Photo Walk Description

We will meet at Franklin Square near the main fountain. Franklin Square is a fun place to take photos.

Then we will walk toward the Ben Franklin Bridge, and proceed about half way across the bridge. From the Bridge, the view and skyline of Center City Philadelphia is amazing. The walkway is very wide (the Bridge Police often have a police car on the walkway, the walkway is that wide) and the walkway railing are high enough to feel very safe.

After walking along the bridge, about halfway, we will turn back and walk back to a meeting place near 10th and Market Street. (Still to be determined)

What can you expect to photograph. On my previous walks across the bridge I have photographed, people (joggers, bicyclists and pedestrians), the bridge structure, the cars on the bridge, Duck Boats, Tug Boats, Sail Boats, the Battleship New Jersey, the Delaware River, the skyline of Center City Philadelphia, the skyline of Camden New Jersey and many interesting textures of the bridge structure.

In addition to the bridge, Franklin Square and the streets we will travel will have many varied and interesting subjects for you to photograph.

And because we will be walking up and back on the bridge (about half way), you can make the walk longer or shorter depending on how far across the bridge you want to go.

FYI — the map is a little funny, and has added some extra steps.

  • Saturday I almost here! Here is some helpful tips and comments.

Saturday is almost here, and I am very excited for our Photo Walk.
Here is some helpful tips, comments and general information.

Q: What time does the walk start?
A: We will start at 3:30 pm on Saturday, October 1, 2011.

    Q: Where are we meeting?
A: We will meet at the fountain in Franklin Square?

    Q: Where is Franklin Square?
A: Franklin Square is between 6th and 8th Streets and Arch Street.

Q: Where is the end point?
A: We will end at Q BBQ
(207 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106)
We will be meeting at this restaurant at 5:30 pm

Q: What if I need to cancel?
A: We will miss you, but please be kind and either cancel using the
worldwidephotowalk.com web site, or send me a message.
At the time I am sending out this email, there is still room for
additional walkers, it still may fill up. So lets make sure there
is room for everyone who is going to participate.

    Q: Where can I park?
A: You may be lucky and find street parking.
I did find a parking garage at 7th and Market Streets
which is only $5 for the day. And is halfway between the start and end points.
(Starting at Chestnut Street, drive down 7th street until the second parking garage)

    Q: What should I bring?
A: Camera (that should be obvious)
    Water and/or snacks
And what ever else you are willing to carry for the 2 hour walk

Q: Is there a map of the route?
A: Yes, I posted the route at http://www.istrut.net/photowalk.html
I will have copies for everyone at the start point

Q: Where can we share the great photos taken during this walk.
    A: I created a Flickr Group:
    http://www.flickr.com/groups/philaphotowalk2011/
Post your best 5 photos here to share with the group

Q: What about the photo contest?
A: Go back to the worldwidephotowalk.com site and log in to post your one best photo
The local winner will win a copy of Scott Kelby’s book Light It, Shoot It, Retouch It

    Q: Any other reminders?
A: Safety first. What for cars and other pedestrians.
    Be aware of your surroundings.

Consider walking in small groups and not solo.
This is as much as social event as it is a photography event.
So meet other and learn from each other.

Q: Do you still have questions you want answered?
A: Go to the worldwidephotowalk.com web site and use the Contact Leader button.
    I will reply.

I am looking forward to meeting all of you Saturday!
    Stephen

  • Map and Directions for the Walk

I have posted the Map and Directions we will be walking.

This map can be found at http://www.istrut.net/photowalk.html

Any questions, use the Contact Leader button to send them to me. I will answer promptly.

  • Change of End Point Restaurant

The restaurant I was planning on using for our End Point turned out to be unavailable. So I found a new restaurant at 2nd and Chestnut Street. The distance between the start and end points remain the same.
The restaurant is Q BBQ, 207 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

I also found two PARKING LOTS which are halfway between the start and end points. There are two parking lots on 7th street between Chestnut and Market Streets. The parking lot closest to Chestnut is $10 for the day on Saturday, and the parking lot closest to Market Street is $5 for the day on Saturday. My suggestion is to pass the first parking lot and use the one closest to Market Street. Both are self-park lots (not valeted parking lots.)

A suggestion, you might want to consider using Public Transportation and not drive into the city. From New Jersey, take the PATCO train to 8th and Market. For SEPTA, there are many alternatives which will bring you to the same area.

One final update, I have contacted the DRPA and have approval for our Photo Walk on the Ben Franklin Bridge, so we should not have any problems on the Bridge.

    See you Saturday!
