Photo Walk Description

This year, we’re continuing on our theme of historic Southern California. We’ll be gathering at the beautiful Crystal Cove Historic District Beach Cottages. A perfect location for architectural photography, portraiture, HDR… Something for everyone!

About the Crystal Cove Historic District Beach Cottages:
Take a step back in time with a visit to the newly restored Crystal Cove Beach Cottages in the Crystal Cove State Park Historic District.

Located in the heart of Crystal Cove State Park’s 3.5 miles of pristine coastline, the Historic District first developed as a South Seas movie set due to its seclusion and tropical aura. The community thrived and became beloved for its relaxed, friendly atmosphere and picturesque landscape; and in 1979, the Crystal Cove State Park Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Built as a seaside colony in the 1930’s & ‘40’s, Crystal Cove endures as a magical escape for visitors who appreciate the opportunity to experience California’s natural and architectural beauty, untouched by time. Thanks to the efforts of the Crystal Cove Alliance, all of the original cottages are still standing today – spared from the hands of developers. Twenty-one cottages have already been authentically restored to reflect the era between 1935 and 1955, when the Cove evolved as a community.

Experience the magic of Crystal Cove as it existed in the 1930s to ‘50s. Located directly on the beach or overlooking the seaside from a bluff top, each cottage has been painstakingly restored and furnished to recreate Crystal Cove’s unique vintage beach culture and rustic ambience.

Driving Directions:
Crystal Cove Beach Cottages in the Crystal Cove State Park Historic District is located on the ocean-side of Pacific Coast Highway in Newport Beach, CA.

When driving southbound on Pacific Coast Highway from Newport Beach and points north, the entrance to the Historic District of Crystal Cove State Park is located at the Crystal Cove/Los Trancos major intersection, the first traffic light south of Newport Coast Drive. Turn right toward the ocean at Crystal Cove to enter the park.

For more details on location, see: http://www.crystalcovebeachcottages.com/html/guest_information.php#map

After the Walk:
We’ll gather at the Beachcomber Cafe (http://www.thebeachcombercafe.com; 15 Crystal Cove, Newport Coast, CA 92657) to shoot more breeze, share stories and images and yak about our experience. If you want to eat (which is half the fun) it looks like the typical lunch entree is $15-$20.

  • Post Walk Update - Uploading Images to Flickr and Our Walk Page

    Hi Folks,

Thanks again for making this year’s Kelby Worldwide Photowalk a resounding success! I had a bunch of folks thank me for doing all the work to set it up. It’s actually quite simple, but frankly, it’s really all of us who attended that made it the cool event that it was. I hope you enjoyed yourself, and made a few new friends this morning. That’s what it’s all about.

As mentioned, I’ve set up a Flickr group for you to post any / all of the images you want to share. This is NOT an OFFICIAL site, but the Flicr site gives you an opportunity to share more images with your fellow walkersbut since you’ll only be able to post your SINGLE BEST image on the official photowalk page for consideration / judging. Show us what you got! The UNOFFICIAL Crystal Cove Beach Cottages Photowalk group site URL is: http://www.flickr.com/groups/wwphotowalk2011crystalcove

If I understand correctly, you have to upload images to your own Flickr account first, and then you can add them to the group.

The folks at the Crystal Cove Alliance may be interested in using some of our images for their publications. It’s not clear whether they will actually contact any of us directly, or simple take images from the Flickr site. So, for that reason, be sure to WATERMARK your web images with your name and contact information at a minimum.

You’ll be able to upload your single best image to our official photowalk page (http://worldwidephotowalk.com/walk/newport-beach-ca-united-states-crystal-cove-historicbeach-cottages ) after 9AM EDT / 6AM PDT Monday, 10/3/11. You have until 9AM PDT / 12 noon EDT Friday 10/7/11 to get them up there if you want them to be considered for judging / submisson to the larger WW Photowalk competition. I then have the unenviable job of having to select just one to forward up the with worldwide competition. I love seeing what you all did. I hate have to choose just one favorite image!

I’ve been askied if post-processing / Photoshop is allowed. ABSOLUTELY! Make the image look like you want it, however you get it there.

    More to follow…

  • Our Walk is Tomorrow!!!

