Photo Walk Description

Note: The Official Worldwide Photo Walk Date is July 24th, 2010

Welcome to Portland after Dark!

Break out the tripods and flash units, boost your ISO’s and get ready for some big grain and long exposures! As near as I can tell, no one has done a night walk before, so let’s be the first!

We’re going to meet at the southwest corner of Pioneer Courthouse Square, where we’ll start our shoot. Then, we’ll begin to work our way up Broadway before we cut down past city hall to visit Lownsdale and Chapman Squares. From there, we’ll work our way over to Paddy’s at the corner of First and Yamhill where we’ll look over everyone’s work.

Note: Due to the late hour, very few “all ages” establishments seem to be open for large groups. While the walk is open to younger photographers, unfortunately Paddy’s is open to only those 21 and older.

Another note: To avoid any potential problems with shooting after dark, I will insist that we establish ourselves into groups of at least two or three photographers. I also encourage you to sign up with a friend, or to bring along a buddy (aka an intern or unpaid assistant). The leader of this group and/or anyone officially associated with NAPP or Scott Kelby’s Photowalk is not responsible for any injury or loss incurred during this event.

I am the Public Relations Manager for Columbia Helicopters, and photography is a large part of my work for the company. I have enjoyed photography for decades, and have worked as a photographer/reporter for several small community newspapers as well as serving as a Navy Photojournalist for 8 years. Basically, I could not imagine working in an occupation that didn’t include taking photographs.

I’ve always enjoyed sharing my knowledge of photography, but I don’t claim to have all the answers. As a result, I’m always willing to ask others for tips or techniques. I think this walk will allow all of us to share our knowledge, and I know we’ll get some stunning images.

  • Requests for Demo Tripods

If you need or would like to use one of the loaner tripods from Manfrotto, please contact me before the walk. I intend to park near Paddy’s – our walk termination point – and I’d prefer not to have to carry literally 50-pounds of tripods up to Pioneer Square if no one expects to use them.

If you make a request, please let me know if the loaner is your only option (head of the line), or if you would simply like to borrow one of these new beauties. Usage will be limited to first come, first served.

  • Tripods ARE allowed at Pioneer Courthouse Square

I had a question from a potential walker about the use of tripods at Pioneer Courthouse Square, and unfortunately the system is not allowing me to respond directly to him.

Before I applied to lead the walk, I contacted Stacey Schubel at the Pioneer Courthouse Square management office. She is the person responsible for coordinating events at the Square, and she assured me that tripods are allowed, as long as they are properly attended. After the walk was approved, I contacted her again to tell her that we would be there, and she again confirmed that tripods are allowed.

Based on the question I received, I will contact Stacey one more time, during the week leading up to the walk, when I will ask her to alert the security group to make sure they know we’ll be there and that we’ll be using tripods.

  • GREAT NEWS!

Manfrotto, a national sponsor of the Worldwide Photo Walk, has agreed to loan our group several tripods to make our night shoot a little easier!

These loaner tripods will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to photographers who do not otherwise have access to a tripod.

    Thanks Manfrotto! You guys rock!

  1. Jody Leonard says:

    Hi,
I was wondering what model tripods they will have to demo. I already own a Manfrotto but is is what I consider a $100 cheapie. I would like to try out one of their higher end models, preferably carbon fibre.
    Thanks,
    Jody Leonard

  2. I have on 3 separate occasions, been told by square security that I could not use my tripod in the Square…Just an FYI.
