat, with chest high railings, and the deck is over 25 feet wide. It is 1.25 miles long, so a round trip to the west side is 2.5 miles. You will be able to see the river from the middle of it, 212 feet above the water. For people concerned about heights, it is like being on the observation deck of the Empire State Building, or in a tall building. The only vehicles are Park Ranger carts or trucks that patrol the park. Its width and flatness does not give a sensation of being overly high.

We will meet at the Poughkeepsie Train Station, lower parking lot level, near the parking garage entrance and track elevator. There is free parking at the Station on Saturday, with a large lot and garage. You can also come up by Metro North Train from NYC. We will walk to the Walkway from the Train Station (a little under a mile) or have carpools to the Walkway (parking is limited there). From there, we will be on the Walkway for as long as you want. We will leave and walk back (down) to the Train Station, where we will meet at Mahoney’s Irish Pub www.mahoneysirishpub.com to gather, chimp our images, talk about the experience, and enjoy great food and drink. Those who want more can go to the waterfront just down Main Street. Note, Google Maps will not show the route for the Walkway. It is shown as the Rail Trail across the Hudson. The map shows the route to get to the Walkway.

  • Contact information and updates

We are less than a week away. I sent out an e-mail through the Photowalk system to everyone signed up requesting information to send updates directly. Please check your e-mail and see if you got it. If you can reply back to me I will have your e-mail, and I can send you my cell phone number in case we get split up.

It is supposed to be very hot for Saturday. I am wondering if people may want to start a bit earlier than 10:00, but do not know everyone’s availability. Can you contact me and tell me if you could do say 9:00 am? I am thinking of trying to get people to car pool from the train station to the walkway, or close by, as it is a distance. We can work this out on Saturday. The walk from the Walkway to the train station is about a mile, but there are sites, like a little Italy section of Poughkeepsie, complete with a couple of great pastry shops, if you like. We can also go there by car after the walk before going back to the Train Station, or do a short additional walk from the Train Station. The two shops are La Deliziosa at 10 Mt Carmel Place or Caffe Aurora at 145 Mill Street, both a short walk from the Train Station, and near Mt. Carmel Church which has a nice classic Church Steeple.

  • Poughkeepsie Journal highlights the Walkway Photowalk

Check out the Poughkeepsie Journal Enjoy section for an article about the Walkway over the Hudson Photowalk next Saturday, July 24, 2010. They included one of my images of Walkway before construction. We have a week left and room for more Photowalkers. Tell your friends to sign up. Check out my Blog for more updates.

  • What is a Photowalk? Check this out!

I have added a post on my blog that describes what a Photowalk is and what a Photowalk isn’t. I have added links to Scott Kelby’s first Photowalk and Jeff Revell, the Pro in ProPhotowalk.com, with more information, and links to pictures from my past walk. Check it out here: www.http://boglephoto.blogspot.com/2010/07/what-is-photowalk.html.

  • New Photos up, walkway prior to Construction.

I posted several new photos of the Walkway before it was the Walkway over the Hudson on my blog.

    www.boglephoto.blogspot.com/2010/07/pictures-of-walkway-before-construction.

These include shots of the former railroad bed and what you walked out on and saw the Hudson River below. It gives you a much greater appreciation of what the efforts to get the Walkway built had to go through. By the way, the entire bridge was inspected before the work was done and found to be in great condition. Minor repairs were done, but it used to carry two freight trains (east and west) as late as 1970, so it is strong.

Thanks to those who have signed up, and lets spread the word. I am going to get some information to the Poughkeepsie Journal to announce this event. I also will do a post on my blog of what is, what isn’t and what to expect of a photowalk. It is not instructional, but it is a good time.

Did a walk at Coney Island last year that was lots of fun. Thought I’d stick closer to home this year. Have photographed the Walkway several times but it is always a great walk and hopefully will present new challenges and new photographers to share knowledge with.
    Chris

  2. Jeff Kover says:

My daughter and I are looking forward to this photo walk. Both of us are avid photogs, my experience going back to film in the 70′s, and hers starting off with digital. We both have online blogs and love to show our work. Let me ask, will there be a rain date? Jeff

  3. I sent a message to all about the walk, but only heard from one person. Please check your e-mail account for two messages, and get back to me when you get it to confirm e-mail and contact information. I will post here again. I am thinking of moving the start time to 9:00 am as it is supposed to be very hot. If there is bad weather we can wait it out, or move it to the afternoon. High winds or electrical storms do not mix well with the Walkway, and safety is paramount. If we have to we can move it to Sunday as a rain date, but we will take every effort to get this in on Saturday. Check back here and my blog for updates. Bill

    • Katie Cullum says:

      Bill,

I just RSVP’s for tomorrow. Thank you so much for organizing this. Is there anything I need to know before coming tomorrow or information you need?

      Thanks again,
      Katie

  5. Kevin McKenzie says:

Hi, Bill. I registered for the walk a few days ago, but I can’t make the changed time, I don’t think. I can’t figure out a way to change my reservation. Next year, I hope.

  6. Thanks to all that went on the Photowalk. I had a great time. I updated my blog with the group photo and link to the Flickr group.
