Photo Walk Description

This walk will be an early morning trek through Philadelphia’s famous Italian Market and the surrounding neighborhood.

We will capture the early morning activity at the market stalls, through most shops’ openings at 8 AM and beyond. We can also take a look at the two parish churches, Mario Lanza’s house, and the backstreets.

This vibrant eight block stretch along 9th Street in South Philadelphia has housed culinary merchants for nearly a century, with old Italian mainstays like Sarcone’s Bakery, DiBruno Brothers, Cappuccio’s Meats, Anastasio Produce, and Fante’s joined by a host of offerings from the newer immigrants from Central America and Vietnam. Funky shops punctuate the stalls, and there are always lots of South Philly characters to photograph.

A chimping and primping session will follow at the Wishing Well, owned by two South Philly natives. There will be breakfast and libations available; you can check out their menu online.

Great choice… this sound great! This will be my first walk:)

  2. Bill Jordan says:

    Thanks, Ann.

Anyone who’s walked with me before knows that I don’t shy away from oft-photographed places. I love seeing what unique shots talented photographers can find, even in spots that have come under the gaze of thousands of lenses.

For instance, Last year, a marvelous picture of fireman’s boots from the Manyunk walk won a worldwide honorable mention.

Look forward to seeing you there!

This makes 3 years in a row. See you there.

I can’t wait! As a life long Philadelphian. I love my city and the magic that is the italian Market. Anyone coming into the city is in for a special treat.

  5. Ted Waters says:

Awesome. Round 2 and this time no 115 degree weather. Can I get a high five.

  6. Bill Jordan says:

    Teddy:

    A very high five!

Great to see you and several others returning for another walk. I really enjoyed everyone’s pics from the last two years.

  7. Andy Scheck says:

Last year’s walk the heat was pretty rough (even at the beach as I did the one in Coney Island). Since I am not from Philly for me it is someplace different (even if you say it is an oft-photographed location).

Oh yes, a thank you in advance to Bill for taking his time to organize and lead this walk.

  8. ross says:

This will be my second walk. Yes I’m glad its in October!

I vote Sabrina’s for breakfast after the walk!!!

  9. Bill Jordan says:

    Dante:

I see your wife (sister? daughter?) has caught the photo disease. Looking forward to meeting her.

  10. Bill Jordan says:

    Ross:

Sabrina’s is on the list of people I am going to see, but brunch is a big deal there, so I don’t know whether they will go for hosting us. The Kelby rules do not allow for anything with a mandatory charge, so I cannot guarantee any restaurant a certain number of eaters, and we would be there longer than they normally want tables occupied. Then again, it is a community event, and last year’s venue did clear about $700 in two hours in a normally empty third floor bar.

There are several other places that can provide a nice venue for the after-session.

Kildare’s last year was ideal – private room, projector and screen, bartender, no strings attached.

  11. Dante fratto says:

    Hi Bill,
Yes, it’s my wife. She has a very good eye for photography. I can’t wait for this walk. I been wanting to do the Italian Market for awhile now.

  12. Alisha says:

I am super excited to join in the photo walk. This will be my very first walk. I am not really sure what to expect, but it really sounds great! Can’t wait!

  13. Howard Pitkow says:

Hoping 5 people decide not to come. I’m on the waiting list. Either way I’ll be there but it would be more fun to be registered! I look forward to meeting the rest of you folks who “got in”.

  14. Selya Rollins says:

Hello Everyone, looking forward to seeing everyone and those great shots…
so appreciate the new time of year for the PhotoWalk!

Please post as many pictures as you want. I will be choosing Best Animal, Best Vegetable, and Best Mineral pictures from the flickr group.

  16. Bill Jordan says:

Congratulations to Teddy on the winning photo. The judge loved everything about it – the perfect exposure, the odd angle, the butcher’s face. This image screams Italian Market in all its offbeat humanity. And porcinity.