Hi Folks. Just a few last minute reminders / updates for tomorrow’s Historic Cottages Photowalk:

    1. Important Dates:
    • Saturday October 1: PHOTO WALK!
    • Monday, October 3: Walkers can start uploading image(s) to walk page for competition (by 9 AM EDT)
    • Friday, October 7: Deadline for submitting contest photos (12 PM (noon) EDT)
    • Monday, October 10: Deadline for local winner selections (12 PM (noon) EDT)
    • Monday, October 17: Grand Prize, Honorable Mentions, and People’s Choice winners announced

    2. Allow time to park and get to the Los Tracos Parking Lot Kiosk by 8:45 AM (about 1/4 mile south of Newport Coast Drive). I’ve posted maps of the area here:
    http://www.pbase.com/haverstick/image/138472345
    http://www.pbase.com/haverstick/image/138472500

I’ll be doing a BRIEF welcome / overview / plan starting promptly at 8:45. We’ll head through the tunnel under PCH as a group by 9:00 AM.

    3. Remember: There is a $15/vehicle park day-use fee.

3A. Remember: 73 Freeway at Bonita to get to PCH is a $2.25 toll road charge (cash only / correct amount only) to use that ramp. There are alternate ways to get there…FYI

    4. Checklist: Things to prepare tonight (if you’ve not already done so):
    • Charge all batteries (and take them out of the charger and put back in device)
    • Backup / clear off camera memory cards and make sure there’s one in your camera
    • Clean lens(es)
    • Set out water bottle(s) / hat / sunscreen
    * Prepare for a great time!

    5. I’ll be sending out details AFTER the walk with instructions for uploading / sharing images via a Flickr group. The Flickr group will be for SHARING only…NOT for official Kelby Photo Walk submission. NOTE that your final best shot that you want to submit for actual photo walk competition (for judging / prize consideration) will need to be uploaded through the actual Kelby World Wide Photo Walk site. (We don’t have the details on that from the NAPP group yet, but I’ll post it as soon as I do).

My weather app shows a projected high of 71 tomorrow, with partly cloudy skies. Sounds perfect for photography, but might be a little chilly. Bring a jacket or sweater?

See you all tomorrow at 8:45 sharp!

PS: If you need to reach me by phone for any reason after we’ve started, I’m at (714) 679-4863.

  • Directions Update - Important

Per Joe, one of our walkers:

“…To get to PCH, I strongly recommend driving down Newport Coast Dr. It may mean a slightly longer route, depending on where you’re coming from, but it’s a prettier drive with *much* less traffic than coming down McArthur and taking PCH through Corona Del Mar….”

  • Photowalk 2011 - T minus 3 days! (Tips and IMPORTANT reminders)

    Hi Folks,

Well, it’s nearly upon us! Just a couple more days ’til WW Photowalk 2011!

A few reminders and tips as you prepare for this Saturday’s event:

Per Lynn, the Crystal Cove special events / film permits coordinator, we DO NOT need a permit since we are a non-commercial group of amateur photographers / hobbyists. She has us on the calendar and will make sure the rangers know we do not need a permit. She also asked me to please remind everyone of the following:

    1. There is a $15/vehicle park day-use fee. Carpooling is encouraged. Kinda tough to coordinate since we’re all coming from different places, but if you have a friend signed up as well, maybe you can meet somewhere and drive together.

    2. Parking is at the entry kiosk at the Los Tracos lot. Use the tunnel under PCH to access the beach. (We’ll meet at the kiosk and move as a group from parking to the start of the walk).

    3. We may photograph the cottages from the beach or lane, but may not breach the boundary of the cottages out of respect for renters who are enjoying their well-deserved (and expensive) getaway in the historic district.

    4. Tidepools are a great opportunity for photographs, but I believe we’ll be at high tide at the time of our walk (Thanks, Bob, for checking).

    5. Wear shoes suitable for walking on sand, rock, etc. Flip-flops are NOT a good plan…

    RE: Waitlisted Walkers
Several of our registered walkers have emailed me this week indicating that they’re unable to join us. If you have emailed me specifically, I have removed you from the walk to make room for folks on the waiting list. I believe waitlisted folks automatically get an email notification when they’ve been moved to the registered walker list. If you know you’re not going to be able to join us and you can’t remove yourself, please email me right away and I’ll remove you to make room. Thanks!

    RE: Directions and Costs
REMINDER: as noted above – there IS a park $15 entry fee per vehicle.

Also, one of our walkers who went down this week to scout out the site got off the 73 Freeway at Bonita to get to PCH.  There is a $2.25 toll road charge (cash only / correct amount only) to use that ramp.   There is apparently no charge to get off at Bison or MacArthur to get to PCH.

    Photowalk Tips for the Day:
Tip #1: According to my iPhone, the forecast for Newport Beach projects temperature of 71 degrees (68 w/wind chill) on Saturday. It should be quite comfortable temp-wise, but you’ll want to be sure to wear a hat, bring sunscreen, and plenty of water to keep hydrated. You may also want to bring a large ziplock bag or plastic grocery bag that your camera will fit in in case it’s drizzly in the morning.

