Photo Walk Description

Hi Photo Walkers! Like last year, we are going to do a walk after dark, but we’ll start early enough to catch the sunset over the city, as well as the “magic light” after the sun goes down. We’ll walk the Esplanade, crossing the Morrison and Hawthorne bridges as we choose. I expect we’ll split off into smaller groups depending on interest, then join back later in the evening to view each other’s photos.

Make sure to bring tripods and flash units! We’re going to have the opportunity to make some interesting exposures during this walk, so bring along anything that you think may help with your creativity! Flashlights? Glowsticks? Laser Pointers? The possibilities are endless! Also, I may be able to arrange loaner tripods once again, but it will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Please let me know by email if you might need a loaner tripod.

For those who have not participated in one of these PhotoWalks in the past, this is not a classroom. We will offer no organized instruction, but your fellow walkers are likely willing to share tips, tricks and other information if asked. If you have a question, put it out there! Ultimately, we are joining together to just have fun with fellow photographers!

Once again, we will stay in groups. Shooting photos after dark can attract strange elements. The group leader, the PhotoWalk organization, or it’s sponsors assumes no liability for any injury or loss incurred by any participant on this walk. We will make every effort to ensure everyone is either paired up or in a smaller group. Feel free to bring friends along as well. By signing up as a participant, each person acknowledges and accepts this statement.

I don’t know exactly yet where we’ll meet after the walk, but I’ll do my best to arrange it as early as possible, then post and update!

For those who are interested, I am the Public Relations Manager for Columbia Helicopters. Photography and video makes up an extensive part of my workload, which is a big reason why I love my job. I have roughly 40 years of photography experience, and I am always willing to share what I have learned. Equally, I always feel I can learn something from nearly every photographer I meet, which is why events like this PhotoWalk are so much fun!

Feel free to send me questions about the PhotoWalk, my location choice, my background or just about anything else that may come to mind. I look forward to meeting all of you!

    Leader News & Updates

To begin, I want to thank each of our participants once again for coming out on a rainy Saturday night. I recognize the conditions were far from ideal, but I feel that the evening was a reasonable representation of photography in Portland. When you live where it rains, you take photos in the rain.

Due to the small turnout, we had just six entries into the contest for one of Scott Kelby’s books and the chance to advance into the national competition. From images that could easily hang on the walls of Portland’s visitor center to a gritty photo showing an all too real side of the city, each of the six images offered elements that I believe would make them competitive in the international contest.

Ultimately, the decision for the final was too tough to make on my own, so I turned to three others with experienced eyes and strong backgrounds in photography. Again, each of the people remarked about the strong elements in each image. I honestly did not receive a negative comment about any of the six photos.

After several emails and discussions, I have selected Michael Whitson’s image depicting the bridge to the dock at the Portland Fire Bureau’s Station 21. Each of the people who assisted me remarked on the color and discussed how the lines in the photo draw the viewer deeper into it. I offer my congratulations to Michael for a making a beautiful image.

  • Updates For Portland East Bank Esplanade Photo Walk

    Hi Walkers!

We are getting closer to the date of our Photo Walk, and I have a couple of announcements.

There is currently a waiting list for our Walk. If your plans have changed and you are no longer able to participate in our Walk, PLEASE take a moment to release your spot so that someone else can participate. Simply not showing up will not allow another photographer to take your place.

For those on the waiting list, please note that there are two additional Walks in the Portland area. Unless you are really holding out hope for our night walk, you might consider joining one of the others.

I believe all of the loaner tripods from the AWESOME people at Manfrotto have been spoken for. If you absolutely need one, perhaps you can trade off with another photographer you meet on the walk.

Finally, I regret to announce that I have been unable to find a suitable location for our post-walk social gathering. The few places that had the room and were willing to accomodate our group all wanted substantial deposits for food and/or beverages, and I am not in a financial position where I am able to make those guarantees. I have already suggested that we form mini-groups to ensure photographer safety as we walk, so perhaps those mini-groups can come up with locations to meet after taking photos.

As always, I welcome all questions or comments.

See you in a few weeks!

    Dan

  • HELP!!! We need a site for our post-Walk get together!!

    Hi everyone!

I have been trying to locate a space for our post-Walk get-together, and I haven’t had much luck. I was hoping that someone in our group might have an idea. I have already tried the following:

Hair of the Dog brew pub: closes at 8 pm
Bunk Sandwiches/Bunk Bar: can’t support the group
    ClarkLewis: Closes at 10 pm
Lucky Lab Brewpub: Would have to charge $150 for the group (Sorry, I can’t afford it!)

Any suggestions are happily welcomed. Please contact me by email (dansweet@yahoo.com) or cell phone (503-970-4449).

    Thanks!

    Dan

  • Awesome News! Tripods Available For Loan!

Once again this year, the wonderful people at Manfrotto/Gitzo are national sponsors of Scott Kelby’s World Wide Photo Walk. And once again, because we are participating in a walk after dark, they have generously agreed to loan me several brand new tripods!

These will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Please use the link to send me an email if you would like to borrow one of these tripods. I also have a few spare older (heavier) tripods that I can make available as needed.

Again, my deepest appreciation to Manfrotto/Gitzo. They are among the coolest people in the world, and I think they make the best tripods as well!

