Photo Walk Description

UPDATED ON OCTOBER 1, 2011

I’m Nancy Goldstein, and I’ll be leading the Olde Towne photo walk at 2 p.m. on Sunday, October 2, 2011. There’s a lot to see and do in Olde Towne, so if you’ve never been you may be surprised.

We’ll meet and explore the Courthouse Galleries at the NW corner of High and Court. From there, we’ll cross High and visit the Commodore Theater and Trinity Church. Then it’s down High to the Children’s Museum, where we cross the street to the Sports Hall of Fame. Finally, it’s back down High to the restaurant. We’ll meet at Amore at approximately 4:45 – 5:00. The restaurant is “casual Italian” but the menu has everything from pizza and pasta dishes, to hamburgers and club sandwiches. The food is good and prices are reasonable.

Parking is free on the High Street and city-owned garages in downtown Portsmouth on weekends. There is parking in the middle of a few of the cross streets but they have a two hour limit at all times. If you don’t find a space on High, I suggest the city parking garageon Middle Street, a block behind the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame. Please do not park in any of the TCC lots unless you have a faculty or staff sticker, because they will tow you!

You do not need any particular kind of camera for the walk, and it doesn’t matter how skilled you are in photography. Cell phone cameras, point and shoots, and SLRs and DSLRs are all welcome. Even if you’ve never used a camera before, you’re still welcome. The point of the walk is to meet new people and have fun. It is not a camera club meeting, so don’t let the type of camera you have, or your skill level with your camera, stop you from coming to Olde Towne.

Please email me with any questions. Rain date will be the following Sunday, October 9, at 2 p.m.

Working on lining up the restaurant in Olde Towne. Plan A is in place; working on Plan B. Should have something definite in a day or two.

  4. Thomas Kuntz says:

Sounds like a lot of fun. Might I suggest Segundo an Italian place across from the Gallery.

  5. Michael Preston says:

Hope more folks sign up soon. Olde Towne is rich in great photo opportunities…I’ve snagged several great shots there.

I’ve had a couple of things going on this past week and haven’t been able to get my fallback restaurant in place. The problem is that there are very few restaurants open in Olde Towne on Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Kuntz, who has not officially signed up yet, recommended Segundo’s. I checked with them last week and they are only open until 2 pm on Sunday, so that’s out. Same with Brutti’s and the Montgomery Grill.

If we don’t have more than 12 people, we’ll go to Roger Brown’s Sports Bar on High Street, about a half block up from Court Street. They were willing to reserve for 12 people, but with it being a football Sunday that’s all they will allow.

There is a second restaurant I know of that is open on Sunday; it’s an Italian place few blocks away further up on High Street, closer to Effingham. It’s a very good restaurant, and they have non-Italian food on the menu. If you know the area you know which restaurant I’m referring to, but I don’t want to officially name them until I’ve talked to them.

The route we’ll be following will be the Court House Galleries; then across the street to Trinity Church and the Commodore Theater. After that, we’ll head up a few blocks to the new Childrens’ Museum. I’m thinking that if we’re short of time at that point we’ll go across the street to the Sports Hall of Fame. If we have time, we’re only a couple of block away from the waterfront, which is usually interesting. Then, if there are less than 12 of us, we’ll loop back to Roger Brown’s. Or the other restaurant, if there are more than 12 of us and they can handle the group.
