Photo Walk Description

I am a retired Baltimore Police Officer and Detective, I was injured in the line of duty to a point where I will never walk again. Therefore when picking a place to do this Photowalk I looked for a place that would not only be good for those that can walk and shoot, but also a place for those of us that cannot walk but love to shoot. So I thought of all the places my wife and I have shot over this past year and of all of them Loch raven Dam was the best. it has tons of trails for walking, and road for wheelchairs or vehicles that you can drive and shoot, then park and get out to shot some more. We have ties to several local photo clubs and professional photographers; so sign up fast as this may fill fast, and should be a good walk along to meet people with your interests. After the walk/ride we will meet at the Bel Loc Diner on the corner of Loch Raven and Joppa for quick eats and to share a look at our captures. I will make sure we have our page set up early so we can enter the Photowalk Flickr portion of the walk, as well we will have a best photo in our walk contests where we will also try to award prizes to our members. I hope to see you soon, this has been a fun walk for us in the past and we hope this second walk will be equally fun. See you on the 1st of October
Ken

Note there are tons of trails, paths, and roads to shoot while in the park, so there will be something for everyone, most people that have been there have found hundreds of postcard quality backdrops to shoot.

  • Tomorrow's Walk

When I set the Walk Page up it stopped me from adding a full address, and I was did a quick search on Google and ended up with a bad address for the Dam, so between me and the Kelby site, more me I should have tried to fix it, but figured I would wait until the night before to send this email out, so late entries would still get the message. To get to the dam, we normally take exit 29 and pass Loch raven high school, therefore it might be easier for everyone to meet on the high school lot no later than say 12:15… and we can all go to the damn from there. If you know where the damn is, feel free to head there whenever you want, if you are late, just head down Cromwell Bridge Road, which is exit 29 off the Baltimore Beltway. A short section of the route between Providence Road. Once we get to the park, we can shoot from any of the many trails, or from the street, basically where ever you want, I want the walk to be fun for everyone, and not regimented to where we have to stick to a certain path. Being in a wheelchair I typically shoot from my truck (so if you miss me at the high school, look for me in my truck, A Silver/Grey Hummer H3) Those that know the area will know the types of shots we could expect would range from trees, waterbeds, birds, flowers, paths, it really should provide us with plenty of opportunity.

Also after the shoot we can meet at the bel Loch dinner, or go our separate way whatever is best for you, in either case, once you go through your shots, feel free to up load your top pick(s) to our flicker Walk Group at http://www.flickr.com/groups/1742423@N25/ there should be a forum for us to talk/write and maybe pick next year’s walk location in advance… also discuss each others photos.

The main thing tomorrowrrow aside from having fun, and getting your best shot possible, is to be safe, watch your footing, I am told in the past somewhere busy looking through their lens and not where they walk, I am asking that we all use better sense than that while getting our shots, so we can have more fun with out incident.

Last thing before I sign off, we should plan on going in as many different directions as we can so as to get the best mix of captures that we can, but still we need to get together for a group shot, or several group shots

Take care I look forward to meeting you and having a great day

    ken

The address I was given for Loch Raven high School is Cromwell Bridge Rd and Cowpens Avenue
another address given was 1212 Cowpens Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21286 — 410-887-3525

    Ken,

The time listed above is 12:00 pm to 3:00 am? Do you mean Noon to 3:00 pm?

Look forward to meeting you and thanks for leading the walk.

LOL I’ll fix it… or we could have somone wanting to stay late… although that could be cool to, except for Park Rule

  2. Dorothy says:

I’m interested. I have never been on a photo walk. Can my husband come, if he doesn’t shoot? Well, he sometimes uses his cell phone.

    • Ken Driscoll says:

Dorothy, Sure he can come with you, or you can sign him up and have him shoot with any camera, cell phone, disposible camera, DSLR, it doesn’t matter. It’s all about having fun, and in most cases it is more fun with family, so either as a guest of yours or signed up and another shooter. This is for all levels of photographers, from beginning, to professional, or in your husband’s case pre-beginner… LOL he just doesn’t know he’s beginning until you tell him. Seriously though this Walk is meant for any and all levels, if there is the smallest interest in shooting pics sign’em up and bring’em.