  1. bill zingraf says:

Looking forward to joining you again this year Dan.

  2. Rachel Noah says:

Dan, I’d like to reserve a tripod. I don’t have one that will support the weight of my camera + lens (due for an upgrade!). I will need to either borrow or rent from ProPhotoSupply. Please let me know if one is available.

    Looking forward to it!

    • Dan Sweet says:

      Hi Rachel,

You’re first on the list! I’ll make arrangements to meet a little earlier with those of you who need tripods.

      See you in October!

      Dan

  3. David DeHart says:

Hi Dan: I look forward to October 1 (or) 2. This will be my third Photowalk. Last year I won the best photo in my group (Vancouver). This will be my first late evening walk.

    • Dan Sweet says:

      Hi David,

I think that sunset and after dark shooting offers so many opportunities for interesting images. Being along both sides of the river, with the city on one side and the freeway on the other, should give us some great shots!

  4. Jody Leonard says:

Looking forward to the walk! See you all there.
Suggestion for afterwards….Hair Of The Dog on the eastside.

    • Dan Sweet says:

      Hi Jody,

Thanks for the suggestion! That’s actually the place I want to use after the walk, but I need to go there to clear it with them first. If they aren’t available, I doubt we’ll have too much trouble finding a site that can accomodate us.

      See you in October!

      Dan

  5. ted ducker says:

Thanks for making this happen, Dan. I’d like to get on the tripod list. Mine isn’t holding up too well (literally).

This will be my first Worldwide Photowalk. Looking forward to it.

    Ted

  6. Luis Adrian Pena says:

    Hello Dan:

I recently moved from San Diego, where I participated in the last two PhotoWalks. I look forward to my first one in Portland.

I’d also like to get on the tripod loaner list, if possible.

    Thanks,
    Adrian.

  7. Pamela Long says:

I’d love to join your walk again this year, but am participating in the “Light the Night” walk for the Lymphoma/Leukemia Society at the same time. You will probably be seeing the walkers in the place where you’re meeting. Will there be other times and places for photowalks in Portland on this weekend? This looks like the only one.

    • Dan Sweet says:

Pam, that is an incredibly worthy reason to miss the PhotoWalk. Because of the way the system is set up, there generally isn’t another walk posted until the first one is filled up. I’ve tried to let the organizers knoiw that I would have no objection to other walks being opened before this one, simply because I know that not everyone can attend a walk a night. Equally, I believe our area has a number of other oustanding areas where one could host a walk; I just happened to choose this site for my night walk.

Have you considered volunteering as a leader and organizing a walk at a time that better fits your schedule this year?

  8. Todd Evans says:

How about Green Dragon or Cascade station? Cascade station may not be the best choice since it mainly has sour beers. Green Dragon has ok food and service and a large selection of beers. Both are not that far from the walk.
Also Produce Row, I haven’t been there yet but heard it is nice.

    • Dan Sweet says:

Thanks Todd. I’ll contact them. I’ve also tried Hopworks Urban Brewery, and I have a call into Grand Central Bowling. Other suggestions are still encouraged!

  9. Tawni Henlin says:

This will be a first for me. I would like to get on the tripod list if there are still any available. Also, as a true amateur with an older Rebel XTi, I have no “lighting” equipment other than my on-camera flash. Any suggestions for where I might “borrow” what I may need? I live in Salem. Also, where would you suggest parking (not real familiar with that part of Portland). Thank you!

    • Todd Evans says:

Tawni, for the lighting you can look locally at Pro photo supply.

      http://www.prophotosupply.com/p-rental.htm

or by web you have Borrow lens

      http://www.borrowlenses.com

I don’t have experience with either one.

      • Dan Sweet says:

I have first hand experience with rentals at Pro Photo Supply. Those guys rock! My only recommendation is that you reserve the equipment you need well in advance so that it is available when you need it.

    • Dan Sweet says:

Tawni, If you make it from the stand-by to the active list, you are welcome to use one of our loaner tripods. And don’t worry too much about lighting equipment. I expect a lot of the images captured on this walk will be the result of long exposures with no flash whatsoever. That said, you can use other light sources – even a flashlight will work! Be creative! And who knows, maybe one of the other walkers will let you borrow a flash attachment if you encounter a situation where you need one.

  10. Cora Coronel says:

Hi Dan!! I could have one of the manfrotto tripods?? You let me know if I can…Thanks, see you!

  11. Luis Adrian Pena says:

I regret to tell you that I will not be able to attend this Saturday’s photowalk. Sorry for the late notice, but I was hoping that I could change my schedule and participate, but it will be impossible. I am removing myself from the attendee list, hope someone can take my spot (and my tripod reservation).

  12. Toni Noll says:

Hi Dan ~ I regret that I will not be able to participate due to scheduling conflict and another engagement. Sorry for the last minute notice; hope you can fill my space. Maybe next year. Have fun! Tonia

  13. Cora Coronel says:

Dan: I’m srry but I can’t be there today. I’m just noticed. Thanks and heve fun!

  14. Victor Sutan says:

    Hi, Dan,

Sorry to cancel last minute, but my cold is really taking a toll on me.

    Thanks,

    Victor