Tip #2: As above – Shoes – wear ‘em. Actually, more importantly, you probably want to wear comfortable walking shoes. Flip flops / sandals not recommend.

Tip #3: Always carry a litterbag in your car.

Check back tomorrow for more tips for a successful photo walk experience.

    See ya Saturday!

    Jon

  • Crystal Cove Historic Beach Cottages Photowalk - T-minus 5 days!

Greetings fellow Mission SJC photo walkers!

I hope you’re as excited about next weekend’s photo walk as I am! I’ve really been looking forward to meeting you all, and am anticipating a great time of photos and fellowship!

I’ll try to post a couple photo walk tips between now and Saturday, starting with the following:

Tip #1: Charge your camera batteries…now.

Bonus tip: create a checklist for things you want to remember for Saturday – including the above tip, and its corollary: Make sure to remove battery from charger and insert in camera BEFORE leaving the house. Tape the checklist to your camera bag, or to the door through which you’ll be leaving on Saturday morning.

Tip #2: Make sure you’ve backed up any images on your camera memory cards, and reformatted them to clear them off before Saturday morning. It would be a shame to get there with a full (or nearly full) memory card, and either not be able to shoot, or have to delete images that you’d not backed up to make room for photo walk photos…

It’s gonna be a great day!

    Best,

    Jon

  • Alternate Walk if You're on the Waiting List

    Hi Folks,

As you’ve figured out, our walk is full. If you’re on the waiting list, there is another wonderful walk in San Juan Capistrano’s historic Los Rios district, Saturday, 10A to 12P, hosted by Jeffrey Aron. You can contact Jeffery, or register for the Los Rios walk through his WW Photowalk page at: http://worldwidephotowalk.com/walk/san-juan-capistrano-ca-united-states-los-rios-district

Looking forward to meeting you all soon!

Watch this space for some important Photowalk tips this week…

    Best,

    Jon

  • Important Update on Crystal Cove Historic District Walk Details

    Monday, 8/8/11

    Hi Fellow Photowalkers!

As you can see from the counter on this page, our walk is filling up fast! Gonna be a great event!

I spoke with Lynn the Crystal Cove special events / film permits coordinator, this morning, and confirmed that we DO NOT need a permit since we are a non-commercial group of amateur photographers / hobbyists. She has us on the calendar and will make sure the rangers know we do not need a permit. She also asked me to please let everyone know the following:

(We’ll move as a group from parking to the start of the walk).

Also, if your plans change and you’re not able to join us after all, please remove yourself from the walk by clicking the “Leave Walk” button on our walk page to make your space available to someone else. Unfortunately, as the walk leader, I can’t do that for you.

Anyway, I’ll post more details, tips, suggestions as we get closer to the date. Looking forward to meeting you all!

    Best,

    Jon

    Hi Jon,
Just a crosscheck on my subscription to your walk. I did not receive an e-mail confirmation. Should I be concerned?

Looking forward to the walk and talk.

    Now logged in as Steve.

    Question remains the same.

  4. Kathryn Kama says:

    Hi Jon:
I am on a 7 week van tour of the USA. Plans to be home by 26 August–hopefully. So I have not signed up for your Wed. night PS class yet—hope there will be a place for me in Sept.
See you then with many photos across America.
    Kathy Kama

    • Wow, Kathy! I’m jealous! Look forward to seeing your collection of images when you return. Can’t promise anything on the Photoshop class – last I checked before the end of the summer session, it was nearly full. But, you know how it works. I’d stop by as soon as possible upon your return and try to register. We drop no shows on the first night, so you never know if a space will open up.

      Have a fantastic trip!

      Jon

  5. Thank you for your inquiry and interest in Crystal Cove State Park as a possible location for your business opportunity.

California State Parks require permits for all film or photo activity on state property. You may apply online through the California Film Commission at http://www.film.ca.gov after a check with the park’s calendar.

    Call 949-376-1959 for more information.

  6. Steve Raub says:

    Jon,

Do we do this as individuals, or as a group?

    Thanks,
    Steve

  7. Mike Wilson says:

From the pop-ups that I saw as I joined the group, I may have joined twice. If so, drop one. am looking forward to the walk!

  8. Dear Jon,

I am interested in your walks, classes, etc. Please include me when E-mailing about your photo activities.

    Thank you,
One Chick Who Clicks aka Annette

  9. Hi Annette,

Thanks for you interest! Since the Kelby Photowalk registration does not provide me with any email contact info for our walkers, if you’d like to get on my mailing list for classes, photo-related activities, etc., the best way is to sign-up to receive email notices on my website at http://jonhaverstickstudio.com, or follow me on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/jonhaverstickstudio

    Thanks again!

    Jon