      Can’t wait to meet you(s)

  3. Fred says:

You also Forgot to put 9800 Loch Raven Drive. You just have 9800 Raven Drive unless you are telling everyone where you live.

    • Ken Driscoll says:

Thanks Fred, I figured we would send an email to everyone when we get closer to the walk so we would all be told at once, the site filled in the info for me, or I should said completed it for me and won’t let me change it. But when we get closer we will either meet at the addrees provided for the dam, or just someplace close with a better street address. I know there is a school close by and that parking lot might be better. We will straighten it out when we get closer to the walk date, the good thing is, the location of the ealk is the Dam and is beautiful this time of year, so it will be a great time, with tons of photo opts. I am looking forward to it.

thanks again for the heads up – it will be addressed

  4. Fred says:

You could also use the diner address at the corner of Lock Raven Drive and Cromwell Bridge Rd. or GPS Coordinates for the parking lot at the dam itself. Just ideas…

    • Ken Driscoll says:

Thanks Fred, it will be a good time. I’m not sure if you have ever been to the park or not but it is great, so much to shoot, I will get there early just to see what looks good, My wife and I have gone there twice and have a ton of fun, I have never not gotten a good shot while there.

Thanks for signing up, see ya then

      Ken

  5. Fred Gomeringer jr says:

Yes I have been there just not quite sure where we are meeting withing the reservoir area. I was just thinking about it and they close Loch Raven Drive Between Providence and Morgan Mill Rd. for Bicyclist and walkers. So if one were to show up on the wrong side they would have to drive all the way around the reservoir.

  6. Bill Diegel says:

    Ken,

Thanks so much for being the leader today. I’m sorry that I didn’t make lunch at Bel Loc. I realized that I had lost my lens shade for my 80-200mm, so I spent that time looking for it. And…I found it!!!

    • Ken Driscoll says:

Glad to hear you found it, I wish you’d have told us, we would have helped look for it. In any event, I am glad you could make it, we had a great time, got a lot of great shots, and met a lot of new friends, I look forward to seeing what we upload. Also if i can arraign another walk even before next year I may send messages out to the group via Flickr, so again Thanks for joining us we had a great time despite my couple hiccups to start us off, but once we got going things went smooth

      Thanks again

      Ken

  7. Ken Driscoll says:

Ok I don’t want to bother everyone with tons of messages but, I have two important things to let everyone know regarding the walk. 1st, i want you all to know where to enter your offical contest photo, and then i want to tell you about a second group photo contest.

1st we are doing everything according to the rules, we built our own Flickr group page, and uploaded our best pics… now we can use the feedback we are getting from those uploads to move on to entering Scott’s official 4th annual Flickr walk group at the following link http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwpw4/ join that group and move just one of your pics there for the main Kelby contest. This is important, the entry has to be made by the 7th, so if I were you I would do it by the 6th because the time isn’t clear so do it a day early. Also you can only upload one pic to Scotts portion of the contest… take a look at the feedback you are getting for your pics to help you decide whihc you might advance to the next stage of this contest. Good luck, I hope someone from our group wins, I saw a lot of great pics.

I hope to see everyone again next year.

2nd A group contest… I’m not sure if you know it or not, but the group leader gets a free Scott Kelby Book. I don’t do the group leads for the book, this was my second walk, and last year before the walk I decided I would pass my book on to our group’s best picture as decided by members of the walk. That said, I would like our members to go through the pics in our group and make comments telling me who you like best.

On the day Kelby picks his winner, (I think the 12th) I’ll go through and read the comments to see which pic our group thought should win the book, and when I get the book from Kelby, I will pass it on to whom ever took our groups winning pic.

Thanks Again, and Again I hope to see you all again next year

    Ken

PS I know I have provided this info before, but again for anyone that wants to keep in touch, here’s my email TheDriscolls@live.com Patty and I along with my brother and his wife will be trying to do another group walk, I want to save it for next year, but if it has to be done sooner, I would like to be able to pass the info on and if you want to be included just send me a message and I’ll let you know, but we are trying to get into Rosewood Hospital for an Urban Explorer type photo shoot. Thanks again and take care
